Picked it up to stay in the Zelda vibes a bit longer after finishing Tears of the Kingdom. The nonstop simple combat was fun and got me through the main objectives but I'm not going to go back and grind my way through the astounding amount of optional content.

I always thought that giving Link a motorcycle for hyrule: offroads in BotW was a bit of an odd decision. Seeing Zelda fight with it here though, that's beyond odd and more into the ridiculous realm.

So my break between BotW and TotK seems to be the DLCs of Age of Calamity. Why do I do this to myself?

The story is not as strong as BOTW or TOTK but it is good enough to scratch your itch to play a Legend of Zelda game. The gameplay is pretty straightforward and fun, although there is a pretty big difficulty spike towards the end, it’s still great. My only complaint is that the characters aren’t balanced. Some characters are incredibly easy to use and over powered, some sucks completely. Also some characters so big that you cant see the enemy attacks. Still had a great time playing!

Graphics: 5 Story: 8 Characters: 6 Value : 8 Side quests: 7 Main quest: 8 Would recommend: 8 Overall: 7.1

Definitely worth a try for any Zelda fans!

As much as I liked the game, I wish the devs had come up with a different of advertising the game. In the Japanese ads (where I was living at the time) they had my expectations on how badly the calamity had left Hyrule and would lead on to the Breath of the Wild main story. I have to say I was really curious how they would make us players ultimately "fail" the last boss fight because that's what we see in BotW which would be very hard to create because most games focus on how satisfying the gameplay is. I guessed they would have us play Ganon in his calamity form, giving us the opportunity to "win" the game and also connect the storyline to the one we know.

SPOILERS BELOW Instead we got a happy ending (which I know the characters deserve because honestly who doesn't??) and quite a different turn of events. I probably would have been more okay with it if I wasn't so prepared to see a bad ending from the advertisements.

Ok, playing as a Guardian does look cool, but I don't think it can get me to play more Age of Calamity. Don't get me wrong, I like what I played but I am also glad to be done.

I was admittedly disappointed when I found out this was a time travel story, and more disappointed when it became an utter grind.

I play primarily on my PC and mix it up with Nintendo exclusives on the Switch, but the poor technical performance of this game was just too much for me to handle.

However, I'm still excited for BotW 2 and if you like Age of Calamity, good for you!

As for the switch, I was gifted this game. I’m huge fan of Zelda and even bigger one for BOTW so once I got this I definitely needed to drop every other game I had for the switch to play this one.

Y'all, this game is a slog. I was having a good time early on, but there's just so much stuff towards what I'm hoping is the end of the game that's just filler. Y'all, this game is a slog. I was having a good time early on, but there's just so much stuff towards what I'm hoping is the end of the game that's just filler. In particular, there are these "hair-width trials" in which you can only take a single hit, which can be excruciating due to the hordes of archers they throw at you in the later ones.

In keeping with the Musou genre, there are a ton of characters. The characters are wildly differentiated though, with each of them having unique mechanics in addition to different combos and rune skills. Unfortunately, I find that the whole latter half of the catalogue (so far, anyway) are so strange as to be basically unusable. Some characters fly all over the screen with a simple light attack combo, and others seeming to be built entirely around dashing forward, making solo boss fights frustrating. I wouldn't be too bothered by these extra characters if not for the side missions that require their use.

I'm also... not thrilled about the story. I'll admit that I have no idea where it's going, but it feels dumb to me in a way I don't think I'm into. It's cool seeing this past era of the Breath of the Wild setting come to life, but the way it's all going down is pretty off-putting to me.

Anyway, I think I'm looking at what might be the last main mission on the map, or at least approaching the end. I want to finish it out but I have to say, it's pretty rough going at this point.

Ok, new plan. I am going to stop doing side-quests, which are really just there to help level your characters, and focus on the story. Let's see how far I get before I am forced to grind out some levels to progress.

It's, perhaps, a bad sign that I haven't played this game since the last time I posted about it. Usually when I enjoy a game I feel a near constant draw to jump back in. There are a few exceptions to that rule, games that I savoured over months, a little at a time. This doesn't feel like one of those. This feels like a game I partially want to finish and move on from. I like it enough to want to see it through to the end, but not enough to want that to drag out much longer. It's a shame really. I think it's because, despite the vast number of characters in the game, only a handful feel fun to play and the mechanics feel stale after a time. I love Impa and Urbosa, and I love kicking ass as as both of them because they feel very enjoyable to play, but I don't know if it's enough to keep me going much longer. Meanwhile, I have a stack of games that seem to be calling to me, and it's getting harder to resist.

Despite the fact that I am mostly enjoying this game, I have concluded that I don’t enjoy the Musou genre. I usually love a good grind, and when a grind is fun I can’t wait to get back to it, but Age of Calamity is starting to wear thin and I find the grind tedious. Every time I think I’m about to clear every side mission on the map, more pop up. And I don’t mean when I open up a new chapter. I’m fine with the chapters opening us side missions, but side missions in this game unlock other side missions. And they are all largely the same thing. There are missions with greater challenge but none that shift the gameplay in any meaningful way. I simply want to move on with the story. The BotW tie in and the characters are what are keeping me going at this point. If I wasn’t invested in the actual characters I think I’d put the game down and move on to something else.

I thought Link was pretty boring to fight with, so I was initially disappointed I can’t drop him from my party. But then a gave him a two handed blade and things got a lot more interesting.
