The Prototype Before the Greatness

Grand Theft Auto III is easily my least favorite entry in the series. The game really shows that Rockstar was still experimenting with and exploring the possibilities of 3D. As a result, the open world feels very barebones, with limited shooting mechanics and stiff movement.

Grand Theft Auto III is easily my least favorite entry in the series. The game really shows that Rockstar was still experimenting with and exploring the possibilities of 3D. As a result, the open world feels very barebones, with limited shooting mechanics and stiff movement.

There’s barely a story here, and that hurts the game a lot. Claude might be the most boring protagonist in the entire GTA franchise. Even as a silent character, I’ve seen rocks with more personality — no motivations, no expressions, nothing to latch onto. While the side characters are slightly better thanks to decent voice acting, none of them are particularly memorable.

The missions are extremely repetitive, and there’s only a thin, fragile thread connecting them — if you can even call it a plot. On top of that, this game has the worst radio stations in the series: very few songs and programs, which makes them become repetitive fast.

On the positive side, the driving actually holds up pretty well and still feels fun. I also like the atmosphere and overall vibe of the game. The graphics have aged better than expected thanks to the art style, even if the entire color palette seems to be… gray. Just gray.

Ultimately, GTA III is only worth playing if you’re a fan of the series and want to see where it all started.

For context, I played the PC version using the RE3 mod, which I know made the experience significantly better than the original console versions.

As much of a classic as it gets.

The game that re-defined the open world genre. Grand Theft Auto III can show its age in many places. The game that re-defined the open world genre. Grand Theft Auto III can show its age in many places. From the clunky controls to the simplistic story and the mute protagonist, it can be hard for as modern gamer to get invested in a game like GTA III. But for me, there is just something about this game that I absolutely adore. Liberty City feels sleazy and dirty. The mission givers are all thoroughly entertaining, albeit a little shallow. The driving is zippy and fun. Fair warning, this game is very challenging and its mainly due to the clunky controls. But if you can look past all that, there is just so much groundwork laid in this game for future open world games that its legacy alone speaks for itself.

Playing this at the tender age of 8 was completely mind blowing and an experience to treasure. The countless nights with friends, tearing through the streets of Liberty City seeing how many wanted stars we could rack up and who could last the longest.... a nostalgic paradise.

Memories aside, this game was the first of its kind with its third person view in a highly interactive environment that gave players freedom to roam about the city and cause mayhem. Given a basic set of weapons that ranged from a baseball bat to a rocket launcher, oh the possibilities...

The story is one of the best in the series with its inspirations from classic mafia gangster tales as the Godfather, Goodfellas and The Sopranos, bringing Rockstar's grittiness style to life.

Overall, this is one for the ages.

An amazing blast

As old as it is, I really don't understand why people find this game outdated or why they say that it aged poorly. For me the missions weren't hard (except that one where spanked Bomberman attacked you, holy shit that for me was insane) and the controls were also great! The aim was a bit off, Claude always shooting in …

For me the missions weren't hard (except that one where spanked Bomberman attacked you, holy shit that for me was insane) and the controls were also great! The aim was a bit off, Claude always shooting in diagonal to the centre, and that Patriot and Taxi missions are just an incredible piece of shit to do, but the levels of fun I had while playing throught this game were really high. I love GTA 3

That's All, Folks.

Excellent

Grand Theft Auto 3 is an excellent game, but at some points in the game I feel like it is violent and sexual just to be violent and sexual.

I remember I was still in primary school, and every kid was talking about this satan spawn of a game. Most of our parents were super catholic strict so imagine our sheer joy when we found that one kid who's parents was kinda oblivious to the "downfall of society" claims, and allowed eight of us cramped in one tiny bedroom, each armed with our our own memory card, to finally get a taste of this forbidden fruit. At the time, mind blowing was an understatement. We wasn't quite mature enough yet to grasp the satirical and innuendo filled dialogue, but the laughter was in such ridiculous scenarios as using a prostitute to replenish health and murdering her for an instant refund and killing an entire SWAT team then jacking their tank. The amount of detail was staggering; for the first time in a game, your punishment for driving recklessly happened to be thrown through your windsheild 20 feet onto the concrete into a mist of blood. I doubt while I'm still alive, we'll ever see a game that will come close to the revolutionary impact GTAIII had on the medium.
