Look, the game had issues. It was trapped in development hell and the final results showed. Not to mention the many contents they'd scrapped in the final product and the way they even cancelled some DLCs and instead putting all those stories in a novel. The game felt unfinished. The side quests were ridiculously repetitive: fetch this, hunt that, upgrade this, ohmyword. Magic system was clunky. I never bothered with it, and thank the game for not pushing me to use magic.

But why the 5 stars?

FFXV was lacking, alright? I'm not blind, but heck I LOVED this game. I loved the characters (specifically the main 4). I loved their little moments, the little gestures they did, the banters, the freaking animations, the link-strikes, the blindside links, pretty much everything to do with how these characters interact. They put a lot of attention to detail regarding the interactions between the four that you'll probably miss if you rush. They felt real, genuine, and natural.

The game lacked in some department, but one thing for sure: it's got heart. And I cried a river at the end of this game. Plus, it has the best fishing game in any game I've ever played (including actual fishing games I've played).

FFXV has become my chill, cozy game. It's cozier than many actual cozy games out there.

Now if only Square could polish FFXV the way it was intended, including all DLC stories in the main game and the scrapped content, integrating the stories from the movie and anime together in the game, letting us explore the world that didn't get explored (because of cut content), giving us more space to get to know some characters that were obviously were written better than actually showed... I'm positive that it could be one of the best JRPGs ever created, because the story was actually very good, if only they didn't present it in such a messy way with too many different medias.

Prompto Argentum was (is) my favorite character, not only in the game, but pretty much across all game characters. The world needs more sunshine like him.

Even though I've long since gotten over the promise Versus XIII had, I still wonder what it would have entailed - and then there's the lost potential of what we did get, in Luna and Niflheim and Ravus and Regis, the relationships and characters and storylines that could have been so much more than they were.

But we got Ignis. And him and his relationship with Noctis, as well as his DLC, are carrying two of these three stars on their backs for me. Love you team mom.

Honestly, I can't decide if my review of this game would be better, or worse, if it weren't for my fondness for the Final Fantasy IP.

My primary problem, the thing that made it nearly impossible to enjoy the rest of the aspects of the game on their own merits, is just how terrible the script and voice acting are. I don't know if this is an issue of poor localization or what, but it seems to me like each line of dialogue is both written and spoken as if the writer and actor have no clue about where the line is occurring in relation to what's going on around the characters or what lines are coming before and after. Even though it's apparent that the voice actors have good emotional range, they very rarely use it appropriately. I briefly tried playing with the original Japanese voice with subtitles, and it WAS a bit better, but because the vast majority of the dialogue occurs while things are happening that require the player's attention, this caused me to miss about 50% of the dialogue and I couldn't follow what was going on.

So, aside from the storytelling being irrevocably marred by the above, what has it got going for it?
There were a few dungeons that were interesting and/or pretty to explore, but most of them (especially those not required for the main story) were overly large with repetitive visuals and uninspired encounters. The open world thing isn't too bad, if you're not pressed for time. One definitely gets the road-trip bromance feel that I assume they were going for, and it's the most solid part of the theme/story. The combat mechanics are so-so. It's exciting to figure out the one neat trick which completely obliterates any given enemy type, but on the flip side many of the enemies are so frustrating to fight if you haven't figured out the trick that it can make you wanna throw in the towel on the game. Most of the sidequests & open world activities seem like they're going to be interesting but then it quickly becomes apparent that they're there to run up your gameplay hour count without really giving you much substance. Each activity has just enough depth to require a bit of figuring out to master, but not enough depth to make it something fun enough to do on its own merit. And most of the rewards for plugging time into them are ultimately disappointing. The primary romantic relationship of the protagonist feels like an afterthought shoehorned into the story, even though it really should be more integral since she's supposedly the reason for the roadtrip in the first place. The DLC are each lying playing a whole new game with new mechanics. If the storytelling had been more inspiring, I'd probably have dove in with gusto, with new mechanics refreshing the gameplay while I devoured the expansion of the storytelling. But as it is, I quit the DLC stories shortly after starting, because the dialogue was just as stilted as the main story and I wasn't invested enough to learn all new mechanics just for the sake of completionism.

A fun final fantasy game

I enjoyed the story and graphics. The game had some great vistas to look upon. My only complaint is the long loading screens and some repetitive combat.

Final Fantasy XV is a game of severe contrasts, lackluster combat and poor narrative pacing. The game features an open world and yet also features a staggering long set of linear corridors. The game features a diverse and large set of interesting characters, but you barely get a chance to learn about them. The game also features action combat that can get remarkably complicated, but the game never challenges players. The game boots up each time by boldly claiming to be a “Final Fantasy for fans and first timers”. As a Final Fantasy fan who loved Final Fantasy VI, VII, IX and X, I completely disagree.

The game’s opening minutes already soured my experience. It shows the protagonist Noctis and his three friends fighting what looks to be a late game boss and then does a flashback to the actual beginning of this game. This whole sequence ruined any suspense the game would try to build later on because I was confident that Noctis and his three friends would all make it to the end. Aside from that odd intro sequence, the opening premise is very strong. Noctis has to marry his childhood friend Lunafreya. The marriage is purely political and is done to ease the tensions between their two kingdoms. Joining Noctis on his bachelor trip, is his best friend Prompto, his advisor Ignis and his bodyguard Gladiolus. The crew runs into trouble when their car runs out of gas and they push the car to the nearest gas station while a cover of “Stand by Me” is performed by Florence and the Machine. It’s a perfect scene that encapsulates the main theme of Final Fantasy XV about brotherhood.

My brief warm fuzzy feelings listening to “Stand by Me” dissipates once our heroes meet Cindy at the gas station, Hammerhead. Cindy is the mechanic who helps maintain and repair your car. Cindy also seems to believe that the best way to fix a car is to wear as little clothes as possible. The game could have made a dark turn, maybe Cindy has a side job because she isn’t earning enough money fixing cars. But no, everyone in this world plays it straight and accepts Cindy’s outrageous attire. Everytime I look at Cindy, all I imagine is a stripper roleplaying as a mechanic. Her character design does not make sense in this game.

In order for Noctis and friends to make it to Lunafreya, they need Gil (money in every Final Fantasy game) as their own local currency is not accepted. Cindy recommends Noctis go on side quests such as hunting for monsters or helping with people’s requests to make money. This is a great and sensible plot device to introduce the open world and give a reasonable excuse so that Noctis can take his time before meeting his bride. Unfortunately you’ll soon realize that most of these side quests are menial and repetitive. They are your typical MMO quests to kill X monsters or fetch Y items. It’s great if you want to check off some boxes, terrible if you want to learn about the world or its characters. The crazy thing is... the way you learn about what’s happening is through codex entries randomly scattered around each town and on the loading screens. There are names and terms that you only discover through these means and it is insulting that most of the world building in the game is written in those entries.

It has taken four paragraphs to talk about the gameplay and for good reason: it is lackluster. The game is an action game, a first in the core Final Fantasy series. The player only has control of Noctis while his three companions are all AI controlled. Noctis attacks by holding the attack button, dodge by holding the dodge button and can warp around as an escape mechanism or as a devastating long range attack. Noctis can also command his AI companions to do techniques when the technique gauge is filled. In a pinch, he can also use items or throw balls of charged fire/ice/thunder at his enemies. Nothing feels skillful or deliberate in the combat. You could add some finesse by switching weapons mid combat or performing warp strike aerial maneuvers but the game never requires the player to ever accomplish these feats. Holding attack and dodge is good enough and will get you through mostly everything. Unless you are severely underleveled, almost all encounters can be won through attrition by chugging very inexpensive potions. Outside of combat, you will be mostly traveling by car. Unfortunately there isn’t much freedom when driving and you are forced to stay on the road until you complete a series of side quests to upgrade your car. I quickly became bored of manually driving so I used the auto drive feature for the rest of the game. Lastly, the game has a tendency to have Noctis jump instead of interacting with an item. It’s funny at first seeing Noctis stupidly jump in front of something he was supposed to pick up, but quickly becomes old and evident that the controls could have been better.

There is more to the plot other than marrying Lunafreya and this is where there will be spoilers. I will try to keep the story beats as broad as possible. Turns out while Noctis and friends spend time hunting monsters, completing fetch quests and camping in the wilderness. The political marriage was a sham and the emperor of Niflheim used the opportunity to take over the kingdom of Lucis without Noctis or Lunafreya knowing. In order for Noctis to take back his kingdom, he needs to power up by collecting the weapons of his ancestors. How a single person collecting all these ancient weapons will somehow turn the tides against the empire is completely left to the player’s imagination.

After collecting a few of the royal arms, the game suddenly becomes indecisive about where the plot is going and changes the main objective. At the start of Chapter 4, our heroes are now focused on receiving the blessings from the Astrals, gods of the world that can grant power to the king of Lucis. Lunafreya also plays a part in this because she is the Oracle, but her role is never explained except in the loading screens. The whole objective of collecting the royal weapons becomes an afterthought. After numerous run-ins with the Astrals, things take yet another turn. Noctis and friends learn that Lunafreya is in possession of the Ring of Lucii, something the game never explains but everyone knows its significance. So in addition to receiving the blessings from the Astrals, Noctis needs to retrieve the Ring of Lucii before the empire does.

Fast forward a couple chapters later, Noctis finally has the Ring of Lucii, blessings from several Astrals and possesses the royal arms. So this means Noctis can finally reclaim his kingdom right? Nope, the game takes another turn and the new objective is to invade the kingdom of Niflheim instead. The reason is because the empire has stolen the Crystal from Insomnia (the capital of Lucis). What the Crystal is and what it does is never explained earlier in the game and now everyone says it’s important because it is used to banish the Darkness. The Darkness and its effects on the world are also never explained until this point. The constantly shifting goals in an effort to complicate the plot, feels cheap and undeserved. It doesn’t help that between most chapters there is a time skip, be it several days, months or even years. It’s a narrative device employed so often that the plot essentially resets itself.

The good news is that the open world is impressive. It is reminiscent of southwest America, full of desert and wooded landscapes. Side quests often lead you to areas with optional dungeons and caves to spelunk. When you want to take a break from exploration and combat, you can cook delicious meals, go fishing, take photos of beautiful vistas and partake in Chocobo races. The banter between Noctis and his companions feels natural and adapts to what they are doing. I admittedly spent longer than expected just exploring the world because I enjoyed the road trip with my brothers in arms. It is with great disappointment to report that the open world is only the first half of the game. The second half of the game is a series of linear corridors with very few side quests, tons of narrative exposition and limited battle mechanics.

Other than Noctis, you only get to learn surface level details about the other named characters. Some characters like Iris and Aranea are introduced only to be forgotten in later chapters. A huge revelation about one of your companions is quickly waived off as if it were nothing. Even Lunafreya, for as much importance as being the Oracle, is assigned a very minor role in the game. The only way to learn more about these characters and the world is to play the DLC, see the Kingsglaive movie and watch the Brotherhood anime. It’s disappointing that substantial character development and backstory is relegated to external content.

I can’t recommend Final Fantasy XV. The plot in the main game feels hobbled together with shifting objectives and poor character development. The open world chapters are a brief enjoyable delight followed by a horrible aftertaste in the second half of the game. The only way to truly understand this game is by spending additional hours watching and playing side content. This is not the worst Final Fantasy Square Enix has released, but there’s nothing magical or memorable about it.

Wow, this game is charming every which way. Everything about it is just.... not what you would expect! But exactly what you would expect at the same time! It's like Walt Disney Film's classic 2007 film, Enchanted, where every moment is simultaneously an inversion of its predecessors, but a fulfillment of them at the same time. The weird car (game, not character) mechanic is so bizarre, so Japanese, and yet so fitting that I almost never travel skipped. The combat is the same way, being this melange of real time and menu based combat that does, indeed, work quite well, despite how it might appear and feel at first blush. But the real standout in this game, where I give Square Enix so much credit, is how the characters are written and interact with each other. I loved these guys, you can't help but love these guys, they just embody friendship and camaraderie in a really fundamental way. The whole experience is worth it just to join the King and his Guard on their journey.

That said it does lose some points for its unevenness near the end, where it just makes some major mistakes by stripping you of your friends and forcing you down linear hallways of horror (no really there are jump scares). It's just a jarring tonal shift in all capacities. But even still it is well worth one's time and shouldn't be missed.

FFXV has an issue that many JRPGs suffer from - except in reverse. Most JRPGs are super slow to start and require a bit of dedication to get to the good stuff.

FFXV starts out as an amazing experience. The first ~5 chapters are fantastic - you have an entire world to explore, tons of side quests, bounties, and skills to level up (like Noct's fishing). If the entire game felt like this I would rate it 9/10. Unfortunately once you progress into the main story the game becomes extremely linear and strips all that freedom away.

I have yet to finish the game (put it down on Chapter 13 - and this was after the update that supposedly made this chapter better). I plan to return to the game eventually on the hopes that the endgame can rekindle the magic that the game started with.

The story is pretty weak. I watched Kingsglaive before the game launched and I feel like a lot of the material from the movie should have been cutscenes in the game, some of the plot wasn't explained very well in game.

The English voices are unbearable - switch to Japanese right away. The music is passable but I didn't hear any tracks that blew me away. You won't find anything on the same caliber as Aerith's theme from FFVII.

The game looked pretty good on XB1 - there was a lot of texture pop and the dynamic resolution is noticeable but the frame pacing is acceptable.

Now on to the good stuff - the combat. It's very fun to play. It lacks some depth but I didn't mind. The magic system is different from a traditional final fantasy game - it's almost like the draw system from FFVIII without the junction system.

The world is massive and has some impressive visuals. The banter between characters is charming at first but lacks variety. The characters themselves aren't well developed in the main story - hopefully the DLC addresses this but be aware that the main game does not.

FFXV is the perfect example of "what could have been". With just a little more love and attention give to the story and characters, and a little polish added to the later chapters to retain the freedom from the earlier segments; it could have been one of the best installments yet.

I plan to edit this review once I have beaten the game and experienced the content post-campaign. As it stands now - 6/10.

Finally, for a long time Final Fantasy series has produced something playable. Somebody can argue with me that FFXIII was playable but let’s return this subject some other time.

This game delivers traditional Final Fantasy plot where half of the story is going to get over your head and overall experience will be scattered around until you read couple of wiki-articles. That’s why I’m not going to talk about the plot because after some wiki exploring and couple of youtube-videos. I still don’t understand all of it; I’m a prince, I’m going to marry a girl who is oracle. My father is killed. My kingdom is invaded and now I’m a runner and still going to meet my girl…and then shit happens.

Battle mechanic is going to give us “new” (oh there was a FFXII) real time wait-mode combat (if you decide to use this on setting menu), causing some annoying interruption every 30 seconds. While you can use libra in the wait mode you have to wait while bushing the button something between 10s to one minute depending enemy’s strength.

When main guest line starts getting boring you have many side guest options available. Anything for special Hunt-missions (tonberry is not suppose to run towards you while doing aerial parkour. It’s really disturbing) to errand boy running, oh and don’t forget some stranger’s car problems. When genuine boredom is starting hitting in you can always go fishing. Although is you are after level 10 skills from fishing you will hate this after a while.

“I admire your willingness to put artistic integrity over marketability.” -Hobbes, Calvin & Hobbes

It should probably be said that this review contains spoilers for a fairly new game. If that sort of thing bothers you, please be aware that I’ll discuss the minutiae of the storyline in the Narrative section of this post and I’ll only talk about the base premise of the game in other sections, including the body of text below.

Final Fantasy XV is the fifteenth installment in the acclaimed franchise that obviously peaked in its single digits. Anticipation reached an insane pitch for this game. Why not? It was under development for eight years. Everyone was expecting great things, more or less, but after all of the multimedia tie-ins and Platinum Demo, does Final Fantasy XV hold up as the paramount RPG we all wanted?

Everything you’ve come to love and respect about Final Fantasy is here, like patronizingly easy quick time events, a tiny storyline with missing details, billions of boring fetch quests, unending loading screens, unresponsive NPCs, zero character development, a bloated open-world setting, a stamina bar, a painstakingly linear third act, and stealth mode. I’m being sarcastic, of course. Nobody expects these things from a Final Fantasy game. Nobody asked for these things from a Final Fantasy game. But my apprehension is that this is going to increasingly define this series as it continues on into the future.

Now of course it is true that any work should be judged on its own merits and not on the basis of its peers or its franchise context. That could be argued and I can agree with that to an extent, but this is one of the longest running and most beloved RPG series of all time so it’s easy to see why this fifteenth mainline title would be so often contrasted against the hits of the past.

The game opens with four friends travelling through the desert. It seems their car, the Regalia, has broken down so they’re forced to get out and push it. There’s a bit of banter between them to give us an idea of their personalities. The screen pans up as a cover of “Stand by Me” plays through the hot air and the title of the game crystallizes the fears in my heart: Final Fantasy XV. I remember saying “Please don’t let slowly pushing a car down the road be characteristic of this entire game!”

Yet I think that’s the perfect way to explain this visually beautiful but cumbersome and disjointed game. How silly is that, anyway? Their home city was still in sight. They could’ve went back for gas. Send Prompto. He runs fast. Or better yet, they have cellphones. Why not call for AAA? Heck the very next outpost has its own resident tow service…

So, from a technical perspective, this game is amazing. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous. The engine feels great and the frame-rate feels solid. There are very few loading screens, and when they do show up they're usually only between chapters or story elements, but not out in the open world. Very nice lighting (global illumination?!) and weather effects. The combat is fun (though pretty simple) and has beautiful animations. Excellent music and sound.

Aside from the monster hunts, I found the side quests to be boring. Most felt like simple fetch quests without any connection to the story (maybe I've been spoiled by the astounding quality of The Witcher 3's side quests). I decided to skip all the side quests and just focus on the main story line.

Unfortunately, after 18 hours I couldn't take it anymore: the story, dialog, and complete inconsistency of the world ruined the game for me.

Why is the auto mechanic in a bikini? Why is our car powered by fossil fuel when we have magitek energy sources to power flying airships and battle mechs? Why are the empire soldiers dressed in typical fantasy armor but carrying rifles? If guns exist, why are we using swords and spears? All four members of the party have cell phones, but we only find out about important events via newspaper. The character outfits look great, until you realize that all other civilians are wearing khakis and polo shirts. And so on...

Okay, so I can get past those issues, and to be fair I knew about a lot of them going into the game. But what I can't get past is the unbelievable characters and their dialog. In my opinion, the writing in this game doesn't hold a candle to any of the RPGs I've played recently:

  • The Witcher 3
  • Mass Effect series
  • Dragon Age series
  • Deus Ex series

This game does seem to be getting very good reviews everywhere I look, so they clearly know what type of game their fans want. I guess I've learned that I'm just not into JRPGs anymore that I should stick with "western" RPGs going forward.

Now I'm worried I won't like the FF7 remake and FF12 (my favorite of the series) HD remaster. Hmm.

  • Chapter 13 - if you've played the game, you'll know what I mean

"Final Fantasy XV was a truly amazing gaming experience. Yes there are some odd design choices here and there, but they did little to dampen the overall enjoyment I had with this game. The world is a beautiful, well-structured, addictive creation, just short of a masterpiece and I can't wait until I revisit it again."

Played for a few hours with Sam tonight. Really enjoying a lot of touches in this game. And the combat seems interesting too. Looking forward to playing more.

20 hours into this game and I've barely progressed in the story because I'm having so much fun going through the sidequests and hunts and eating at every diner I stop in

SO MANY CLOSEUPS OF FOOD

THIS GAME MAKES ME SO HUNGRY GODDAMN

I'm having a ton of fun with this game so far. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm starting to get the hang of the battle system. I don't have any idea what's going on in the story yet really, but it hasn't mattered a whole lot. The game feels very open, and the battle system is fun enough to want to go out and do as many hunts as possible.

I do have a couple of minor complaints so far. You get graded after every battle on Time, Finesse, and Offense. I hate when games do that. Final Fantasy XIII introduced that concept, and I really didn't like it then either. I don't want to have to think about whether I'm performing well in a battle. I'd rather just focus on getting through it. When there are more than a few enemies, it's pretty tough to figure out what the hell is going on. I really like it when you can get one on one with an enemy. When there's seven, they're coming at you from a million angles, and you just get knocked (Noct) around.

Other than that, I'm really looking forward to going back to playing later this week.

I managed to play an hour last night after downloading the 9 gig day one patch. I hate podcasts that give overly enthusiastic impressions of a game after only playing an hour, but I will say I enjoyed myself. I hate podcasts that give overly enthusiastic impressions of a game after only playing an hour, but I will say I enjoyed myself. The combat is a little chaotic for me, but there is a wait mode, vs the active mode that's on by default, that I'm going to try next time I play. We'all see how I feel 5 hours from now.

This is finally going to be showing up today! I'm cautiously optimistic. The reviews are pretty good, and I've heard it's not a really long game surprisingly. That's a plus in my book since I'm old and don't have very much free time to play games.

A handful of Final Fantasy, a dash of ARPG, and a pinch of Shadow of the Colossus. Looking quite good.
