Hasn't aged super well

These days, well... It's quite floaty, feels pretty strange to play. After a while u get into the grouve and you can just completely turn off your brain. All enemies + bosses, you can just push out an edge for instant death, which is a fun way to play it.

Played a few hours and it's a pretty good time, if u wanna rest ur brain this is great.

An underrated spin-off of the Prince of Persia series that definitely deserves attention. First of all, it is an incredibly beautiful world, with interesting graphic style, acrobatics, boss battles, and new magical powers. Of course, the game lacks challenge, depth of the story, variety, and fullness of the world. But immersing yourself in this beautiful world is exciting and fun.

Arhhh! I was on my way home! I had more gold than you could... I'd've had wine! Women! I'd've had carpets this thick. Now I'm stuck with an angry god and a crazy woman!

Arhhh! I was on my way home! I had more gold than you could... I'd've had wine! Women! I'd've had carpets this thick. Now I'm stuck with an angry god and a crazy woman!

I'm a fan of all of the Prince of Persia's newer games (starting with The Sands of Time), and when I played the series' 2008 reboot over a decade ago, I loved every minute of it. It's a fantastic game.

Prince 2008 has cel-shaded graphics and it looks absolutely gorgeous, both when the city's lands are corrupted and dark and when they're healed and bright. It's just one of the most beautiful games I've played. Despite the gameplay core staying true to the classic platforming and combat formula, it feels very different this time around: all levels are now interconnected and have tons of collectible light orbs, which makes fluent world traversing so incredibly exciting. Platforming is very similar to Mirror's Edge, which btw came out at the same time. As I have fear of heights, both these games made my palms sweat like crazy. People complain about the no-death mechanic, but I think it's pretty cool, considering it is actually a mechanic. Also, I don't think the game is too easy - it was just fine for me.

Oh yeah, there's one more thing that makes this game special. It is Prince (a thief, actually) and Elika's relationship told through mostly optional dialogues. The story itself is okay, but the dialogues are where the script truly shines. Tons of hilarity, flirting, teasing, characters' backstories and just chatting - I loved it. It is what makes you care for the characters and, eventually, the story. And Nolan North, who is the voice of Prince, is the icing on a cake. He plays it exactly like he did it with Nathan Drake, which is a perfect fit for this game.

That's how I remembered Prince 2008 and all of this has still been there, when I re-played it recently. However, nostalgia is tricky - we tend to forget the bad. Lots of repetition in everything (in a way, even Prince commented on that: "Run, jump, dive, defeat. Run, jump, dive, defeat. I think I'm getting the hang of it."), many similar boss battles, trial and error traversal sections involving special abilities (seriously, fuck camera in the sprinting sections, which are also way too long at times, and fuck some obstacles in the flying sections). I've played a ton of games featuring all kinds of QTE's, but it's in the Prince of Persia reboot that I've had the hardest time with them. No idea whether the problem is within them or me, but I have failed most of them (even some of the button mashing ones, holy shit), so those were annoying as well. And the last disappointing thing I'd like to mention is the fact that despite there's one thousand collectible orbs the game doesn't let you come back and finish them after the credits by default. To be able to do it, you need to make a separate save file when you cleanse all the lands and load it later. Collecting the orbs is super fun in this game, so I wish I knew this in my first playthrough.

For a long time I've wanted to re-play Prince 2008, but not only because I loved it so much. There's a DLC piece called Epilogue, that came out about half a year after the main game, that ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Because of reasons I couldn't obtain the DLC the first time I played the game, so I've been thinking of coming back to it to see how the story ends. It's been very disappointing to play it a decade later and to find out that it has no influence on the story whatsoever. It's also significantly harder at times and the secondary boss battles have turned from simply annoying to really frustrating. And the long sprinting sections with shity camera are back as well. Overall, Epilogue was disappointing and totally not worth a decade's wait. Btw fuck Ubisoft for not releasing it on PC.

Despite all of my complaints, I still love the 2008 reboot and I wish we could have a worthy sequel to it, but we're way past that point now. Anyway, there's always a chance Ubisoft comes up with some clever idea how to bring the series back. Despite their focus on huge open-world, I'm going to stay optimistic.

Hey ! I just finished (again) Prince of Persia (2008) and was pretty surprised how well it still stands up for itself nowadays. On the visual side it looks still neat and clean, totally assuming its cel Shading aspect and it works very well from start to finish. Musics are pleasant, they give the right mood at the right moment with sometimes some dynamic change very well executed. On the gameplay side, here's a bit of a bugger : there is input latency. While controling the "new" prince, you can feel something wonky in the control input. It makes it kind of unpleasant the first couple of hours but once you get hold of the movements: you understand the player has to anticipate its movement in the environment or in combat to get the most out of this latency. The magic works and everything becomes much more fluid ! Anyway, I had a blast replaying and working my way through in order to obtain my platinum trophy! This is a great game, too bad people only compares it to the Sands of Time trilogy and doesn't remember it was supposed (unoffically) to be a new starting point for the serie. I would love to see a sequel to this game but due to the lack of success we only got a DLC (only available for PS3/Xbox360) that gives a sort of ending at the game. I'm keeping this game on my shelf, there is no way I'm going to sell it away one day on purpose :)

The cel-shaded look transforms the game from drab to lush as you complete areas. The traversal of the world seems to take a page from Mirror's Edge, emphasizing a sort of fluid parkour. Environments are a lot more spacious and bright. It's a relaxing game that feels like a breath of fresh air. The main problem is that it feels a bit inconsequential and certain systems like combat feel like an afterthought. Still, a very pretty game with a pleasant vibe and a great game to test out your friend's brand new PS3.

Intense parkour tricks.

While the colorful visuals and the light tone are refreshing it falls short in other areas. Every move, every jump feels scripted as if you don't have full control over the "Prince". While the colorful visuals and the light tone are refreshing it falls short in other areas. Every move, every jump feels scripted as if you don't have full control over the "Prince". There's no way you could steer off course as the game holds your hand for the whole journey. This coupled with the fact that it's literally impossible to die makes you feel like you're playing with cheats. Fighting enemies one-on-one allows for some very cool combos, but you don't really get to experiment with this as every time you push an enemy to the edge they either fall off or a QTE triggers and your combo is interrupted. The game is basically mapped out from the very beginning and there's not much that can surprise you because you do the same thing in every area, over and over. Despite the game being one giant collect-athon, collecting those light seeds still felt kinda addicting and oddly satisfying enough to make me finish it. Also, those green plates are so cool (Breath of Ormazd).

So I liked the platforming, and I liked the companion, and I wasn't bothered by her being the magic reason you cannot die. I played for a few hours and unlocked about half the areas and collected a lot of light balls and then was faced with another few hours of doing the same thing over and over. Which, sure, describes many games, but this one doesn't hide it well and doesn't really give you much else to think about.

I might go back to it eventually but I need a long break. 3 stars because the platforming really was well done and fun for awhile.
