I only fired this up to test out my new PC. I'd only played it on PS4 before, but this game is so rad I ended up playing through the entire thing again anyway.

One thing I really appreciate is how well it captures the spirit of the original: the mixture of dark sci-fi and eldritch hell, the killer soundtrack, the transition from fear to glee as you go from recoiling from every Hell Knight to sprinting up to Barons of Hell because your fully upgraded Super Shotgun is so fantastically overpowered. Even the verticality of the arenas feels right—while the original didn't even have jumping due to limitations of the engine, there's a common drive to never stop moving and never stop shooting that runs through both.

In terms of setting, I think I actually prefer the mix in this game. Knee-Deep in the Dead is my favourite episode of 1993 because it has those strong sci-fi elements which unfortunately largely disappear in the later episodes (plus the levels become labyrinthine in a way I don't find particularly enjoyable). 2016 bounces you between the Mars facility and Hell a few times, which I like.

The story is surprisingly engaging too. It's not exactly deep (this is Doom after all), but the characters of Hayden and Pierce are interesting and the backstory established by the PDAs is quite cool.

Anyway yeah this game still kicks ass.

The new Doom is nice, the hellish sci-fi horror shooting is an adecuate modernization of the classic. The heavy metal soundtrack of course is a wonderful addition and in general the levels are very atmospheric. The weapons feel okayish, to be honest, the gunplay is just right around average, maybe below. The glory kills are not half as fun as the devs think they are plus the high hp clumpsiness of the enemies makes Doom's combat feel slow. You're not massively killing hordes of demons, you are putting full magazines into single units. It just doesn't feel nice.

The platforming feels very clumpsy and unncessary also, nowhere near as good as in Destiny 2 where it actually was fun due to the nice and smooth movement. The platforming honestly kills the game for me because it's so bad. In general trying to progress to the next room does not give the same satisfaction as it did in the classic. Collecting keys and aimlessly running around is, in the end, just annoying and not justifiable by trying to maintain that aspect. Especially because the solutions are not really satisfying to find, because it's often just one brainless jump you could have done but oversaw.

The quest marker target is not very precise as well. Unfortunately, running around in circles made up a big part of this experience. Drags it down a lot, not enjoyable for me. The game in general just doesn't feel fluent, and that is absolutely what it's supposed to do. There should be more enemies, being killed more quickly, your movement speed higher, moving through more space in less time. Doom feels slow and has no flow, and that's a terrible thing to say about such game. But maybe this is just what they call arena shooting what I don't like, I don't know.

Don't get me wrong! This game is quite cool! Although, I think it's just for someone else.

Violence packed, gory, bloody and fast DOOM delivers! Oh hell, it does! Amazing level desing, challenging AI, playability at its best. One goes through stages killing and drilling everything that moves, because that's what they want to do. And, for me, that's where I found the first problem. A few hours into the game, the mechanics just got more and more of the same: small enemies first, a bit larger enemies after, larger enemies after, even larger enemies after. Change the room and more of the same. After a while, I just wanted to say "f**k it, it's not worth my time" and run away. I couldn't. The game doesn't allow that. Maybe that's the whole point, but I find it tiring.

It is amazingly paced and the soundtrack delivers! Beautifully orchestrated with metal tunes, right in touch with the feeling of the game.

If you want an amazing FPS experience, DOOM is the game for you.

It's good fun, but I just became too old for this kind of games, I guess.

Slaying demons to heavy metal has never been this fun. The reboot of Doom is mostly a success, bringing forward the viscerally satisfying energy of the original into true 3D. This is a game that encourages you to get up close and personal with enemies, rewards risky gameplay, and provides a variety of weapons to suit your own play style.

It also provides secrets and collectibles that provide an incentive to replay levels and explore them thoroughly. I liked these as they were fun to hunt, without being too obscure to find (though the occasional doors that wouldn't let you backtrack were frustrating). The exploration also rewards you with the capacity to upgrade your weapons and giving them broader functionality. To fully upgrade them, you must perform challenges that tell you to kill enemies a certain way, which teaches you new ways to use them.

The aesthetics are serviceable, though a bit generic. The demons look cool as hell, worthy renditions of their old-school counterparts. However, a lot of the environments have this industrial / mono-chromatic hue look that plagues shooters these days. A couple of locations, such as The Necropolis, are noteworthy exceptions.

There is a story, and it is mostly unobtrusive to the action. There are a couple of sequences that take control away from you for a couple minutes, which feels like way too much in a game so fast paced as this one. The tone really makes you feel like a badass, though I felt it was a bit too serious. A bit of campiness would have helped make this even better of a power fantasy in my opinion.

All in all, this was a fantastic game to unwind and give me an adrenaline rush. I loved the original games and it is nice to see their spirit so well translated here. Absolutely recommended for any fan of action games.

I'm not a horror game fan and excessive gore usually turns me off, but in DOOM (2016) things are... different. YOU are the one the demons are running from while incredible music blares, and ripping them apart in gloriously smooth 60 FPS almost never gets old. The story, though taking a back seat, is never totally forgotten and is super interesting for those that care to read into the lore.

Near the end the thrills start to feel a tiny bit repetitive, but by the time you finish, you will feel like you are getting off a roller-coaster. Exhausted, exhilarated, and wanting more.

So, I approached this knowing it was a straight shooter with no complications. I had heard it was so fixated on his being a shooter that it took the piss out of narrative games and over complications. And it does that, in the first few minutes, but then narration kicks in and suddenly you have to spend XP on upgrades. That bummed me out. If I wanted to stand still while listening to people talking, I would have played a Valve FPS. If I wanted to choose upgrades, I would have played a Deus Ex or an Arkane FPS. If I wanted to consult the map for secrets, I would have played a Metroid Prime. But then I realized I was being silly and I enjoyed it. Also, actually, the narrative is simple, relatively fun and not intrusive, while the upgrade system and the whole map thing is (1) very well made and (2) kinda completely skippable.

That being said, this is an incredibly fun game, with excellent shooting mechanics, great level design, a good rhythm, lovely homages to the history of Doom and a huge amount of extra content. My only real complaint is a very personal one but also something that really bugged me: I think it's too long. Now, keep in mind, I think almost every single triple A game is too long and also I'm perfectly aware that it's a matter of personal taste: if you're really, really into the core loop and the mechanics, no game is too long (I mean, I played Prey for 34 hours and I didn't complain about length). But still, during the last two/three missions I was kinda bored, even though they had good moments. But, as I said, that's me, I guess.

Fast, furious and gory

DOOM is indeed a masterful remastered Doom. It does the same things with more pixels and options.

It is flowing, hectic, visceral and, alas, repetitive. After I've killed 100 demons, killing 200 or 300 no longer felt fresh or innovative. It was exciting, as anything that plays with one's Fight or Flight instinct is, but I'm glad I've finished the …

It was exciting, as anything that plays with one's Fight or Flight instinct is, but I'm glad I've finished the campaign, and I have no intention of going back.

It is a good thing that id added the map editor and multiplayer sides, as they increased longevity in the grandfather of shooters' newest iterations, but it's not for me. One trip through Hell is quite enough and I've never been a fan of searching for "secrets" or boss fights.

I have to give it to them, though - DOOM has the best gore I've ever seen and it is very intense without resorting to the jump scares of Doom 3.

The gameplay in this is top notch. Your engaged the entire time. Mostly. There are some smaller cutscenes and these kind of "lore stones" which kind of reads you bits of this demon bible. But other than that its basically hours of carnage. 😊

What surprised me though was how interesting the lore is. Like theres a really interesting history you hear about through the lore stones and really makes the experience feel bigger than you think. They're worth staying and listening to.

Theres not much of a story. Its basically go here kill the thing, go there destroy the device but thats ok to me. You're basically a murder machine and thats the story. But thats a very minor complaint in my opinion. And thats coming from someone who holds story above most other things in a game.

The levels also look fantastic. I wouldn't have even mentioned it but I was literally blown away by how things looked multiple times. Especially when you get to the hell levels. Man, that look good! 😂

I almost forgot about the music and I'm ashamed. This has some amazing music the way it adds fuel to the gameplay fire is awesome. I'm considering getting the soundtrack. The songs that get you pumped to kill demons. The atmospheric electro-infused bits are great too, making a nice mood.

Pros: -insanely fast and smooth gameplay -beautiful levels -killer music -fascinating lore

Cons: -simple story

Overall, crazy fun game and Doom Eternal looks great. Keep 'em comin. 😈

Overall this was a great game for FPS genre. The pacing was super fast and intense all while at the same time you felt like you were unstoppable. Some enemies can hit hard and don't go down easy, but as long as you stay on the move get your stats upgraded and unload all you have you will win the fight. My scoring may not seem accurate, but I feel the gameplay made up for what the other aspects lacked.

The graphics were good and the audio was amazing. The main reason I give the presentation a lower score is that after a while there was a definite repetitiveness to the level design leaving me feeling a bit bored at times. The art style was very well done.

The story is where the game lacked most. It was interesting that there is a concept that Hell exists as another dimension, but you never really find out who your character is and the conflict feels very basic. Go stop this go get this item. Be alone almost the entire time to destroy demons. It was a very rigid story that feels a lot like earlier games that had less depth.

I didn't get really into the other features for Multiplayer and Snapmap. I do like games that give you the opportunity to be able to create ex. Little Big Planet, Infamous 2) I will have to go back and spend some time with it.

TRY OUT DOOM, IT WILL SAVE YOUR MISERABL LIFE.
