Bullet Point Review

PROS

  • Long, ambitious, and full of ideas
  • Navigating through the environments and solving puzzles is generally enjoyable
  • Solid art direction
  • Story mostly retains that classic Oddworld charm

CONS

  • Poor controls make precise movements all but impossible (wtf is that floaty-ass double jump doing in an Abe game??)
  • Bogged down with unnecessary systems like looting/crafting
  • Level design pales in comparison to the PS1 originals, the more linear approach here really hurts the feel of exploration
  • Getting through most enemy encounters is slow, tedious, and beset by trial-and-error

Trying to finish this up before the year ends so I can include it in my year end wrap up but boy is it real tough at the end. This game is great but it's FAR tougher than the others ever were.

This is everything I could've hoped for. I hope they continue making more games. Oddworld is, if anything, even more relevant today in its satire than it was when it originally came out, and we desperately need it in these trying times.

I've waited so long for this day. Munch's Oddysee was the last new game in the franchise I played, and since then I've waited patiently, and now it's here.

unplayable. design flaws and bugs keep getting me stuck in places and forcing me to restart levels. got frustrated and gave up, despite really wanting to finish it

Poor controls and a wildly uneven difficulty, even on Easy. Got to the crane level near the end and gave up. Did no one play test this game?

Just beat the second level. Man, this game controls just as shitty as the rest of the games in the series, and I've gotta say - it's pretty tedious! I've had to re-play several sections because the controls just feel that sloppy.

It's also weirdly inconsistent. For instance, why can I only sometimes tie up the bad guys? If I knock one unconscious, it lets me pickpocket them, but it's not always possible to tie them up. I just don't get why I can't tie up in this certain situation, and it requires so much waiting and trial and error before the enemy movement syncs up in such a way that I can pass by.

Kiiind of frustrating. I'm pressing onward because the game was free with my PS+ subscription. Which thank god for that, had I spent full price on this, I would have gotten pretty annoyed already.

This kind of thing doesn't bother me really, as I don't care about graphics, but it looks nowhere near as nice as it did in the ads.

There is such a thing as too many intro cinematics. It was just too many mysterious things presented all at once without any insight into why I should care about them.

I have fond memories of playing Abe's Odyssey at my friend's house with his Matrox video card. I never really delved much into the rest of the series, but I suppose this is a good time to re-invest in some Oddworld.

One of my most looked-forward to game this year. I adore the Oddworld universe, it's so bizarre (one might even say.... odd) and funny, and yet even on PS1-era graphics they somehow captured such a unique vibe around the characters.

I am probably alone in this camp but my favorite one so far has probably been Munch's Odyssey, but I had a lot of fun (despite never finishing) New n' Tasty and Stranger's Wrath. It's really amazing how they managed to make excellent games, all with completely different gameplay styles. Says a lot about the talents of the development team as well as the creativity of Lorne Lanning, the man behind the series.

Unfortunately the release date coincided with a family tragedy so I haven't had much time to play this yet, but I just scraped through the first level before work and I can already tell this is going to be a favorite of mine this year. Definitely check this one out if you have PS+!

My life is garbage but at least the new Oddworld title has a release date. Course I won't be able to play it til it drops dramatically in price a few years from now, but at least it'll make me happy to know new Oddworld exists in this horrible existence of ours.
