A Somewhat Underwhelming Expansion
Stormblood is more of Final Fantasy XIV, a game I've already found a lot of comfort in, so it's no surprise that from a gameplay point of view there isn't much for me to say. However when it comes to the story, I found it to be lacking in execution. There'll be some major spoilers in this review, but …
Stormblood is more of Final Fantasy XIV, a game I've already found a lot of comfort in, so it's no surprise that from a gameplay point of view there isn't much for me to say. However when it comes to the story, I found it to be lacking in execution. There'll be some major spoilers in this review, but I'll tag them properly because I'd be pissed if someone spoiled me in regards to these.

Many of the payoffs from major plot points often aren't all that satisfying, and the plot armor on the main cast is just obnoxious sometimes. I was very frustrated to see that one of my favorite moments in the expansion,
The expansion as a whole has an issue with villains just not being all that interesting, I think. I made a status update the other night about how Grynewaht was really lame and how I hoped to see his little story arc have some sort of interesting tie up but that disappointed as well. It was certainly a little tragic, or would have been, if the game had given me any reason to care for this guy. He just comes off as another faceless bad guy except this time they decided to give him a name to make him seem more important. The big issue is he has just as much character as any of the other Garlean generals or soldiers you run into in the game, so the final confrontation with him just feels limp.
Fordola is handled better, but also comes out feeling a bit underdeveloped. A few times near the end she lists off the names of some of her allies/friends that died and I remember pausing for a moment and wondering if I was supposed to know who they were or something. I imagine not, since I think most of her backstory occurs prior to the events of the game, but it seemed odd to give these characters names when you never see them or hear anything else about them. Maybe it's something I missed or forgot about, but it was hard to feel anything without any context for her relationship to these people. Yotsuyu suffers from a similar (but slightly less pronounced) issue where she also goes on a big rant about her tragic past that ultimately can't have much impact because there wasn't enough setup for it.

I actually really liked
It was great to see
I've been focusing a lot on story and characters here but I want to take a little to say I found the new maps/environments added in Stormblood to be of very high quality. They're a lot of fun to explore and feel much more exciting than the frozen wastelands that dominated much of Heavensward. I also love that I can swim underwater now. Deep water kind of freaks me out a bit, and the game managed to trigger that fear with some of the optional underwater locales, which is definitely a point of praise for me, even if it wasn't really intended.
And yes, I did spend a couple hours of my playtime climbing the tower in Kagane just for two sightseeing entries. Afternoon well spent.

I think in the end my biggest nitpick with this expansion is that it doesn't really feel like what I come to Final Fantasy for. The majority of the plot has you very down in the weeds helping to orchestrate a rebellion and it really comes off as more of a Fire Emblem type of thing. It's even punctuated at the end with a fight against a
