I echo many of the sentiments from the other commentators. The game plays like Civ V with a Sci-Fi futuristic twist. The early/mid game is very different due to the aliens and dealing with poisonous miasma tiles.
The game still has the same addictive "one-more-turn" hook like Civ V but lacks the personality and the historical nature of Civ V.
I think everyone, including me, wanted this game to be Alpha Centauri II, and it wasn't. It was a perfectly serviceable 4X in the mold of Civ V, but it lacked personality. The factions were mostly near future visions of places that exist now, and the leaders had no real depth to them, or anything interesting about them. The planet you play on is sort of "Planet" from Alpha Centauri (Frank Herbert's Pandora in all but name), but not quite. It feels like a game that was never sure what it wanted to be, and that makes it hard to engage with. It never gets its hooks into you the way Civ games do, or in the way Alpha Centauri did (there were mods some hero made where you could turn the factions into the old Alpha Centauri ones though). I put a fair amount of time into this game, but I never really enjoyed myself.
This game was a dissapointment... largely because it's basically Civ5 with a space skin on it. Everything takes place on ONE PLANET. I mean... "Civ! In space!" this could have been AWESOME, with building space ships and shuttling between worlds and etc. Instead, it's literally the same game as Civ5, it's just everything's weird and alien-y. Like. I'd rather just play the regular civ 5? idk man.
