I had played Mario Kart 8 when it was released on Wii U and really enjoyed it, and I decided to finally crack down and play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch around the time Nintendo announced Mario Kart World for the Switch 2. Right off the bat, in terms of the number of characters and levels, you couldn't ask for more then Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Not only does this have an absurd lineup of characters, but a ton of tracks, many of which are updated versions of tracks from the franchise's entire history. I feel like the Nintendo first-party games that came out of the Switch were often celebrating Nintendo's history and really going all-in with the possibility of their titles, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe certainly does this for the Mario Kart franchise.
I say all that and I truly enjoyed my time with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for sure. But I think this game ratchets the difficulty up in a way that I've never seen happen in the Mario Kart franchise like this before. 50cc and 100cc? Sure, I'm having a lot of fun. 150cc? Grab your ass, because it's about to get rocked. The other racers are flawless, the number of items is absurd, and I felt like I was being lulled into a false sense of security with every race, doing fine, until someone would shell my ass at the last second, often making me restart an entire tour from the beginning. I must've tried to perfect a 150cc tour at least a dozen times, and after a while, I just had to give up. I also don't really care for the handling of weight, having to figure out which car, wheels, and parachute will help you best in a race. I dunno man, just let me race, and in the case of the 150cc tours, probably lose.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a blast, until it wasn't for me. And as someone who has played this series my entire life, I was shocked by how hard I found the difficulty, and even before I got to the hardest level! I guess Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is everything for everyone, and if you want the challenge that 150cc and 200cc have to offer, be my guest, but I can't believe how much I struggled once this game got a bit more difficult.
