Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is the second game in the Crash Bandicoot series, and the sequel to the original game. The gameplay is largely similar to that of the original, as players make their way through a limited environment whilst breaking crates that contains bonuses. The goal of the game is to gather 25 crystals for Crash's nemesis, Doctor Neo Cortex. The crystals are scattered between 25 different levels accessible via Warp Rooms, which are hub areas of the game. A level is cleared by collecting its respective crystal and reaching the end of its path, which returns Crash to the Warp Room. Read less

This is a polished and highly enjoyable sequel that improves on the original in nearly every way, it introduces tighter controls, smoother animations, and more varied level design. The hub-based level structure offers non-linear progression, and new moves like the slide and belly flop add depth to the gameplay. While still challenging, it feels more fair and refined than its predecessor. With its vibrant visuals, catchy soundtrack, and iconic platforming, it stands out as one of the best 3D platformers of its era.

This title is when Crash reached it's sweet spot, feeling way less clunky and slow compared to the first title, not to mention the levels are way more varied, this helps a lot by mixing the challenge so it prevents the game from becoming repetitive. The main selling point for me is the new dash mechanic, which was very much a needed feature in the first title, not just to make the platforming more fun, but also to make it less punishing, since the first game is, in my opinion, unbalanced.

Another stands out is how the game experiments with perspective and pacing, by mixing traditional stages with side-scrolling sections, chase levels, and vehicle gameplay like riding the polar bear, it constantly shifts how you engage with the mechanics. These changes feel meaningful rather than gimmicky, helping to showcase the controls while keeping the experience fresh. It’s clear how much the developers matured into a much stronger grasp on how to design levels for 3D movement this time around, resulting in challenges that feel way less frustrating than the very first Crash entry.

The addition of secrets, hidden warp rooms, and optional gem requirements also gives the game a strong replay value. Completionists are rewarded for mastering levels and paying attention to environmental clues, without the process feeling excessively punishing. Combined with its humorous tone, expressive animations, and memorable boss fights, it creates a well-rounded experience that remains enjoyable even for today's standards. This sequel not only fixed the flaws of the original but also helped define what great 3D platforming should feel like on the titles of its era.

Still very good despite the three stars, but way shorter than the first Crash and less challenging, even if you're trying to 100% it. Still very good despite the three stars, but way shorter than the first Crash and less challenging, even if you're trying to 100% it. The controls are massively improved compared to the first one, but I found the levels more repetitive even though the areas for the levels change more often. In the first one, you're always in the jungle, but the level design varies more. In this second game, it was more like doing the same few levels except in different areas. The bosses are also ridiculously easy, I was expecting a bit more of a challenge for the last one especially. It's still loads of fun and there were still plenty of moments where I had to die and retry (I know my review is making it sound like I'm like "this game is SO easy", but I mostly mean in comparison to the first one). At least, there were less deaths caused by the frustrating controls.

Crash's "Crushing" adventure.

I can say that this game is a complete 180 from the Original. The Difficulty is completely balanced, and the Replay value is very High.

I can also say that I might Love the level design in This game, while I prefer Warped's level design, I learned to admire this game's level design.

I can say that this game is a complete 180 from the Original. The Difficulty is completely balanced, and the Replay value is very High.

I can also say that I might Love the level design in This game, while I prefer Warped's level design, I learned to admire this game's level design.

The Gameplay is also fixed in this one, and you can Actually control crash very well. Adding on top of what's said, the new moves that were introduced, made Crash more unique and distinct from other Platformer, I loved the Slide Jump and Body slam movement.

Crash 2's Stories are simple and barely effect the gameplay, but they added some Neat stuff in the game to make the story feel important as the game goes on.

It's not a Perfect game, but it's far better than it's predecessor. In just One year they managed to fix almost every problem the first game had, Added new abilities, New level design, a somewhat progressing story, They managed to pull a great product, a good game and Decent Platformer.

Crash 2

Platform carino, che migliora quanto fatto con l'originale. Riduce la difficoltà eccessiva, anche se la raccolta di casse è problematica. Bella la possibilità di scelta del livello dall'hub principale. Voto: 7.8/10

Fantastic game, but going for 100% means you have to do some absurdly difficult tasks that can just get ridiculous.

While Crash 3: Warped was quite amazing, this still remains the best Crash in my mind. The extra gems, secret areas and varied levels were amazing.
