Got this for free on xbox gold. I put it on my wishlist after playing Black Flag, so good thing I did not buy it on steam. Rather than methodically complete each location in order of difficulty and only do story missions when I happened upon them (as I did in Black Flag), I chose to focus on story missions first and only complete the areas that were on the way. This turned out to be much more enjoyable. However, after I reached the location where you get the native armor, I went and cleared every single location, maxxed out my stuff, and did the rest of the story last.
First thing I did was buy the belgian pistols (for max range) and I used them for the entire game. I used the default starting sword for most of the game melee combat seems to be more about pressing the correct buttons rather than the stats of the sword. I later used the Spanish sword given for free from fleet missions, and finally the viking sword. I did not unlock the best sword and pistol until I was done with the game. Early on, I changed my outfit to Altair's robes; largely because a couple times I had trouble telling Shay apart from the enemies so I wanted to stand out with bright white. I then used the native armor for its defense boost but did not like the dull brown look. Spent the rest of the game in 11th century templar chainmail; that is some sweet armor.
I do not care for optional objectives, so I completely ignored them on missions. I often found myself not bothering with stealth and just massacring everyone in open combat. My preferred kill styles were in order: berserk dart, sniping with musket, pistol, open melee combat. I did all of the collectibles except some of the uncharted stuff; most of it was not particularly enjoyable though I did like exploring each area; especially the native pillar areas. Lastly, I got to visit where I live and my home town in this game (St. John's and Lewisporte in Newfoundland). Both places do not look anything like they do in real life (geographically speaking). Lewisporte did not even exist during the time of this game and the person for which the town is named was not alive yet. Haha, I wonder if the developers just look at a map and said "yeah lets use that". Furthermore, I am confused about the icy land mass visible from the harbor of St. John's because there is nothing but open water to the east of St. Johns. It is supposed to be Greenland?
