Grandia 2 is a 3D RPG, viewed from a top-down perspective for most of the game and a 3rd person view during battle. Controlling Ryudo, the player will explore various locations, locating townspeople and objects within an area to interact with. Towns and dungeons are displayed in the same manner, though dungeons tend to be mazes filled with monsters and towns tend to be friendly areas filled instead with conversation and shops. Any monsters present in these areas will be shown walking around. Walking over to and touching the monster in any way will activate a battle. If the monster notices the player approaching it is considered a normal battle, if Ryudo is able to approach undetected the player's party will gain the initiative in battle, if any party member besides Ryudo is approached by the enemy then the party loses initiative. Fun RPG if you don't mind early PlayStation era polygons and a bit of jank. Bright environments and characters with the right level of quirkiness, although the story was fairly generic. I would have given it a 4 star rating, but it dragged on too long without any new mechanics or abilities keeping the gameplay fresh. Would recommend on sale …

I played the original Grandia a few years back and just now am getting to the sequel. Although the battle system remains one of my favorites for any RPG, the story and worldbuilding leave a lot to be desired here. I don't even know if there are any side quests because each town is so bland that I'm never motivated to go around talking to everyone. Really wish the settings and enemy variety were more exciting. Will still probably finish the game though.

I loved this game and liked it just a little more than the first one. Great soundtrack too.

RPG battles are something I merely tolerate. I'm not an RPG fan and the gameplay has never been the main reason I played one, it's usually the story and world building. Grandia 2 is probably the first RPG where I liked the battles. They're not random as enemy groups appear on the maps and you can choose to avoid or engage them. In battle, you can time your attacks to interrupt enemy and boss attacks.

The story and characters are pretty generic although there is one or two interesting twists near the end. Despite this I actually like the characters, particularly the conversation you can have with party members when you're all eating together. I forget what actually leads to them. But you have the choice of actively asking questions or just skipping the whole thing and not talking at all.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the Anniversary Edition working, and the original is laggy and sluggy to the point it is pretty much unplayable. Anyone got advice on the secret to getting either of these to work? or do i just need to download a dreamcast ROM?
