The amount of gimmicks in Story Mode kind of brought my thoughts down, but overall I liked the various modes of Tetris and Puyo Puyo.

I've played the first five acts of Adventure mode so far and I've enjoyed most of the cheesy story and characters way more than expected. The jokes are pretty generic but the voice acting really sells it. Some characters, however, do become a bit annoying when hearing them multiple times so It's better when you take a few breaks rather than blow through quickly but the gameplay challenges will make you want to keep going. The challenges are varied although I feel the second to last level in most acts have an extreme difficulty spike. I also find Puyo Puyo harder than Tetris but that's probably due to familiarity. I already knew how to play Puyo Puyo in a basic sense but wasn't aware of the importance of chaining. To get three stars in some of the Puyo Puyo challenges you really need to be able to make chains greater than 2. I still haven't quite figured out how to do chains consistently. The game did force me to at least try. I have not tried any competitive modes. There are probably individual versions of these games that exceed what you get in this game but having never played them I am completely satisfied with this game's renditions of Puyo Puyo and Tetris. But I hate the fusion of the two.

this game is for people smarter than me

A fun and varied presentation of two beloved puzzle franchises. If you dig either of these games and don't yet have a version for the platform you're considering (I played on Switch), you'll probably get what you want out of this title.

A fun and varied presentation of two beloved puzzle franchises. If you dig either of these games and don't yet have a version for the platform you're considering (I played on Switch), you'll probably get what you want out of this title.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the "Adventure" mode. Challenges varied enough to hold my interest till the credits rolled (and in bonus stages thereafter), and they do a good job of introducing increasingly advanced concepts. I feel I'm better at both games having played it.

It's got some flaws, though.

That aforementioned "Adventure" mode is overstuffed with completely superfluous story elements. Games like Paper Mario prove that it's possible to convey entertaining, lighthearted elements via text alone, but the characters and dialogue here are a snore-fest. Thankfully, you can skip these segments entirely with the push of a button.

The interface is also kinda odd, especially if you're a Tetris fan, since it tends to get second or even third billing in comparison to the Puyo Puyo and Fusion modes. If you're here primarily for Tetris, this is a better presentation of it than Tetris Axis on 3DS, but probably worse than Tetris DS.
