The content scale of the AC title is on such a large magnitude that I am rather daunted to write an elaborate opinion about, much like with Origins and Valhalla. But suffice to say, I enjoyed this one the most out of these three games. Much as the immersive world build replicate Egypt and England, respectively, Odyssey blesses players like me to have a phantom familiarity with the landscape, cities and landmarks of the Classical period Greece.

Taking place during the Peloponnesian (and some flashes into the Greco-Persian) wars, Odyssey has its abundance in story-telling by AC standards, augmented further by two DLC's and hundreds of minor quests scattered across the realms. One glaring issue is that I couldn't care less about the randomly generated missions that has no effect on the story nor tells anything significant, rather serving as an excuse to grind for higher levels and rewards. One Ubisoft-related problem with modern games like Assassin's Creed franchise is the bloat that gives at most little substance for the time you put into exploring, questing and grinding. But if you're the kind to invest your time and enjoy sticking around to take in the Animus world immersion, then it's less of a problem for you.

In the end, Odyssey has arguably provided the best experience in the modern AC trilogy, being consistent with historical world build and well-written characters (Kassandra FTW) and also faring fairly with combat and stealth gameplay amped with new ability variations.

Графонисто!

Пожалуй самая красивая игра в серии. Мир огромен, история в меру интересная. DLC тоже не подкачали. Но, красивая не значит лучшая, а хорошая история это, мягко говоря не повод заниматься игрой около 220 часов.

Even though I've played like 60 hours of this game, thinking back on my time I cannot say that I actually enjoyed any of them.

Well, that's not technically true. The start of the game is not super bad, although being low level and just starting to understand the game, the damage-spongyness of the enemies was more unbearable. Also, there's a neat little side quest with some resistance warriors that was pretty cool.

But everything else is basically bad. The story is bad; It's terminally unfocused and with no stakes. The characters are bad; I liked Kassandra at the beginning but she had no arc nor any coherent motivations. The gameplay is bad; stealth is a joke, the enemies have too much health, which forced me to min-max the hell out of my character and there's too much inventory management, made worse by my previous complain. The sandbox is bad; it looks nice but there's no variety, every island looks almost the same.

The only reason I played so many hours is because everything is just competent enough to make for a good podcast game. The repetitiveness of the missions and the dullness of the dialogue makes for a good mind cleanse to give me something to do with my eyes and hands while listening to something I actually enjoy.

I thought I wasn't going to play a single second more of this game but lately nothing numbs the brain like it. I can go around this toy Greece mechanically looting and killing while listening to a podcast and not think about anything for like 2 hours straight.

Wait, Kassandra's father says that he and her mother were "part of a family" and they had to "continue the bloodline"? I have to admit that I didn't expect the eugenic inbreeding 5th act twist.

This game is a masterpiece! I love Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman history, so it was a delight for my eyes to see all the buildings, the atmosphere, the spoken Greek, the ship's songs, etc. The story is very interesting and the presence of some ancient people is an amazing thing too (I have played this game after reading the books of Herodotus). The Battle of Thermopylae was a great event and it was very delightful to see it being explored by the plot.

The open world trying to recreate part of Hellas was very rich, beautiful, colorful and full of life. The world is so beautiful that many times I felt that desire just to stop e observe the nature, for the good feeling it was bringing to me. The sea is fantastic! One can dive and see even fish and other wonders underwater. There are some shipwrecks undersea and one can find treasures and other contents.

  • Stealth absolutely sucks. For a game called "assassin's creed" assassination is as barebones as it can be. You can't really distract guards or move it around and they mostly stay still so you don't even get to memorise patrol patterns. And even if some NPC explicitly tells you to be sneaky, you don't actually need to. Essentially this is Brawler's Creed and the sooner you get that, the sooner you can start having fun and not re-loading your save ever time the finnicky "assassinate" prompt disappears just as you try to press it.

I have been a huge fan of the franchise since the first game, despite it evolving beyond what it used to be. I honestly enjoyed Origins and wished for a more polished sequel in the new open-world style the AC team has been working with.

However, I just did not connect with this bloated game at all. I played it for a lot of hours, more than I should have, but never did it bring me any joy. I just see a Ubisoft map nowadays and grow tired and bored already. I think this game especially really wore me down from these types of games.

Open worlds are cool but when the world itself is very soulless and repetitive, it makes it more of a chore than an adventure especially when it's one this massive. The leveling system and enemy types were also dull and after a while, I just didn't care at all. It is also not an "assassin" game at all, just your run-of-the-mill fighter RPG with occasional assassination situations.

I will say that the fighting was fun, especially with the abilities and active skills. The game also looks good, could it have been better? Yeah, but it is a massive world so the environments are not that bad looking with that in mind. Yet, this is probably my last Assassin Creed. I am just not a fan of the franchise anymore, especially when there are so many open-world games out nowadays that are doing it much better.

When you make the last dialogue choice when first talking to the wolf, Kassandra, who had been rather composed until then, just goes nuts. The change does not feel natural to me, at all - note I am not referring to her feelings, but to the aforementioned transition.

Further, while I recognize that describing a dialogue choice with just a couple of words can only be difficult, this game seems to me to have less success at it than other games.

  • The world feels lived in. There's amazing attention to historic detail and you can really feel like you are in Ancient Greece.
  • In that vein, the game is simply beautifully designed. I couldn't help but stop and photo mode constantly.
  • The main story to me was very engaging. I like family stories and I believe the twist and turns were well done as well as the consequences.
  • Kassandra is a wonderful protagonist. She's witty, opinionated and reactive. She rarely felt static and you can really believe that some people really see her as this elevated figure.
  • Most of the characters you meet and travel with are a delight. They really feel like they become Kassandra's friends throughout the story.
  • The game is simply hilarious when it wants to. Kassandra's sarcastic and nonchalant attitude serves to deliver some very comedic scenes. I still think back to some quests and chuckle.

What I didn't like

  • The game drags on too long. Like I said the story of the main quest is good but I'm not a fan of some of the ways it was executed. At times it felt like I was doing pointless tasks so I can get from A to B.
  • Lack of memorable side quests. There were some of course but compared to games like The Witcher 3, most of them just felt pointless and didn't really make me care.
  • The world is just too big. At some point exploration due to curiosity ends and just going to place for a quest begins. And a lot of these places were not even relevant to any quests.
  • This problem is even bigger in the Atlantis DLC. The Elysium part had me running around, killing random enemies to weaken realms. This could work in theory but here it was just tedious.
  • Not much of Assassins in the whole thing. The modern day story was ofc connected, but the Greek part didn't feel like Assassin's Creed bar the Isu stuff.

ACO2 is a third-person action game in which you sneak around Greece and murder animals and people with a variety of melee weapons, bows, your hidden blade and skills. There's also naval combat with archers and ramming.

The Good

There's huge world to explore and it is even more impressive than ACO (AC Origins). There are so many pretty natural areas, cool landmarks, big statues, crazy temples, etc. It is worth playing just to see all this stuff.

Combat is much more interesting thanks to the special abilities. I especially love how you can throw people off of buildings and cliffs now. This is the first game since Dark Messiah that lets you properly sparta kick people. There are also cool new other abilities, including a very useful arrow barrage.

Naval combat is actually quite decent. I think i may like it better than Black Flag/Rogue. Cleaving ships in two is way better than tedious boarding.

Base assaults are even better in ACO2 as well. You can now save the game which vastly reduces the risk of wasting your time. Bases are more complex and together with your skills and items you have far more options to clear them.

Kassandra is really cool and maybe even better than Bayek of Siwa. While the story is pretty dumb, the voice acting is excellent and some of the side missions are actually quite decent.

Bounty hunters work somewhat like the nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor and this makes them far more interesting. They really hunt you now and can pose a serious threat in groups.

The Bad

The bounty system is obnoxious. If you assault someone in place A, someone else in place B will magically know and put a bounty on you. Eliminating all witnesses should've cleared bounties but it doesn't. Ugh.

The endboss sucks and you can see it coming from a mile away.

Because the landscape is filled with loot you're constantly looking for iron/wood instead of enjoying the surroundings. Really a dumb choice on their part.

In the DLC they force you into a romance with some dopey guy that no one cares about.

The whole civil war thing feels wasted. It is only relevant for randomised quests.

There are shitty randomised quests. You feel compelled to do them because they tend to give solid rewards.

Some of the monster fights suck because the monsters basically cheat and magically hit you in impossible ways.

Meeting her and getting the staff was executed poorly. She just dies right away?

Having multiple item sets is obnoxious already but switching between them is a pain which makes it worse.

The Ugly

Travelling takes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. Bethesda has let us fast travel everywhere since Oblivion (2006), Ubisoft should fuck off with their fast travel points.

Items level all the way to 99. When i discovered they level past 55 (ACO limit) it almost broke me. You constantly have to level them up.

Enemies are levelled and especially early on even a few levels difference results in a ridiculous lack of balance. A lot of the content is soft-gated this way for no good reason.

The worst thing about this game is the grinding. They wanted to nickel-and-dime you with XP boosts and crafting items and it really shows. I completed 99,99% of ACO in 70 hours. In this game i had barely started on the DLC at double the time.

Conclusion

ACO2 could have been the best AC yet. But because it takes about three times longer than necessary it has to settle for #2. Still really solid and fun, but it definitely comes with a disclaimer.

Granted, this is the most actual fun I've had in an Assassin's Creed game. And the ability trees are much better in this one (I didn't have to waste ability points on merchant discounts and being able to wait until nighttime). And the AAA aesthetic certainly works better here than in Origins (a very pretty desert is still a desert). And this time our hero's family wasn't tragically murdered, but only tragically attempted murdered, so I guess that's an improvement.

Other than that, though, the in-Animus storyline is (broadly) exactly the same as every other game (though at least with better characters, and though I was glib just a second ago about the whole family being alive thing, it does mean that revenge isn't the only possible motivation, which is definitely a good change), and the ex-Animus storyline, while slightly more developed than the non-existent one in Origins, hides what I assume is it's best stuff behind a paywall.

But honestly, I was prepared to give this game a pity fourth star, because I was having fun and it's the last one (I will, in case you were wondering, never play another of these games). And then they killed off Phoibe. And honestly, I don't know why I kept playing after that. Phoibe was, objectively, the best character in the game. When Barnabas tells you that there's a plague on Kephallonia (assuming you chose to let that happen so that Phoibe could have her playmate back) my first thought was, "Oh crap they better not have killed off Phoibe." I even traveled back to Kephallonia immediately just to make sure, but couldn't find her or any quest markers. So then I was really anxious for a few days. When she showed up in Athens I literally cheered. She's the best. And they kill her off. FOR NO F****KING REASON. When I was looking up whether this outcome was in any way avoidable, some dude on Quora was like, "No, because her death gives the hero motivation to take down the cult. It's the catalyst for the game," and that guy was a moron. I don't usually go in for ad hominem attacks but he's just a big ol' dumbdumb. You know how I know that Phoibe's death is not a catalyst for the game? Because by the time I got to that point in the game I'd already defeated 90% of the Cult of Kosmos (and upgraded my spear to Level 5) and risen to Tier 1 on the Mercenary track. Our hero is already plenty motivated to destroy the Cult because of the whole trying to murder her brother and tearing apart her family and now trying to also murder her and her mother with her brother THING, not to mention ruling the world and being evil and whatnot. Our hero did not need more motivation, what they needed was their plucky sidekick YOU HEARTLESS HACKS.

So yeah, that was my main problem with the game. That and the fact that the STAFF of Hermes Trismegistus is categorized as a F****KING SPEAR and NOT a STAFF. But mostly the other thing.

I've tried at various points to get into the Assassin's Creed series, going way back to the first game, and never found a hook that I could connect with. For several titles (including Black Flag, which I tried when it was an Xbox GWG) I couldn't even get out of the tutorial. That all changed with Assassin's Creed Origins, which I picked up on sale after being dazzled by the game's trailer. I spent a fair bit of time in Origins--despite never finishing it--as well as the prior game, Syndicate (another GWG), both titles that gave me faith that the series had found something I could enjoy. It boils down, mostly, to mechanics: Through Black Flag (at least) the climbing/vertical aspect of the games felt like platforming. I've never been good at platforming, even in classic games like Mario, and those early Assassin's Creed games required a bit more finesse than I can put into it. But by the time Syndicate rolled around, the vertical part of the game had been streamlined to a point that it no longer felt like platforming. I could do it. The other thing that Origins brought to the table was a game design that had some RPG undertones to it, with battles that felt inspired by The Witcher III.

Given I never actually finished Syndicate (despite loving it enough that I bought the DLC add-on pack) or Origins, I was a bit nervous about going in on Odyssey. But I was bored, it was on sale, mistakes were made. You know how it goes.

Today, when I finally put the period on the last main story quest, I ended Odyssey with about 200 hours spread out over about three months of play. Don't be deceived; this is not a 200 hour main storyline. But the damned thing about Odyssey is that it's so fun just running around, doing side quests (of which there's basically a never-ending stream) that there were points where I'd let weeks elapse before returning to my next main quest. To highlight the sticky aspect of perpetual side questing: I was level 45 or so and needed to consult a walkthrough about a stupid main storyline issue I was facing. The walkthrough--which was very helpful in getting me to where I needed to be--had the quest in question marked as a level 19 quest. I had spent so much time just mucking about that I was over 25 levels above the quest's intended difficulty. Now, the game does scale quests/enemies to keep you from over-leveling the game (so if I was level 45, the quest when I did it would have been level 43), but it just goes to show the endless abyss of things you can do.

Upon launching the game, you will have some decisions to make: You choose your character (I recommend Kassandra), your level (typical easy/normal/hard/nightmare-types; I always play normal), and, most crucially, whether or not you want to play the game with objectives marked. Unmarked objectives is the "as game makers intended" option--where you use clues from conversations and map references to figure out where to go on quests. It sounds good in theory--a super-submersive gamestyle where you're navigating based on terrain and gut, not an unnatural marker constantly hovering on your screen--but I know me; if it took me 200 hours to play WITH the game telling me where to go, guess how long it would have taken if I was just bumbling around like an idiot? (It's a trick question--I'd have thrown my controller out the window after two hours.)

Combat feels really good. You start with a quick/light and a slow/strong attack, but can unlock various other attack types and powers as you level up. I kept it simple as shit, though--I tried the slow/strong attack several times and it didn't click, so I was just mashing the square button (on a PS4 controller) the whole damned time. But the strategy behind using powers (most of which are metered behind both a timer and limited energy) and the allure of using the dodge button (which, when perfectly timed, creates a satisfying slow down) makes engages much more complex than "mash square."

Also important with battles is what equipment you're using. You can get by at early levels by just using whatever weapon/armor the game indicates is the best, but relying on that for too long will put you at a disadvantage. Each piece of equipment has up to four bonuses attached to them, so properly juggling these bonuses will seriously impact the way your battles unfold. For example, if you're using a sword that boosts the "hunter" stat (which, stupidly, is merely a term that refers to archery, NOT animals/hunting--took me FOREVER to realize that), yet you're not using your bow regularly, it's a wasted perk. Use the perks that boost your goals/intentions/style.

For me, I discovered that I loved the way spears operate in this game. Very fluid, very satisfying. Also loved using fire on my weapons to add burn damage. So as much as possible I centered my upgrades and perks on spears and fire. That allowed a sense of cohesion to my kit, where my equipment was working together rather than having opposing goals.

Perhaps the trickiest part of coming up with my kit was spending my ability points. As with most RPG-type games, your ability points--one per level gained--can be spent on a skill tree. And as with most RPG-type games, these skills come in two flavors: passive abilities and assigned abilities. (There's technically a third type: non-passive, non-assigned, ie, an ability that comes with a pre-assigned button, but for the sake of this particular point, I'm considering them passive abilities.) The assigned abilities are tricky because you have to equip them (like weapons/armor), and you have a limited number of slots to equip them in. The button you press changes depending on the slot, and if you have more than four abilities assigned, it requires a second button press, too. The point being, between unassigned abilities being a wasted ability point and the general confusion in tracking the button pressing, I generally found acquiring a lot of assigned abilities to be more headache than they're worth. I got four that I found useful and knew I could rely on, and stuck with them for the entire game.

It's not all roses. I loved the game, but one big issue kept me from being able to go a full five stars: The feel of movement controls when running around the world. Odyssey has a massive, massive map, and while there are a number of fast travel points throughout, you're doing a lot of running around. On console, running uses the right trigger. RT also prompts the climbing/jumping/parkour-type of stuff. At its best, you're seamlessly going from running, to scaling a cliff, to jumping, to running. You get that "best" feeling enough to understand, like, this is the way the game should feel. Yet the game puts so many barriers in the way of actually getting that feeling. Tiki torches (lined up regularly along roads and around buildings) stop you in your tracks--I can easily scamper up a statue, but somehow a little stick in the ground is an impassable barrier? Trees can be, for some reason, climbed about halfway but no further, causing your character to jump back down. There are a LOT of trees. If you're running and accidentally skim against a boulder, all of a sudden you're climbing in a direction you didn't even want to go. Some walls--despite contrary appearances--are considered smooth by the game and you have to find specific projections to lumber up. And cliffs, with plenty of projections, require your character to inch up at a snail's pace for no reason I can tell. It's doubly frustrating because I swear Origins didn't have the pesky movement issues. It was such a fluid game to control, yet with Odyssey we have... this. At least it doesn't feel like platforming.

All in all, a wonderful game. I'm pretty hyped to return to some of the prior instalments or advance on to the DLC. Either way, it was a wonderful way to spend three months.

Historical Fantasy Tourism Visits the Greek Isles

I was a bit apprehensive before starting AC: Odyssey as AC: Origins, finished in 2018, was still pretty fresh in my mind and Odyssey looked like it was going to be more of the same. It definitely is more of the same, but I loved the setting & characters in Odyssey much more than I expected to. Kasandra is awesome, easily the AC protagonist I’ve enjoyed playing as most and her narrative feels a lot more fleshed out and complete than characters from prior games. I wasn’t excited about the setting at all before I started but exploring a version of the Greek Isles that felt genuine in scope was thrilling. The map feels massive and intimidating when you zoom out, but the game does a great job as pacing your journey through each area and rarely ever feels like it is throwing an overwhelming amount of stuff at you to do. It builds on the great choices Origins made in how you discover and opt-in to content, and both games feel light-years away from the UbiTower design of earlier games in the series where the game just dumps a ton of boring tasks on your checklist every time you reveal a new area. On the story side the modular way the game handles the 3 Main Quests is really impressive, but it does feel like an overall unsuccessful choice as the narratives feel detached from each other and all 3 resolve in underwhelming ways. I really did enjoy the game but I wish they had opted for a more linear story with a bit more oomph in the big moments and the game still feels like it runs a bit too long with too many main quests & side quests that aren’t exciting to complete after the first ~30 hours.

The Greek world is beautiful, and you can murder half of it

[Kassandra, nightmare/hard difficulty] Short: The game world makes this game, and the world is absolutely breathtaking to look at and plenty of fun to explore. I finished this and that surprises me

I haven't played and liked an Assassin's Creed game since AC2: Brotherhood. I tried AC:3 and completely bounced off everything about that game.

I haven't played and liked an Assassin's Creed game since AC2: Brotherhood. I tried AC:3 and completely bounced off everything about that game.

So, with the announcement of a primary female protagonist AND the ancient greek setting I decided I would give the series another shot.

Overall, I DID have fun. At some point I took a large break between other games and then came back because I was just waiting on KH3. I didn't think I would go all the way into killing all the cultists and other storylines but I did! I did...most of what there was to do! I loved playing as Kassandra, loved her attacks and moves, thought the eagle was dope and Greek mythology is something of a passion of mine.

Some things I wasn't a fan of:

  1. The glitches. Multiple times I had to restart the game. I got stuck or died in a weird way or visually things were just going CRAZY... This certainly isn't something new to the series though.
  2. It's huge. TOO big. Unless you're into that. Which I USUALLY am? But at some point I was just really overwhelmed and wasn't sure it was all worth exploring at all.
  3. The combat (sometimes) and the sea battles (most of the time). At some point this didn't bother me so much, but the sea battles are just...annoying and the combat can get pretty dumb. It got better when I got overpowered.

This game was mostly a nice distraction and time waster for me to be honest. But I don't think it's a waste of time...if that makes sense.
