With my unemployment ending next week, I found myself obsessively saving humanity again.

My original intention was to play xcom 2 but I somehow changed gears early on and dove into the unplayed Xcom: Enemy Within expansion. I beat it today, on normal difficulty, save scumming like a cretin from start to finish.

The pace, challenge and discovery holds up. Although to my surprise, the fidelity is dated with noticeable clunk, especially when compared to the sequel.

Cultural nuance is not as sharp compared to modern standards either. Having medics approach and heal a female soldier only to be told to "man up" is aggressively out of place. It was also a head turn see the entire xcom base team to be men, aside from the head scientist. Whose stern demeanour is likely caused, in scientific terms, from being sick of their shit.

The sequel will now grab my attention again, as I look forward to a more tested run. I can't promise to leave save scumming behind, but I'll try.
