As a long-time fan of the Batman universe, I was excited to dive into "Gotham Knights". The game's premise of bringing back beloved sidekicks like Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin immediately piqued my interest. The narrative following the aftermath of Batman's death offered a unique perspective that I was eager to explore. Here is a few things I fell are important to know about the game.
In conclusion, "Gotham Knights" is a solid title for fans of the Batman universe, particularly those who appreciate the inclusion of the iconic sidekicks. The engaging story and updated graphics made for an enjoyable experience, even if the game may not have high replayability for me personally.
Recommendation: If you, like me, have fond memories of the previous Batman games and are interested in exploring the Bat-Family's journey, I would definitely recommend giving "Gotham Knights" a try. It's a worthwhile experience, even if it may not become a long-term obsession.

When Gotham Knights was released, I wasn’t sure what type of game it was. It seemed like it was another live service, always online game with predatory practices in the vein of Marvel’s Avengers. After seeing a few reviews on it, I realized it wasn’t as annoying as the Avengers game and I added it to my list of games to get when I got a PS5. Well, now I have a PS5.

While Gotham Knights isn’t developed by Rocksteady and doesn’t have Arkham in the title, it is hard to not think about that wildly successful series of games when booting this up. As I played through Gotham Knights, I had this odd feeling. There’re some obvious inspirations from the Arkham series in the gameplay, but it didn’t feel like it was trying to mimic an Arkham game, like PS3’s Captain America or Insomniac’s Spider-Man. Gotham Knights felt very much like its own beast. Which is probably for the best as being too derivate of the Arkham series would just lead to unflattering comparisons.

So, what is the gameplay like? Imagine mixing some of the Arkham gameplay with some arcade beat’em up gameplay. That’s Gotham Knights. Instead of the rhythmic combat of Arkham, you have a melee and ranged attack and special super moves you unlock throughout the game. Instead of countering, you dodge out of the way of attacks to set up counterattacks. It’s maybe not as elegant a system, but it’s still fun. The Arkham games were stealth games first and new enemies that were introduced usually added some challenge to your stealth ability. The new enemies introduced in Knights present new combat challenges, whether it’s the agile enemy that can dodge attacks or the heavy enemy with a shield. There are still a fair number of areas where you can play Knights like an Arkham game, zipping around the rafters to drop down on enemies, but if you are expecting this to be more Arkham, you’ll be disappointed. More often than not, you find yourself trading punches with baddies. There’s also a fair number of puzzles in the game. These take form as either investigating a crime scene or solving an Indiana Jones style hidden temple puzzle.

As for the predatory parts of the game I was worried about, they aren’t really there. There’s no ludicrously expensive micro-transaction store selling cosmetics and powerups, the game is paced well where I didn't’ feel I needed to grind repetitive missions over and over, enemies aren’t overly spongy if they are one level above you. There is an action RPG element where you have to craft new gear to keep up with the baddies, but the resources for those items were never annoyingly scarce. Trying to unlock all the suit colors is more challenging than it should be though. The only time I really felt like the game was being purposefully obtuse was during the boss fights. I think those were all built with the co-op system in mind. They’re all a little too spongy and they constantly attack with very small, if any, windows of opportunity to fight back. I think I was meant to have a co-op partner draw the villain’s attention while I landed a few hits. A lot of the bosses also do everyone’s favorite move, call in henchmen to back them up. Of all the fights, I found Harley & Clayface to be the most fair, at least could beat them in one or two tries. The worst offenders were Mr. Freeze and Talia Al Ghul. Both fights with Freeze had me swearing at the TV. He’s super tanky and has a lot of high damaging, far reaching attacks. Talia isn’t as tanky, but she constantly attacks, doesn’t stun easily, and teleports around. In her second stage, it felt almost impossible to dodge her attacks. I found it was best to keep my distance from her and use batarangs before trying to get in close.

For traversing the city, you have access to the Batcycle. It’s the best way around at first, but I didn’t use it much after I unlocked Batgirl’s glide ability. I always enjoyed gliding around in the Arkham games, so I was eager to do that here. It felt weird to be riding around at street level on a motorcycle. It was a little too pedestrian for a superhero. I preferred to stick to the rooftops. Like Arkham Knight, Gotham Knight gives you all of Gotham City to explore. It’s a decent size and there’s lots of back alleys to explore and landmarks to visit, like Wayne Tower, the Iceberg Lounge, etc. There's lots of little lore bits that reference obscure DC comics. This Gotham reminds me of the 90s Batman films. While still dark and moody, there’s a lot of pops of colors, with every skyscraper seeming to radiate colored fog. And there’s still civilians on the streets, it’s not like Arkham Knight where they quarantined the city off. If you walk around, they’ll greet you or comment on vigilantes.

The biggest shakeup this game offers is you can play as one of four members of the Bat family: Red Hood, Robin, Nightwing, and Batgirl. Much like the Avengers game, each hero has the same basic move set as their foundation and through the upgrade tree you find out what skill each hero specializes in. Nightwing is about mobility and taking on groups of enemies, Red Hood is about ranged attacks, Robin is built for stealth, and Batgirl is tech savvy and good at one v one fights. I often played as Batgirl, partly because of her gliding ability, partly because she kinda looks like Emma Stone, in the default suit at least. That was one thing I chaffed against, there’s several different style of suits and as you upgrade gear you may end up with a ‘Year One’ style suit or a ‘Titans’ style suit. As someone who is fashion over function when it comes to equipping my game characters, I purposefully used a subpar suit because I liked its style more than the others. There’s a ‘transmog’ option to make suits look like other suits, but you can’t customize a ‘transmogged’ suit, which I feel that defeats the purpose. Other games have figured this out and I’m a little disappointed in Gotham Knights for not.

While Star Wars fans have a reputation of being... rabid, I think Batman fans can be just as bad. I bring that up because this game starts with Batman dying and I remember that getting some flak online from the ‘Batman can never be caught unprepared or bested” crowd. I think that mindset handicaps the stories you can tell with a character and his universe. I am game with Batman dying and seeing how that plays out. And I think they handled the death of Batman pretty well. He dies while fighting Ra’s Al Ghul, one of the few villains who can match Batman punch for punch, in the Batcave. After Batman starts to lose the fight, he sacrifices himself by bringing down the whole Batcave onto him and Ra’s. And I half expected the game to have Batman fall down a hole or somehow ‘die’ off screen to leave them a slim chance he didn’t actually die. Props though, they don’t. You see them find his body and bury him. Barbara, Tim, Dick, and Jason all meet at the funeral and it seems like this is the first time they’ve been together in a while. They band together to complete the case Bruce was working on when he died, the death of Dr. Langstrom. After a few nights of investigating, Talia Al Ghul is back in town and she cremates Ra’s as revenge for being banished from the League, the Bat Family learns about the Court of Owls, a secret society of Gotham elites that ‘guide the city with an unseen hand’ and they have a love for death traps, and the League of Shadows declares war on the Court.

This game was my formal introduction to the Court of Owls. I knew they were a newer Batman villain that quickly cemented themselves into the Batman lore, but I hadn’t read any of the comics featuring them. They are good villains for this story. With Batman dead, there’s a power void in who will be the next ‘protector of Gotham’. The Owls have been around for centuries, but now is their time to accelerate their plans unless the Bat Family steps up to be the new protectors. The Court aren’t mobsters or thugs, their business moguls by day and believe they are what’s best for Gotham. We get some other lore dropped as we play through the game, Commissioner Gordon was killed a few years ago, the Joker is dead, and under the new Commissioner, the police force is hostile to the Bat Family. In a smart move, a lot of the villains with direct ties to Batman don’t show up here, like the Joker, Catwoman, or Two-Face. Instead, we get Harley, Freeze, and Clayface as supporting villains and Penguin as an uneasy ally.

The game is broken down into nights. Each night you have a main mission to complete, but you’re also completing side missions, stopping street crimes, and exploring Gotham. It nails the feeling of Batman simulator. Some nights are full of big story moments, some nights you’re beating up thugs to get information. You see what night you’re on when you return to your HQ, and it helps that feeling just seeing how things unravel as the days go by. It’s not like the Arkham game where everything goes to pot in one night, it’s a slow burn as the Court enacts their plans. The street crimes can feel a bit tedious, but that’s also how Batgirl feels about stopping the 12th mugger tonight. Even the supporting villains’ missions have a very workman vibe to them. Freeze is just trying to bath the world in ice, the most basic of Freeze plots that he probably tries every Thursday. Harley just becomes Gweneth Paltrow.

Spoilers ahead. The third act kinda fumbles the ball. After spending the game learning about the Court of Owls and tracking them down, you assault their headquarters and capture their leader. As you walk him out to the cop car, Talia kills him and reveals she’s been in charge of the League the whole time. She developed Man Bats with Langstrom because... I forget why. The Court of Owls quickly fall into the background, and I know they’ve been setting up all this stuff with the League throughout the game, but I don’t think the payoff is worth it. It leaves the Court of Owls plotline falling just short of the finish line. In the end, we find Talia has been using a Lazarus Pit under the Batcave to resurrect Bruce. I wasn’t too surprised by that; death is often a temporary inconvenience in comics, and this game wanted it’s emotionally charged fight. What I do think undercuts the whole game’s theme is, after you beat Bruce and Talia, the Court of Owls shows up in force. During this time Bruce has climbed into a half-destroyed Batwing. He tells you to flee as he flies the jet into the Lazarus Pit killing all the Court of Owl soldiers present and sacrificing himself again. After spending this whole game where one of the themes was the heroes proving to themselves that they are good enough to be the new protectors of Gotham, the new ‘Batman’, they still needed Batman to save them in the final climax. I think the want for a cool “Bruce sacrifices himself” scene won out over validation of character development.

The four heroes all have their distinct personalities and personal issues they’re working through. Playing as Batgirl I don’t know how much the cutscenes change for other the other heroes, but she’s got a Spider-Man vibe going, a bit of a wisecracker. A stark contrast to the stern, serious Batman. When they all interact with each other at their headquarters, the Belfry, you get that feeling that they get along but haven’t formed a solid team identity yet. The writing can also have some corny moments. There were a couple instances when talking about disabilities or falling for scams or Emails about attending a pride parade that the writing felt very “Saturday Morning Learning Pals”, just a bit too hammy. Towards the end of the game the heroes reveal their secret identity and HQ to their police force contact, which seemed a bit odd, given how protective Batman was of his identity and since most of the police force considers the heroes vigilantes.

While I don’t know the side stories of the other characters, I do think Batgirl felt the most relevant to the story. She is dealing with the death of both Bruce and her father. The latter manifesting in her memory failing and not remembering what her father's face looked like. There’s also the fact that, in this universe, Barbara was still Oracle before taking up the mantle of Batgirl again. Now that she’s back on the streets, she’s not able to keep up on intel as much. I think it mentions in her bio she had some physical therapy to help rehabilitate her and it looks like she wears some type of back brace with her civilian clothes. One of the moments that really stuck out to me in her story was after a very tough fight, she is drug back to the Belfry and patched up by Alfred. When she wakes up on the couch, in a panic, her first question is “Can I...” before Alfred assures her that her back is bruised but not broken. It shows how much that looms in her mind and I just thought it was a very human moment.

All in all, I enjoyed Gotham Knights, except when it frustrated me. While stealth was still an option in this game, I knew not to expect another Arkham. The predatory practices weren’t as bad as I was worried about. I liked the shakeup to the world of Batman, seeing the new heroes step up, the new interpretations of old villains. Even with the secret societies, this game felt more grounded than the Arkham games, no gas clouds or prison cities. I didn’t get a chance to experience the co-op, but I may go back to try some of that. If you enjoy the Batman world and messing with the formula, are a fan of any of the four playable heroes, or like a good superhero punch’em up, I can recommend this game, and it’s not terribly expensive anymore.

It's way better than most adaptations of comic book properties to video games I've played. I had fun playing Gotham Knights. It's a fine open world superhero game that doesn't ask much of the player: I enjoyed most of it with SGDQ playing on a second screen. It isn't as good as Arkham or Spidey, but if you find a deal and you set realistic expectations going in, you can have a good time.

C'est dans ce genre de moment que je voudrais vraiment avoir les demi-étoiles sur ce site car le jeu vaut un beau 3,5 sur 5. Ouais 14/20 me parait une note juste.
Ca aurait rendu l'open world plus organique.
Est-ce que ca aurait mérité un game of the year ? Non. Est-ce que c'est un bon jeu d'action pas prise de tête avec des persos attachants ? Ouais ! Il est perpétuellement soldé, jouez y et faites vous votre idée !

The combat system is more reminiscent of a typical beat-em-up game, similar to how the Assassin Creed series of games is now, compared to Arkham's flow combat system.
The story is rather short but there are side quests storylines to compensate for it. However, I felt that the story was too shallow, and having 4 main characters also meant that the already short story run-time had even less time to flesh out the details for each of the 4 characters. Hence, the story failed to be gripping, and instead, felt like just another side quest you could do with any of the characters you liked, as if it had no personal implications to them.
The gameplay can get rather repetitive as you would just be flying around the open world and resolving crimes. However, the game alleviates this by offering a plethora of different types of crimes to resolve (although most still involve you smashing in criminal faces). Having 4 different characters also mean different gameplay styles and abilities, which can help refresh the gameplay loop. Heroic Assualt though... is just horrible and extremely repetitive.
Overall, I felt that for a comic based game, the story could have been more fleshed out, given the wealth of story material available out there. The gameplay and combat is fun, and having 4 different heroes helps keep the gameplay grind interesting for longer. All things considered, it's a average game you can have some fun with on the side.

I’m glad I jumped in because I found this game to be a simplified spiritual successor to the open world styles gameplay and story telling of those Arkham games. In fact, more than once my brain fired off a message to me ‘this is like Fallout 4, to Arkham’s Fallout 3’. I wasn’t blown away by this game the same way I was with those initial games - it’s hard not to use them as a touchstone - but Gotham Knights is the perfect level of turn your brain off frictionless pretty action game that has a fair amount to love if you’re a Batman fan.

Its really clear that the combat, exploration and narrative are inspired byt the previous Rocksteady and WB Games Montreal games. Sadly, the combat is not as satisfying, the exploration is not as fun and you feel like you're controlling an incomplete Batman, no matter what character you choose. the Batcycle is even worst than the batmobile of the previous title.
You can read my full review in spanish here.
The issue is, I still had fun with this game. Not a lot and there were moments it made me wish I were playing Arkham City instead. But its not all bad. The Photo mode is great and most character designs (except for Jason Todd) are amazing.

My conclusion is that you can have fun with this game, but it will get old soon. It's worth a look if you get it on Game Pass, PS Plus or something like that.
