The Punisher

Played this as a part of the Marvel Collection.

Honestly, it's pretty okay. Simple, short, fun. It's fast paced and responsive. Odd that it's only 2 player like it's Final Fight or something. Not really a big comic book fan, so I had no attachment to the characters, but it is interesting seeing a pre-Samuel L Jackson Nick Fury.

It's absolutely insane that the first collaboration between Marvel and Capcom was this shockingly violent take on Final Fight. I know this is a Punisher game, but I still found it jarring that this is quite frequently a game where you're just shooting a gun straight into the face of villains, blood flying as they die one by one. Just absolutely bonkers. I'm almost surprised this game wasn't under scrutiny when it came out in the '90s.

But as far as Capcom brawlers go, this is a pretty decent one. More than most of the other brawlers they were making at the time, The Punisher seems more focused on the collection of items, whether it's different weapons or collecting money (which really doesn't serve any purpose, other than maybe to give you extra lives?) But still, it adds a nice extra layer to a genre that can often be fairly repetitive. And I like how over-the-top and nuts this game is, but also, it makes me wish that there had been more Capcom/Marvel brawlers. Yet this also does feel more forgiving than the standard Capcom brawler of the time, and I'm not sure if the difficulty was amped up in the arcades, but I feel like I would've been able to get through this with less than $5 of quarters.

But this is a fun little piece of video game history that I'm glad is now more readily available than ever before.
