I know that there are plenty of other things to do in this game, but all that I really want to do is sail around and get into ship combat. Not sure if I will even bother with the rest of the story missions.

Wow, I am still playing this. Even I am surprised. And it is complete due to the sailing. I love it. I love being a pirate. I hate going ashore (which would explain why I'm only 45% done the main story). I relish every story mission set at sea. Send me ashore and I can't wait to get back in …

That said, my opinion hasn't changed much. It is still a disappointing Assassin's Creed game, but a great arcade sailing and pirating adventure ;-)

The other night I had one experience in Black Flag that actually felt like a perfect merging of Pirate and Assassin. Sailing the Jack Daw I came across a medium size island. Anchored off the island was a Man o' War. The ship was apparently guarding the island. I slipped the Jack Daw past the ship, hugging the nearby main coastline opposite the island. Once out of the Man o' War's line of sight I weighed anchor and swam ashore the island. Skirting the tree line I made my way to the beach nearest the ship. A small sandbar lead from the beach to the ship. I got as close as I could on foot before I had to swim the remaining distance. Quietly I climbed the back of the Man o' War and began my assault. A sleeping dart took out the first crew member who may have caught a lucky glimpse of me as I climbed aboard. Another group succumb to berserk darts. This time I was caught and a full out brawl began. I made easy work of the remaining crew (despite cringeworthy AI). With nothing left to do I swam ashore, returned to the Jack Daw and brought her about and alongside the Man o' War. A simple boarding and destruction of the ship's flag made it mine. With no crew left standing, there was no one left to defend the ship nor fire its canons. Without a shot fired in retaliation the ship was mine to take.
This felt like one of the first times where Edward's Pirate life went smoothly hand-in-hand with the skills of an Assassin. The Assassin made short work of the enemy crew and the Pirate plundered the now defenceless Man o' War.

I find it interesting how much praise this game receives. So far it's not a bad game, but it is definitely plagued by some of the more frustrating aspects of Assassin's Creed. Thankfully Syndicate comes along to fix most of that. Black Flag feels cumbersome, weighed down by the worst elements of previous Assassin's Creed games (imprecise free climbing, wonky controls, annoying glitches, excessive filler, catch the floating object mini games, etc...). It also feels like a game that only physically made it to the current generation of consoles. Conceptually it does not. It mostly feels like an extension of Assassin's Creed III, minus that game's far more gracefull free climbing and running (Edward simply does not move as swiftly or elegantly in the trees as does Connor). Thankfully, the open water sections on the Jackdaw are enjoyable. This is where the game shines, and I suppose that's why it has its fans. I still have more to play so hopefully the game will endear itself to me as I progress.

Loved solving the Mayan puzzle leading to the Sage's confirmation. This game really brings the Golden Age of Piracy setting alive. It was quite tricky too, managing through stealth. The game is quite gamey in more ways than one, but that's a compromise we accept I guess.

Edward Kenway just was betrayed where I last left off in this.

Probably the last AC installment I'll ever play. And just because it's about pirates! :p
I just can't keep up with Ubisoft's releasing machine. I mean, it's great for those who love the series and are kinda exclusive to it (I'm currently playing 14 games and have another 14 queued to start), but for me, that's it.
