Based on the novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, an amnesiac witcher (problem solver and slayer of monsters) whose home, the Kaer Morhen citadel, is besieged by an organization called the Salamandra, who steal their valuable potions and get away. Throughout the game, Geralt must resolve people's moral dilemmas, connect the dots of his past and track down the Salamandra.

Finally I really don't like Triss and it annoys me that the game assumes you have romantic feelings for her. If game designers want the main character to be romantically involved with someone and don't give the player a choice, then don't start them with amnesia and give them no reason to like or trust that person.

That sounds like a lot of faults but they are all minor and I am still really enjoying the game. The overall story is excellent and the characters are great.

For a game released in 2008, it was really really good.

Mechanics are little fiddly and hard to get used to but the game has a beautiful-driven storyline that makes all these faults unimportant.

I played this back in 2010 but I've forgotten most of it by now. After playing and loving The Witcher 2, I wanted to go back and play the first game again. So far - just started chapter 2 - I am loving it. It still looks good especially with some mods, I used most of the graphics mods on this list (https://www.kirmiziperfect.com/installing-best-mods-for-the-witcher-1-guide/) but no gameplay mods. Playing on hard is enjoyable - difficult but not frustrating and I am finding the combat a lot more fun than I remembered. The only real issue is that the same models are used for several different characters - which is a little odd. While I did enjoy the game the first time I played, I think the main problem I had was I didn't really know what to make of Geralt or how to roleplay him but now I am playing him like the Geralt in the second game - it makes it much more immersive. Overall I am enjoying it almost as much as The Witcher 2 which I plan to play again after completing the first one.

Finished the main story, some quests missed (esp. early game) and didn't do additional scenarios yet.
