While this got an amazing reception at launch, the world seemed to collectively cool on it, something that I kind of saw coming and naturally went along with. But I don’t know, I’ve been thinking about it again recently and think I would love something like this right now. I read back on how enthusiastic I was about it and am just like yeah, that actually was so much fun. I guess the game is doomed to a mix of “hidden gem” and “overrated” comments for the foreseeable future. Hopefully the ideas are revisited at some point.

The fact that it doesn't have manual saves makes it impossible to play for someone short on time. And when Julianna "is on the hunt", it's impossible to avoid her; she moves too fast and sees you from a distance. Uninstalled after 5 hours of play that felt eternal. I really wanted to like it.

I gave it a try, I just couldn't carry on. The concept was neat. I think it could have been good? But it plays more like an FPS that you just keep respawning with different clue/trails to follow, but no end in sight! I gave it a try, I just couldn't carry on. The concept was neat. I think it could have been good? But it plays more like an FPS that you just keep respawning with different clue/trails to follow, but no end in sight! When I realized that almost NONE of the things I was reading, whether it was a document, or the ghosty writing on the wall, meant anything to what I was trying to accomplish... Then I knew my criticism would overcrowd any chance of this experience improving. Novel idea, just not for me.

Came out of this vaguely unsatisfied. I don't really have much else to say.

OMG! Why can't I rebind the "Scrap" key?! I'm playing on a PC and there's no way to rebind the Unequip/Sacrifice key from "DEL" to anything else. This game is completely broken and makes no sense! Jokes aside, it's a great game! I just wanted to share the most minute criticism I have about Deathloop.

Having completed Colt's portion of the game, I'm now running into an issue playing as Julianna. Namely queuing for an online session always fails to return an active session. Having completed Colt's portion of the game, I'm now running into an issue playing as Julianna. Namely queuing for an online session always fails to return an active session. I suppose it's possible that a year later no one is really playing the game anymore, but I'd be surprised if that's true. Plenty of real players (with usernames) invaded my session when I was playing as Colt, so I can't imagine no one else is playing as Colt. Regardless, no luck finding an active Colt on PS5. I might play the intro of the game on Xbox to unlock "Protect the Loop" and see if I have more luck there. Its availability on GamePass might mean there are more active players on Xbox than Playstation, especially also because Dealthloop is newer to Xbox players.

Well, I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would. I don't know if the loop mechanic is as strong as it was in Mooncrash but it's working for me. I love the lack of high/low chaos in an Arcane game that is essentially rogue-like Dishonored, although I wouldn't give that mechanic up in the Dishonored series. I'm not at a place to say it's my favourite Arcane game, as that is still jointly held by Death of the Outsider and Prey but I do think this is more enjoyable than either mainline numbered Dishonored games thus far.

Ugh, I keep adding games to my list of favourite games from any previous year. This will be a tough year to sort out.

Trying out steam link on my N23 Chromebook...

it worked just fine (with a little bit of lag)

intriguing (and messily explained) mechanics. combat seems dumb. voice acting is overdone in an annoying way.

I do wanna see where it goes, though

finished the first "mission"

This piece reminds me of two games. Biomutant - because of overly talkative narrator(for BM)/main character (for DL). And this is a bad thing. And Watch Dogs 2. Both WD2 and DL try to picture scientists'/programmers'/hackers' work like a lifestyle. Like if you're scientist, this means you're just a regular extraverted person with uncommon job/hobby of inventing things. And …

And being a hacker is just something you chose as a hobby and you just do it, and it's as easy as playing mobile games.

I don't like rouge-anything and repetitive content, I don't like revisiting same places over and over again. And a lot of lvl design and even assets are taken from Dishonored. Looks... weird.

However this game has style, I really appreciate the design, effects, UI. And I'd play this game to the end, but unfortunately I got buried under tons of text tutorials in menu. Yes, even after couple of hours in the game you skip through 10+ windows that tell you what's what and ask you to press this button and click there. Just like in mobile games. However I sincerely believe that publisher or some manager made game designers do this. I have no other explanation.

2/5 for good visuals.

I heard the song from this game's trailer minutes ago and immediately reminded how disappointing this game was when I beat it months ago. Anyway here's my thoughts.

Pros:

  • cool aesthetic and art direction
  • awesome soundtrack
  • great performance from protagonist and main antagonist
  • invasion mechanic

Cons:

  • dumbed down gameplay
  • copypasted abilities from Dishonored
  • repetitive missions to get upgrades

  • messy UI and tutorials
  • dumb enemy AI
  • only one way to actually kill all targets

I came in expecting the usual Arkane immersive sim goodness and all I got is disappointment. How this game got nominated for GOTY is beyond me.

I enjoy that as of 20 September this is on both PS Plus Extra/Premium and on Game Pass. I wonder if Sony would have put it on PS Plus if it wasn't hitting Game Pass on the same day.

Glad to have choice, but I think I'll go PS5 on this one so I can make use of the DualSense.

Though to play this to break up my weird little Far Cry adventure, but it won’t hit PS Plus until 20 September, so I need to find something else before my used Xbox copies of Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal arrive and I fall back down into that hole.
