3.56 average rating based on 197 ratings
This Metal Slug entry continues SNK’s beloved run-and-gun series with its trademark blend of explosive action, hand-drawn 2D animation, and over-the-top humor. Developed by Mega Enterprise and Noise Factory after SNK’s bankruptcy, the game aims to capture the chaotic spirit of its predecessors while introducing a few new twists.
The gameplay remains fast, fluid, and satisfying, you mow down waves of enemies, rescue POWs, and commandeer vehicles in a series of beautifully detailed stages. The controls are as tight and responsive as ever, making every dodge and counterattack feel rewarding. It also introduces a new scoring system that encourages riskier, high-speed play, along with two new playable characters, Nadia Cassel and Trevor Spacey, who add some freshness to the roster.
Visually, the game sticks to the vibrant, cartoonish art style the series is known for, with expressive animations and chaotic explosions filling the screen. However, longtime fans will notice that many sprites and backgrounds are recycled from earlier entries, giving it a slightly less polished feel compared to other entries in the series. The soundtrack delivers plenty of energy but doesn’t quite reach the iconic level of the earlier titles.

While this game doesn’t push the series forward in any major way, it remains an enjoyable and challenging shooter that captures the essence of arcade excitement. For fans looking for more of the same run-and-gun chaos, it’s a solid if somewhat familiar, installment in the legendary franchise. There is no excuse to skip this one, even though it is one of the weakest entries in the franchise.
Sorry but I was not fond of the new playable characters, I like Eri and Tarma better. They also reused too many assets. The best thing about this game is that you can turn into a monkey lol That's the only thing I remembered about this game, actually.
Platform:
Neo Geo Arcade version.
Graphics/Sound:
If you have played any Metal Slug game you know that this is one of the reasons it's famous. On the soundtrack this was the first where I noticed more metal/distorted guitar use.
Gameplay:
Compared to Metal Slug 3 this feels a bit toned down. It's not as ridiculous when it comes to amounts of on screen action, and the settings are not as exotic as in 2 and 3. Gameplaywise there is not much new really, it's just what you're used to.
Difficulty:
I felt this was quite a bit easier than Metal Slug 3 for example. There is a few things like the container ship stage that made me lose a lot of lives, because it was so easy to be knocked off int o a pit. But apart from that, from a difficulty perspective this should be played before metal slug 2.
While this is not as good or varied as Metal Slug 3 it's still a very good game, the main problem is that its prequel is so hard to beat in terms of quality. I sad a lot of laughs playing through this, especially with the Yetis.
