The most surprising thing about Dark Souls 3 is the scale of it. It's hard to estimate, plus I haven't beaten it yet, but I would say that the game world is at least twice the size of Dark Souls or Bloodborne, including their DLCs. Possible three times as large.

They've created this gigantic, detailed world. It's like a Swiss cheese, filled with countless shortcuts, interconnections and branching paths. No loading screens or warping. And the world is totally consistent. From most areas you can climb to a vantage point and recognise all the distant structures and landmarks, often these things are so distant that they're practically on the horizon line.

For example, near the very beginning of the game you come to this vantage point (pic below). At that time I thought this was just eye candy, but all of these structures are consistent and can be visited and explored, including the forests, bridges, distant towers. And the stuff seen from here is only about 20% of the game world. You could almost call it an 'open-world' game, though it's more like a spaghetti bowl of interconnected strands and paths.

In spending a little time playing Dark Souls 3 online I've noticed a concerning trend. More than half of the other players I've encountered are doing one of two things (or both). Either they're playing the game with 3 or 4 other people and thus overwhelming all the enemies/bosses. Or they use mods/cheats so that the enemies don't fight back or so that they're invulnerable. The former category I can understand: some people like to play games with friends so, though it makes the game much easier, who am I to judge, let people play the way they want. But the huge amount of players using cheats to progress, I don't know how I feel about that. Should I be enraged, or should I just be content that they're enjoying the game in their own way? Personally I don't think the game would be enjoyable on any level if the enemies just stand there and don't fight back..

Is it just me or are the graphics in DS3 better than any game ever? Maybe I'm just out of touch because I don't play many modern games, but I've never seen anything like it before. O_o

Hopefully this screenshot doesn't count as a spoiler! I'm just so impressed by how gorgeous this game is. I think it's the most impressive game I've played on my PC. At least equal to Bloodborne (in terms of graphics) perhaps even surpassing it.
