This game is the equivalent of watching Rambo, Indiana Jones Lost Crusade, Independence day and The Rocketeer at once.
How I rank all the Metal Slug games:
This is game I had messed around with at various arcades my entire life, but never actually committed to seeing it through. I always really admired the cartoonish art style, detailed character animations and of course, the excessive violence. So when a friend and I noticed it was available on PSN many years later, I decided it was finally time. And I gotta say, it didn't disappoint. It's only like an hour or so long and gets absurdly difficult near the end to bleed you of your precious quarters but thanks to unlimited continues (please always include this as an option in arcade ports), we were able to see it through to the explosive end. All from the comfort of my own living room, as opposed to a sticky arcade cabinet in a loud pizzeria. Sometimes it pays to wait.
Nothing much to say, the game is really fun to play with friends and the pixel art is smooth and beautiful. A great game who aged well.

Flawless

I loved Metal Slug as a kid. I would always search it out in an arcade and even downloaded an emulator and likely several viruses to be able to play it on my dad's PC. I knew there were several sequels but I always returned to the first game. A year or so ago I decided to get all of the Metal Slug PC ports available. I got a Steam deal that included Metal Slug 1, 2 and 4 (don't ask me why 3 was not included). I had only played 1 but enjoyed 2 and 4. They felt like a similar romp through the metal slug world. I finally picked up 3 recently, expecting it to be another playable but paled version of the first game. Boy was I pleasantly surprised by this game. It is now my favorite Metal Slug, outpacing even the heavy nostalgia of the first game. There is just so much happening in this game, a plethora of bad dudes and different worlds. I played it straight through and will surely play it many more times in the years to come.
This Metal Slug entry stands as one of the most iconic and ambitious run-and-gun shooters ever made. Originally developed by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade system, this console port retains the essence of the arcade experience, fast-paced action, detailed 2D visuals, and over-the-top humor, while offering players the convenience of home play. So it's essence is basically the same as it always was, which is a very good thing to keep since this is a beloved franchise.
The game picks up the signature formula: side-scrolling mayhem filled with enemies, vehicles, and explosions, all wrapped in gorgeously hand-drawn pixel art. Every stage bursts with personality, from war-torn battlefields and underwater missions to zombie-infested cities and even alien invasions. The branching level system adds replay value by letting you choose different routes and encounter new challenges each time they play.
Gameplay is tight and responsive, with smooth controls that make every dodge, jump, and shot feel satisfying, you can easily replay it multiple times in order to see all of it's contents. The difficulty, however, remains punishingly high, typical of arcade titles designed to eat coins, but it’s also part of what makes it so addictive. Mastering each level feels rewarding, …

Visually, the game is a treat, the sprite work and animations are some of the best ever produced in 2D gaming, packed with humor and detail, whether it’s enemies surrendering in panic or the exaggerated explosions that fill the screen. The soundtrack and sound effects complement the intense action perfectly, maintaining the arcade spirit that defined the series, it is as always one of the best of it's kind from the very first title to the very last entry.
This game is a masterpiece of arcade design, intense, beautiful, and endlessly fun. Despite its difficulty and minor technical hiccups, it stands as one of the finest run-and-gun games ever made. There is little to no reason not to play this if you like this kind of game, and if you are a fan of this franchise then this is definitely a must-play, the Metal Slug franchise really have almost no bad games overall.
It was here that the franchise officially achieved its legendary status; in my humble opinion, Metal Slug 3 is the pinnacle of the Run and Gun genre. Without a doubt, this is the most memorable Metal Slug game.
You can change into a zombie and then destroy helicopters by vomiting a giant torrent of blood across the screen, need I say more? This game never gets old.
Platform:
Neo Geo Arcade version.
Graphics/Sound:
The graphics are probably the best 2d sprite graphics in any game ever. period. Yes there is stuff like Rayman Legends, but that came waay later. These graphics are unbelievable, they're so detailed, and every most improbable situation gets loads of funny unique animation frames. The sound is good too, but you're often too busy looking at the awesomeness on screen to notice it. I know the same could be said about Metal Slug 1 and 2/X and I'll probably say it again when I review those, but I feel this might have the best graphics of the series.
Gameplay:
The gameplay hasn't changed since Metal Slug X. Straight run and gun action. It briefly changes into a vertical shmup, and I can only guess they got the idea from games like Gunstar Heroes, but the two genres are related anyways so it works perfectly. Where this game truly shines compared to others in the series is the "storyline" and scenery. What happens here is just the most over the top that the series ever went.

Difficulty:
In terms of difficulty this is one of the hardest Metal Slug games I think. I always needed more coins to beat this game than others, even on two player coop. It begins normal but the boss on the second level is already outrageously hard and the last level cost me half of the overall coins needed.
This game is a must, for anyone who likes 2d action games. It's perfect in many aspects, and oh so gorgeous. But best play it in coop with a friend, makes it a lot more fun.
