"Tahira: Echoes of the Astral Empire is a tactical turn-based RPG, set on a world fallen into a medieval dark age after the collapse of a spacefaring civilization. You must guide Tahira, the 20-year-old princess of Avestan, on the most challenging night of her life as she fights to save her people from the genocidal Astral Empire. You’ll fight large-scale tactical turn-based battles using guerrilla warfare tactics, including ambushing enemies, taking cover and knocking foes off cliffs. You’ll also develop relationships with those traveling with you and uncover secrets of a time when man traversed the stars with impunity."

Such a waste of might have been a good game
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

The story of this game has some really interesting potential; a fallen interstellar empire has reverted to a pseudo-medieval state of technology and now must fight off the remnants of the old imperial army. And it centers around a young princess coming to grips with the responsibilities of becoming a new and young ruler of a besieged kingdom. It’s just unfortunate that the story comes out only in a few cutscenes intermingled with just plain bad and unfun combat.

The combat is isometric, tactical, and turn-based. You control a squad of allies, each a member of specific group, and each group has their own unique ability. But there’s none of the squad building customization of terrain/cover options of a game like Fell Seal or Wasteland 3. It’s just a flat grid with a few obstructions that serve no purpose but to hinder movement. And the characters in your squad might have cutscene personality but in combat they have one or two predetermined special abilities. No specific builds or anything. Just about the only good thing I can say about the combat is that, when I switched to a lower difficulty to speed things along, I found that you can simply …

All in all, just a disappointing game. I hate to speak ill of something that someone worked hard on and may have put great love into but it’s just not fun. Even the story is simply revealed to the player through scripted cutscenes where Tahira asks a set of 2 or 3 predetermined questions to NPCs. Just enough to reveal that there is lore, just no way to consume it in an enjoyable manner.

I bought this game back in 2016. I played it for a bit before quitting for some reason. I thought I'd played for at least a while but my Steam playtime is only 48 minutes. Anyway, it seems to work on the Deck so I think I'll try it again.
