Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag begins in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean and ruled the land and seas. These outlaws paralyzed navies, halted international trade, and plundered vast fortunes. They threatened the power structures that ruled Europe, inspired the imaginations of millions, and left a legacy that still endures.

This is the only Assassins Creed game I’ve ever played, and I’m curious, which games are good and which ones should I play in order to fully understand this? I followed Black Flag pretty well though, so is it an anthology series? I need help.

Pros: This game delivers on the pirate experience better than any media I've ever seen. Sailing the open ocean, engaging in ship-to-ship combat, boarding enemy ships, following treasure maps to buried treasure, navigating island jungles and shanty towns, raining cannon fire from your ship and laying siege to enemy castles, cutlass and pistol combat... Everything you could want to do as a pirate, you can do. Using the classic Assassin's Creed parkour movement to climb to your ship's Crow's Nest, run across the rigging, jump across onto an enemy ship's mast, shoot the scouts there, then swing down a rope and hit the deck boots-first before you pull out your sword and start hacking away at everyone on board... I went out of my way to repeat that experience dozens of times, and it's still one of the coolest gaming moments I've ever had.

Cons: The Assassin vs. Templar war that all the previous Assassin's Creed games have had as a theme returns here, but it does not mesh well with the game's second story line (becoming rich through piracy). I found it jarring whenever the main story missions jumped from "be a pirate" to "aid the Assassins". I believe it could have meshed well, if better executed, but the studio seem to have made deliberate decisions not to do so.

Overall, a fantastic game. In the past, I had played each Assassin's Creed game within the year of release. Up until Assassin's Creed 3 that is, which I disliked so much that I stopped playing after 3 hours and didn't touch Assassin's Creed again for 8 years... I'm glad I came back to the series though, because Black Flag is fantastic. I plan to go blind into the next games in the series too, until I'm all caught up.

Holy hell. the controls are abysmal. What the hell were they thinking? Its so clunky. The running and chaining climbing is so frustrating. No don't jump, no don't drop, FFS! This is my second AC game and so far this franchise is massively overrated.

I don't care if it's not true, and also has literally no affect on anything, I am firmly believing that all of the characters in Assassin's Creed games, even like Bayek, Kassandra, and all the Chronicles characters, are all related to Desmond in some way.

I absolutely hate the approach this game took to the modern day world but I absolutely love Edward's story and character development. The thing that blows my mind is just how incredibly repetitive the main missions are. Move on, AC: evolve and adapt!

I really enjoyed the Abstergo stuff in this game. The way stories were told in the present day was done well and it was a nice twist on the previous formula.

Definitely the most lackluster AC game I've ever played. I started it four years ago and really got into it because of the music and naval battles. However, I soon got sick of it because the main character is utterly unlikeable. There's only so many times I can look past his shortcomings, and so the game went onto the bench until a few days ago. Literally the only reason I finished it is because it says AC in the title. Edward is so unlikeable it ruined the entire game. And when they decided to give him a personality in Sequence 10, that sadly was much too late. I can't sympathize with him, don't relate to his problems, and must wonder why the companions even stick around for someone like that.

Now, rant over.

All in all this is a decent game. Is it as entertaining or engaging as the other AC titles? Hardly.

Really enjoyed Edward's story, but I have a number of issues with all the other parts of the game. Particularly the parts where I was forcefully pulled out of the Animus to walk around extremely slowly listening to dialogue I do not care about that only seems like it exists to tell me I'm actually desk worker in some office. Only served to break my immersion and bring the story's momentum to a grinding halt. This isn't even mentioning all the pointless collectables and side content. Best to not have side quests than to have them simply for the sake of having them.

It felt like an Assassin's creed game but didn't at the same time. Maybe because before we played characters who were part of the Brotherhood while Kenway was a pirate with assassination's as a hobby. Nevertheless the naval combat, the shanties , the beautiful waves, added to the standard Assassin's creed experience of seeking first civilization technology.

Hard to believe this game was free for Xbox gold given how much I enjoyed it. I spent much of the game using scimitars (for high damage), wheel lock pistols (for range) and templar outfit until I unlocked the best swords, pistol and mayan outfit. My favourite way to assassinate was the berserk dart; essentially the equivalent of a one shot one kill sniper rifle. Stealth was exciting early on when I was weak, but later I preferred to just get things done as fast as possible, taking chances and fairly often getting into sword fights.

I finished 93%. Missed one shanty, one buried chest and could not care less about optional objectives for story missions. The naval combat is tons of fun, and I feel I would want to load up this game every now and then just to fight some ships. I seriously could have done without the inane hacking, collecting and deep sea diving. I do not have the DLC and have not tried multiplayer.
