I'm dropping FFXV for a few days until the update comes out, because I've reached Ch 13. I was prepared to be bored but there are freaking jump scares and I'm not playing through that any second longer than I have to. I despise jump scares with every fiber of my being

5/5 since I got the platinum trophy for it despite the shallow story.

So, from a technical perspective, this game is amazing. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous. The engine feels great and the frame-rate feels solid. So, from a technical perspective, this game is amazing. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous. The engine feels great and the frame-rate feels solid. There are very few loading screens, and when they do show up they're usually only between chapters or story elements, but not out in the open world. Very nice lighting (global illumination?!) and weather effects. The combat is fun (though pretty simple) and has beautiful animations. Excellent music and sound.

Aside from the monster hunts, I found the side quests to be boring. Most felt like simple fetch quests without any connection to the story (maybe I've been spoiled by the astounding quality of The Witcher 3's side quests). I decided to skip all the side quests and just focus on the main story line.

Unfortunately, after 18 hours I couldn't take it anymore: the story, dialog, and complete inconsistency of the world ruined the game for me.

Why is the auto mechanic in a bikini? Why is our car powered by fossil fuel when we have magitek energy sources to power flying airships and battle mechs? Why are the empire soldiers dressed in typical fantasy armor but carrying rifles? If guns exist, why are we using swords and spears? All four members of the party have cell phones, but we only find out about important events via newspaper. The character outfits look great, until you realize that all other civilians are wearing khakis and polo shirts. And so on...

Okay, so I can get past those issues, and to be fair I knew about a lot of them going into the game. But what I can't get past is the unbelievable characters and their dialog. In my opinion, the writing in this game doesn't hold a candle to any of the RPGs I've played recently:

  • The Witcher 3
  • Mass Effect series
  • Dragon Age series
  • Deus Ex series

This game does seem to be getting very good reviews everywhere I look, so they clearly know what type of game their fans want. I guess I've learned that I'm just not into JRPGs anymore that I should stick with "western" RPGs going forward.

Now I'm worried I won't like the FF7 remake and FF12 (my favorite of the series) HD remaster. Hmm.

Played for a few hours with Sam tonight. Really enjoying a lot of touches in this game. And the combat seems interesting too. Looking forward to playing more.

I'm having a ton of fun with this game so far. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm starting to get the hang of the battle system. I don't have any idea what's going on in the story yet really, but it hasn't mattered a whole lot. The game feels very open, and the battle system is fun enough to want to go out and do as many hunts as possible.

I do have a couple of minor complaints so far. You get graded after every battle on Time, Finesse, and Offense. I hate when games do that. Final Fantasy XIII introduced that concept, and I really didn't like it then either. I don't want to have to think about whether I'm performing well in a battle. I'd rather just focus on getting through it. When there are more than a few enemies, it's pretty tough to figure out what the hell is going on. I really like it when you can get one on one with an enemy. When there's seven, they're coming at you from a million angles, and you just get knocked (Noct) around.

Other than that, I'm really looking forward to going back to playing later this week.

I hate podcasts that give overly enthusiastic impressions of a game after only playing an hour, but I will say I enjoyed myself. The combat is a little chaotic for me, but there is a wait mode, vs the active mode that's on by default, that I'm going to try next time I play. We'all see how I feel 5 hours from now.

This is finally going to be showing up today! I'm cautiously optimistic. The reviews are pretty good, and I've heard it's not a really long game surprisingly. That's a plus in my book since I'm old and don't have very much free time to play games.

A handful of Final Fantasy, a dash of ARPG, and a pinch of Shadow of the Colossus. Looking quite good.
