Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (2013)

The best spin-off ever for Far Cry, and in principle one of the best spin-offs in the history of gamedev ever!

The gameplay base was already good (because it is Far Cry 3, lol), but this game is loved for its aesthetics and plot, and OH MY GOD, THAT'S ONE IS TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL!

The plot copies all the main cliches of 'muscular' films from the 80s, elevating them to the absolute.

Every phrase here will be said seriously and therefore it will be even more funny! The voice acting in Russian is terrible, as if the actors were paid for it with a can of beer, which only makes the game better!

We need more games, like this one, from big companies!

When I first started this, I was like: "Why did they even make this, they should have released a mission pack for FC3 instead". After a few hours though, I had to admit, the game has it's charm. It's a really strange, neon filled 80's charm, but it's still there. Although the game is pretty much a parody and love letter to the 80's culture with forced nonsense jokes, a plot that doesn't matter much and neon dragons, I still had some good time with it.

I liked the side mission where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles's tried to murder me, or the Mortal Kombat reference before the big challange. The final laser weapon is really OP and yet you feel like you deserve it in a world like this. The bait system is a good addition and killing a Dragon is always satisfying. Other than that, it's basically a reskinned Far Cry 3, so gameplay wise don't expect big changes. It's not a long game at all, so you can finish it before you get bored of the dark atmosphere and return to a more colorful Far Cry game after you are done with Rex Power Colt's adventures.

Basically re-skinned FC3, mechanically the game adds nothing of note to the genre.

But, everything - music, dialogue, color schemes, names, cutscenes, color palettes - is a tropey romp that is worth playing through. Plenty of referential humor not only to the pop culture genre but also to FPS in general and Far Cry games in particular.

I've rarely been so entertained by a game that wasn't trying to impress me.

In the beginning, I was not quite sure about playing it because I am not into Far Cry games, but I got this game for free and after seeing some videos I decided to give it a chance... and the game is so fun!

It is like playing an 80's cyberpunk movie. The game wants to make you laugh being absolutely crazy and not making sense. And I was playing, laughing about the crazy situations, conversations, battles...

It may be not the best shooter, but it is fun. So fun.

A stand alone re-skinning of the Far Cry 3 set in an absurd 80s action movie universe of the future.

The game's fun but it's essentially a Far Cry 3 game. All the mechanics are pretty much the same although limited to a much shorter game - and that's absolutely a good thing. The enemies are re-skinned enemy archetypes from the Far Cry 3 - the heavy class gunmen, the runners - same thing. Weapons although skinned for the future are pretty much the same deal.

The story is completely over the top, funny and nonsensical. I chuckled quite a few times during the cut scenes or during dialogs. Really cool stuff if you've got a bit of nostalgia for the great classics of the old.

The world is dark, full of neons and bright lights in the dark. It seems cool but I've got pretty tired of it soon and missed the Far Cry's 3 blue skies and green grass.

Overall a nice game for a couple of hours but would not pick it up over originall Far Cry 3.

Let's get right down to it: this is a re-skinned, lower-budget Far Cry 3. Normally, a reductionist description like that would bear negative connotations, but Far Cry 3 had great mechanics, and this fresh coat of paint is fucking radical.

And yeah, the entire game is an homage to the fiction of the 1980s (and a little from the early '90s). Everything from Predator to Airplane to Karate Kid. Honestly, I'm a child of the 90s. I only watched Top Gun because I stayed home sick one day and was too tired to turn off TBS. That said, most the references aren't that obscure. If you've watched pop-tv for an extended amount of time (South Park, Simpsons, Robot Chicken, etc.) you'll be fine.

The music is a hilarious synth-pop and distorted guitar mess, and the main character's increasingly ridiculous one-liners are funny for the most part. My favorite is "This little piggie is off to the morgue..." which Sergeant Rex Power-Colt says with sort of an awkward, self-satisfied mumble. What the Fuck?

The graphics are all about the contrast of dark green and neon. As far as presentation goes, my only issue was with the 2d, comic-style cutscenes, which don't look great, and have me thinking the game went over its modest budget, and fell short of the creator's aspirations.

I played on the PS3 and it ran without a hitch. It was a blast, and I even went in after the final mission to find all the collectibles.
