Do you like Sonic the Hedgehog? Do you like Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers? If yes and yes, then this Sonic the Fighters nonsense is a fun diversion. In 1996, AM2 of Sega released this Sonic fighting game in arcades, seemingly very few of them. IDK why they never bothered with a Saturn port, but eventually the game found its way into Sonic compilations and digitally for PS3/Xbox 360.

It's nothing to get too excited about, but I find it an interesting little look at the past. The 3D models of all these Sonic characters are impressive for the time, I especially like the cartooney ways they squish and stretch when they get pummeled. At first glance the gameplay seems simpler than Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers, but there are still lots of combos to learn if you actually want to get good. I'll stick with AM2's other fighters, but this Sonic entry is amusing enough to go back to every now and then. And the soundtrack has some nice tunes, gotta mention that.

Best thing about this one though? For the PS3/Xbox 360 release, they included a character that didn't make it into the arcade original... Honey. As in Honey (AKA Candy) from Fighting Vipers. But she's a cat now. What a crazy world we live in!

Final thoughts: Not much for me to comment about the mechanics as I don't typically play fighting games, but for a 90s arcade title the squash & stretch animations are fun and the music is catchy.
