Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work! is (despite the number) the fourth game in Al Lowe's Leisure Suit Larry series. The middle-aged would-be-womanizer Larry Laffer fell off a boat during a cruise and sustained amnesia, forgetting how he and his sweetheart Patti got separated, how Larry got a job in LA, how Patti got a job with the FBI, and what happened in (the never released) Larry 4. Now Larry and Patti are working independently on two cases that are connected to each other, even though the heroes aren't aware of that. Larry's new bosses are involved in shady … More

Frump's review of Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Patti Does a Little Undercover Work

I don't have a lot good to say about Leisure Suit Larry 5 though. That game seems like an experiment that backfired. It doesn't really seem to know what it wants to be. The puzzles are barely there and the ones that are there don't really need to be solved correctly, you can just kinda go past them. You're supposed to film these interviews with some women but if you forget to degausse the tapes at the beginning of the game, it won't let you use the tapes in the recorder but the game continues anyway. It's a strange choice. I don't want walking dead states, those aren't fun at all, but why include the puzzles if they don't matter? I guess Sierra games have that score to shoot for but that seems like an afterthought to me.

The tedium of having to do the same thing every time in the airport (buy a ticket, show the card to the camera, put the boarding pass in the slot) gets old fast too. It's busywork. Really, the game reminds me more of an adult version of those toybox games for kids that were around back in the day, something like Broderbund's …

The tedium of having to do the same thing every time in the airport (buy a ticket, show the card to the camera, put the boarding pass in the slot) gets old fast too. It's busywork. Really, the game reminds me more of an adult version of those toybox games for kids that were around back in the day, something like Broderbund's The Playroom. Of course, being a Larry game, the jokes are "risque" but they're really trying to push boundaries in this one. I don't know if it was just the jump to VGA graphics or the new cursor-based system but a lot of it is too much. The early scene with the gynecological exam that Patti has to undergo is just bad taste all around. There is even a later scene where a copier explodes and ink sprays all over Patti so she is painted black. While she is in a rap music recording studio. And it lets her walk around without anyone noticing her there. Yeah. A blackface joke is not good.

A few jokes that weren't that extreme made me laugh though. During on the interviews that Larry does with the women, she's eating food and suddenly a snake tongue shoots out of her mouth to snap up some food with a ridiculous slurping sound effect in tow. I lost it pretty hard at that. I don't think anyone needs to play LSL5 these days though. It doesn't really do anything good and the jokes has aged poorly to say the least. Hopefully the next two are better.
