My First Platinum

This game is awesome. Everything that makes Ratchet & Clank awesome, with a gorgeous presentation. It’s well-paced, with enough secrets and side content to leave you satisfied if you want to do everything. Which I didn’t think I was going to do at first, but it ended up being the first game I’ve ever platinum’d. And a very reasonable platinum …

Which I didn’t think I was going to do at first, but it ended up being the first game I’ve ever platinum’d. And a very reasonable platinum it is—nothing too tedious, and only one trophy I needed to look up for help with.

Wonderful game.

Fun Game, Fine Bosses

Definitely did not have the same frustrating experience I had with the 2016 game, partly because all the weapons are at least sort of viable against bosses, partly because ammo drops in boss fights seem a little more generous, and partly because with the Arena fights I could just grind all the weapons up to level 5 while also getting …

Definitely did not have the same frustrating experience I had with the 2016 game, partly because all the weapons are at least sort of viable against bosses, partly because ammo drops in boss fights seem a little more generous, and partly because with the Arena fights I could just grind all the weapons up to level 5 while also getting all the raritanium I needed (don't fall for the lure of the Arena battles that specifically give raritanium as a reward—Francois will give you 3 or 4 raritanium and he's way faster to beat than even the undead grunthor (you can beat Francois in the time it takes Sue to enter the arena)). That being said, I don't know that any of the boss fights really stick out to me as being particularly memorable.

I also don't know that all the haptics really added anything to the experience for me, and honestly I kinda didn't like them. I like a good rumble as much as the next guy, but I've never seen the appeal of trying to make a controller feel less like a controller. Having to press harder to use one weapon than another doesn't really immerse me in the game or make me relate to the character, it just makes me not want to use that weapon.

My final nitpick is that, while I generally enjoyed the platforming, I occasionally got screwed over by camera positioning, particularly when trying to land a big jump on a small platform, as the camera would often angle itself in such a way that was really difficult to tell where I was actually going to land.

Other than that the game was pretty much an improvement on the 2016 release. Good story, great graphics, beautiful animation, and the pocket dimensions and Blizon crystal shifting really take advantage of the PS5's hardware.

p.s. Someone clearly watched "The Beast Below" and "Time-Heist" episodes of Doctor Who. Not that I'm complaining.

Amazing visuals, meh everything else

I was stoked about this next gen game. And the visuals definitely live up to that. It's definitely a great action game but I just don't find action games all that compelling anymore. To a one, I found every voice actor very annoying. The story was fine I guess, but it came off as too saturday-morning-cartoon for me. I'm certainly …

To a one, I found every voice actor very annoying. The story was fine I guess, but it came off as too saturday-morning-cartoon for me. I'm certainly glad I experienced some of the game to get a sense for how the dualsense controller could be used in a full fledged AAA game (something beyond Astrobot) and to see the tech in action for graphics and load times. The game is incredibly polished as well, and it's clear that the developers put a lot of love and care into the game. Still, I only completed about half of it before bouncing off of it.

I dropped EVERY game just to play this game and I'm extremely excited to play this. I've been a huge fan of Ratchet and Clank since the ps2 days and played 100% all of them so this is a no brainer for me. Let's see how this goes!

I'm not sure you can truly understand how amazing Rift Apart looks unless you can see it in 4K HDR. It's freakin incredible. I might Plat this one.

Ok I admit that I’m predisposed to believe this by default because I really like Insomniac and I may just slightly idealize them as a dev studio (even if I still recognize they make mistakes and always have room to grow), but here we go:

Not that I need extra encouragement, but today's Polygon article on Rift Part definitely has me even more excited for the game. I'm also very happy this is a continuation of the Crack in Time and Into the Nexus storylines rather than a new spinoff or alternate timeline. So excited!

I have goosebumps. I also have three major takeaways from this State of Play:

  1. Rift Apart is going to be a big game. There’s a lot to do in this game, more than I think I’ve ever seen in a Ratchet & Clank game.

  2. This game has big Crack in Time energy. Lots of side areas to explore, Clank dimension specific puzzles, and a world that seems equally as affected by dimensional tears as Crack in time was affected by temporal ones.
  3. It’s clear Insomniac learned a lot making Sunset Overdrive and Spider-Man. There’s a direct through line that one can already see from prior Ratchet and Clank games to Sunset Overdrive, then to Spider-Man and now back to Ratchet & Clank. It looks to me that movement will be far more important in Rift Apart than it ever has been in prior instalments, much closer to the importance of movement in Sunset Overdrive and then Spider-Man.

Needless to say I’m excited. A little under a month and a half to go. I can’t wait.

Uggh! Amazon just had PS5s but all I could get was an error page with cute dogs. So many cute dogs. No PS5.

I know I don't need one, but I do think that if I don't actively try to get one now, there's no way I can get one by the time Ratchet & Clank is released. I know, I also don't need that, but it's been a shitty year, I spent my last birthday in full lockdown unable to see family or friends, and there's a probable chance that will happen again this year. Is it unreasonable to want to play Ratchet & Clank on my next birthday?

Got into another PS5 queue just now. Naturally it sold out before I could snag one, but it also turned out to be the digital edition, which I don't want. Back to the drawing board.
