Another retro game I sucked so bad at, I had to watch a longplay. I couldn't even make it past the first level!

This is a puzzle game known as Clu Clu Land in the West and Kuru Kuru in Japan, the onomatopoeia for something going "around and around" which is exactly what you do in this game.

The stages feature an enclosed space filled with posts. You move through the posts to find hidden coins that are revealed when you pass through them. When you want to change course, you latch onto a post and swing yourself around and let go when you're facing the direction you want to travel. And this is where I kept messing up. I couldn't properly orientate myself, got confused, and would get gobbled up by the enemies. I think it's mostly a me problem as opposed to the controls being a problem. So instead of practicing, I just opted to watch a pro play it instead. And they made it look so easy!

The story must be included in the manual because I'm reading about the characters and plot and none of that is portrayed in the game itself. The player is a balloonfish named Bubbles (or Gloopy in Japan) who is searching for all the golden ingots. The enemies are sea urchins called Unira and they've stolen all the treasures from the underwater kingdom. Your job as the heroine is reclaiming the golden ingots in each stage, which also feature black holes, as if the sea wasn't scary enough.

Even though I didn't play much of this game, I think it's a solid puzzler if you can master its movements. It's satisfying watching the golden ingots be unveiled as they are usually arranged in a fun shape.

Hidden Gem (for me at least)

Didn't have this black box game as a kid, and after I got over some slight control frustration, I actually found the control difficulty to be compelling. Perhaps because I've played too much pac-man - this was a breath of fresh air and exactly the type of game that would be fun to high score chase.

A hybrid of Pac-man and Connect the Dots

I've spent more times than I should've, playing this game.

combining the concept of "Pac-man where you have to collect the small dots and don't get caught by the ghosts" and "Connect the dots to form a shape" is just simple yet Extremely fun to play. and the way this game controls makes the player feels more involved into things. …

It's very challenging, very simple, Extremely fun, and it's also got some learning curves. this might be the most underrated NES launch game.

Clu Clu Land: Unwieldy Swingin'

Clu Clu Land fools with its fun, vaguely abstract little premise. What lies within a very simple look is a fiendish and frustrating action game.

Clu Clu Land fools with its fun, vaguely abstract little premise. What lies within a very simple look is a fiendish and frustrating action game.

The evil sea urchin Unira has placed a bunch of hidden gold bars in an underground mystery maze and the character Bubbles must swing along poles in the mystery maze to collect all the gold bars while avoiding Unira. This is much easier said than done.

By holding out a directional button, Bubbles can swing in a preferred direction. This makes it difficult to just go up/down/left/right as holding it down too long can swing Bubbles crazily around one pole or not at all. Bubbles has shock waves she can use to stun Unira temporarily but must also deal with invisible reflecting paths, holes of death, and a strict time limit to guess the pattern of each level.

The game is a little too frustrating for what seems like a few patterns of gold bars, with most players making more mistakes and dying instead of tuning some good swings. There's a 2-player mode but it comes down to a lot of the same - awkward swinging into Unira and into each other.
