Pro Tip: Play this on PC, and add a bunch of QoL mods. Number 1 being ProperSave. With runs lasting 50+ minutes, there really needs to be an option to quit & save your progress mid-run just in case you have to leave prematurely.

There are also a ton of other quality mods that add items, levels, additional difficulties, and survivors. This game easily becomes a masterpiece with the addition of these mods.

Seems pretty neat, but really feels like a mistake to play single player. This screams the need for a group of friends who all want to play Risk of Rain 2 together.

I get it, all I post these days are about this specific game. But its a bit of an issue if it makes sense, the way I want to leave this game and complete the rest my backlog, but at the same time I want to return and beat the other challenges in this game, despite me being exhausted every time I return back to it. Does anyone know how to get out of this kind of situation, and if so, can tell me how?

Recently, I've decided to let this game go. I felt as if I was always looking for an excuse to play this game longer, such as playing the new game plus mode or beating the secret final boss, but eventually, it became a slog. Maybe I remember my past experiences on it while playing, but they no longer align with the love-hate relationship I have with this game, in the way I continue to play it despite the tedious experience of attempting to bring back memories that have long since been gone . I've wanted to play other games and move on, but the comfort eventually caved in, and I continued to try and enjoy what I once had with it until now. To let it go and enjoy the good experiences I have had with it is something I wanted to do after I finally managed to delete it, but I cant help but think: Could I have had more?

I know this wasn't really a review of the game, but it was something I needed to get off my chest, probably in the hope that by sharing this block of text, I can leave the memories behind and create new ones. I hope you understand, and if anyone else has experienced something similar to this, what was it and how did you overcome it? If you didn't, I would be interested in knowing what you couldn't overcome, as it would give some comfort knowing that in answering either question, I would know that I'm not the only person going through this.

I wonder if the first run in this game is "rigged" somehow in your favor, or if I just got really lucky. I made it all the way to phase 3 of the final boss before getting exploded to death, but most of my runs since have struggled to last longer than 5-10 mins. Luckily the game is really fun …

I made it all the way to phase 3 of the final boss before getting exploded to death, but most of my runs since have struggled to last longer than 5-10 mins. Luckily the game is really fun so I am willing to take the time to learn it and power through.

I shelved this game for months after an hour of playtime. I just never got the praise of Risk of Rain 2 despite enjoying a bunch of rogue games. It's just that the maps feel so open and the movement was slow that it felt like a chore finding the teleporter.

This time, there were 3 things that made me more invested:

  1. I'm an idiot and learned of the sprint button. So moving around felt a lot less slow. Adding onto the items that make me faster made the runs move at a faster pace.

  2. The one word I would describe Risk of Rain 2: exaggerated. "You don't try to photograph the reality, you try to photograph the photograph of the reality." Getting duplicates doesn't increase damage, which would make them boring. Since items are so common, it's easy to get duplicates. My best runs never depended on getting the best items in the game, they were getting duplicates of the most common items since the chances of effect were so high. Enemies were taking massive damage in an instant, chances of explosions were always high, one or a few pellets from my shotgun always dealt critical damage per shot. This makes the combat exaggerated to such a degree that it makes it one of the most chaotic games I have ever played.

  3. The new character, the Bandit, is fun as fuck.

I would argue that this is a strong contender for one of the most solidly designed roguelike games out there. It's so incredibly addicting. I've beaten the game time after time and it still doesn't get old.

Finished 2 player run on Rainstorm difficulty on 2021.02.16. Need to get better accustomed to Rainstorm and move on to Monsoon.

Been playing this with a friend lately, and wow the gameplay loop is addicting. I have had a couple problems with compatibility and getting it to run properly, but I acknowledge that it's in very early-access. I'm excited to see what more they add to this.
