Sweet, new tracks drop next week! My partner and I have been hoping Wave 2 would release any day now since they were promised for Summer.

Just played through the new tracks. Got to say, I'm disappointed.

These do not feel like Mario Kart 8 tracks (which is understandable, I guess, since they aren't). No anti-gravity, worse graphics and overall feeling of phoning it in. Shroom Ridge was fun to drive, though, and Ninja Hideout is detailed enough to be the most MK8-like of the new …

Shroom Ridge was fun to drive, though, and Ninja Hideout is detailed enough to be the most MK8-like of the new tracks but I can't say I really liked it on my first drive. The music is good, however.

In any case, I really hope they step up their game. This just brings the overall quality of MK8D down. It was such a perfect game and these feel like a stain on it.

I was wrapping up an Animal Crossing session and noticed the download bar on the Mario Kart icon. Then it zipped through the download. I started up the game thinking there was no way it was ready (since I saw earlier that the DLC should be dropping at 7pm my time), and the two new cups are there and seemingly ready to play!

Alas, they can't be started up yet. Three and a half hours!

Well I thought that was a very good Nintendo Direct. Very excited for Mario Kart DLC and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Curious to try Chrono Cross too as I've not played it. And another Warriors game should scratch that Fire Emblem itch for a bit although I would have preferred the real thing.

Is this the best Mario Kart ever made? Most likely.

I still love this course though

More playstyles seem viable, but I was so used to inside drift bikes on the Wii that I cannot use bikes in this game. The deluxe version did not add much to the Wii U version since I had the DLC tracks, but I would recommend buying it just for the ability to play on the go. Growing up as an only child with not many others in the neighborhood meant that racing games were one of the best entertainment values for me. If you enjoy playing against AI then you will get your money's worth with this game.

The perfect game to play with friends. The single player mode is ok, but compared to other racing games it's not even close. Mario Kart always is better with friends. This and Smash Bros. are two must haves for couch co-op that can't be found anywhere else. Graphics, items, fun, all very high.

Better than Double Dash

Ok fine, I'll admit it. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is better than Mario Kart: Double Dash. This is the ultimate kart-racing game. I've accepted it and moved on.

Okay, let's start with the positives. The positives are basically the whole game. There. There are your positives. This game looks gorgeous, plays beautifully, ably destroys your friendships, and has some of the best tracks in the entire series and maybe even in all of arcade racing (Mount Wario!). If not for a couple major flaws, it would be quite possibly the best Mario Kart game ever. And with the Deluxe Edition, it's on the Nintendo Switch, it's quite possibly my favorite gaming platform since the original Nintendo DS, and it's an absolute blast to play on it.

HOWEVER.

The original version of this game actively punished you for being in first place. Mario Kart has always limited the amount of items you get in first place, but this one goes an extra mile. In first place, the only items that you can get that you can possibly defend yourself with are the banana peel and (I believe) the very occasional green shell. But if you think that you'll get any of those ever, keep dreaming. Because there's one other power up that you'll get in first place. For the first time since Super Mario Kart, the Coin item makes its triumphant return.

And it's all you'll ever fucking get.

Yippee. Skippee.

Nintendo, I appreciate your willingness to give your best kart racers a high salary, but one extra coin and the world's wimpiest speed boost doesn't exactly do me much good when I'm getting pelted from behind with red shells because FOR SOME REASON SECOND PLACE GETS TO HAVE THREE REDS SOMETIMES.

With those two things combined, this game basically punishes players for driving really well and rewards players for getting the right power-ups. Good drivers will still be able to win frequently, but definitely not as frequently as they should. It holds up random chance over skill and brings everyone down to exactly the same level regardless of experience, and that's terrible for a multiplayer racing game, IMO.

The Deluxe version of this game retains this flaw. However, it does something even more baffling that furthers the ridiculously even playing field. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe adds three new optional features that are on by default:

  1. Tilt controls, which are pretty whatever
  2. Auto-accelerate, which means that you don't have to hold down the A-button in order to accelerate, which some people like but I think is dumb and for babies
  3. Smart steering

Yes. Smart steering.

In Mario Kart.

Yes. It's exactly what you think it is.

About to hit a wall? BAM! AUTO-SWERVE! Now you're right back where you need to be! About to head into the grass? The game geeeeently guides you back onto the track! About to take that sick shortcut that you love? Whoa, there, cowboy! It looked like you were about to bump into something! We can't have that! Get back on the track!

This feature is hideous and stands in direction opposition to everything I believe in. Yes, okay, it's optional, but the fact that it's on by default is outright insulting. I don't need this! Why do you think that I need this? Why do you think that 98% of the people who play this game needs this?! This feature, especially when coupled with the other two optional features, leeches all of the skill and player expression out of the game and makes it into a game that you can play with your feet. I get that it's for kids, but kids should just learn to play Mario Kart properly instead of swerving off the track like dumbasses. Besides, it builds character. This garbage builds laziness. Laziness and subversive political agendas.

Either this version of the game was created by radical communists as some kind of recruitment tool... or Nintendo needs to stop being Nintendo.

My experience seriously attempting Mario Kart 200cc in single player...

Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail. 60 points and three stars! Cramped hand.

I almost never get 1 or 2 stars. It's always either not even getting the gold trophy or three stars for me. not sure why.

I'm kind of scared to try and do 200cc. I'm also working through beating all the staff ghosts and am well over halfway.

My kart setup of choice? The airship with the Master Cycle wheels and Ludwig driving it. I'm pretty killer at it and it's underwater speed bonus is kind of a game changer on a lot of tracks.

“If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.” -Mario Andretti

Full disclosure, I’m not a fan of racing games. That’s why I hardly review ’em. Unless there’s some kind of gimmick, I avoid them for their perceived uniformity and blandness. So then why did I just impulse-buy Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, recently released on the Nintendo Switch? Because the game looked like it really delivers Nintendo’s favorite word: Fun. And it I can attest that it does. It is exhilarating, heart-pounding, joyous, innocent and unadulterated fun.

I cannot overstate how much that surprised me. Mario Kart is a 25-year-old Nintendo franchise and I checked out from it 20 years ago. The novelty of playing a racing game as my favorite Nintendo characters wasn’t enough to draw me into every new title they put out in the series, as with each new title that novelty wore thin. I loved the founding game on the SNES and Mario Kart 64, but most of the filler in between flew right past me.

And then comes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Here is a game I was never excited about back when it was merely an announcement for the Switch. I followed those announcements pretty closely and while Breath of the Wild, the Nindies, and the games by Square tickled my fancy, MK 8 Deluxe was on the same tier as Arms, that being the “I couldn’t care less” tier.

Then it launched. Then everyone was playing it. Then it started getting galactic reviews. Then I accidentally purchased it and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve been going too fast.

Touted as the best Mario Kart game, which is really saying something considering how many go-kart outings these characters have seen, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a port of the Wii U game Mario Kart 8. Nintendo apparently refined and balanced certain aspects of the original game while adding and expanding features for the re-release. This was undeniably a smart move on their part. With the Wii U having sold as poorly as it did, there aren’t a whole lot of people who played Mario Kart 8 and therefore this might as well be a totally brand new game. It was to me.

The goal of MK8D is the same as all racing games: complete a certain number of laps around a racetrack and reach the finish line in first place. There are generally twelve other racers on the track with you. Racetracks include underwater and anti-gravity sections testing the limits of your skills. You modify your personalized kart based on the body, the tires, and the glider. New kart parts are unlocked after collecting a certain amount of coins, 30 coins for each part until reaching 450 coins, after which the requirement changes to 50 before changing again at 1200 to 100. Coins are scattered across the racetracks.

During a race, you rely on speed, acceleration, weight, handling, and traction to succeed, as well as picking up items from item boxes to use against your opponents. Some examples of items take the form of banana peels, mushrooms that give you a burst of speed, invincibility stars, and homing red koopa shells. You can trip up your opponents with these to pull ahead, while keeping an eye out for obstacles, jumps, and boosts, braking when absolutely necessary. A mark of the series, you can make your kart take a little hop which can be used to drift around turns. Drifting longer triggers special boosts, which are essential. These core elements of items and trick turns make MK8D a very fast-paced and aggressive racing experience with tremendous placing mobility, meaning you can work your way back to first place easily most of the time or contrariwise you can find yourself in last place just as easily.

MK8D features four main modes of gameplay: single player, multiplayer, online play, and wireless play for multiple Switch users to race against each other. There are also four sub-modes: Grand Prix, Time Trials, VS Race, and Battle. Online play only features the VS Race and Battle modes.

Grand Prix is the single player go-to, essentially the campaign mode though a friend can join in on the action. Grand Prix puts you in a 4-race cup competition. There are 12 different cups and 4 unique racetracks in each cup, for a total of 48 racetracks in the game. Unfortunately, Deluxe does not introduce new racetracks for Grand Prix. Delightedly, though, some of them are returning tracks from previous Mario Kart games: the original Rainbow Road from the Super Nintendo and Toad’s Turnpike from the N64. For old fans of the series like me, this was that right touch of Nintendo nostalgia.

This is the Switch review:

9.5/10

They improved everything with the Deluxe version. Coming from someone who owned the Wii U one but never bought the DLC, this was definitely worth the money. It's a ton of content out of the box, plus a pretty awesome battle mode. Most of the issues are improved, it's just a great game, and arguably the best Mario Kart ever (though Double Dash has a place in my heart). One of the best games of the year.

If I owned all of the DLC for Wii U I may have been a little more hesitant to buy this, but I probably still would have just to have games for my Switch.

My Switch rating should have been 10 if I followed what I said in my Wii U review, but sometimes I just get high on something and rate it higher than I should have. Maybe the Wii U version is a 9 and this a 9.5, but I think it would be more accurate for me to give this a 9.8 or 9.9 because it's not in my top-tier favourites, it's the tier right below which indicates a truly fantastic, legendary game, but it's just not in my Top 50 (or whatever). But I rate on a .5 system, anyway.

This is the original Wii U review I had:

9.5/10

It pretty much gives me exactly what I want from a Mario Kart, and it SHOULD be a 10 but the battle mode is ass and I hate how you have to unlock all the maps in single player in order to play them with a friend online... I also hate the lack of in-game chat and how you can't play against other real people if you're playing online with a friend. That seems like a lot to complain about but it's pretty minor really, because the rest of the game is wonderful.

The tracks are awesome and there's a lot of them, with a good mixture of new and old. There are a lot of different characters and vehicle customizations, and above all else, the core gameplay is still very Mario Kart -- which means its awesome. The anti-gravity adds to the experience, and some of the tracks are just ridiculously crazy.
