A solid 7.5 out of 10 looking game
Layers of Fear as many other this-kind-of-walking-sim-games really want to be a psychological horror. Does is succeed though? Kind of... This is an example of a game that makes me want to explore which happens rarely. And yes I am clearly not the biggest lover of immersive sims, but I do appreciate them from time to time. So let's get straight to the point: what this game makes right
Writings and general plot
And good God I am glad devs made it right!
Layers of Fear tells you 6 different aspects of main protagonist's life - a promising young painter that has succeeded in a few ways. Each part is interesting and told in a specific way where some things stays unknown until later. The whole story is complete, makes sense and gives you a a good "horrory" kind of feel there is really no downsides unless you are lazy and don't like to read since 80% of plot tells itself through notes.
Art direction and immersivity
There was not a single room that felt out of style and the whole art direction is at point. A really good looking point. And as a good example of narrative design the interior complement the story and kinda drives it
Whole dynamic and game length
Usually I like long games with more than 50 hours of gameplay but Layers of Fear ends right where it needs to. Don't get me wrong If they could do it longer they probably would, but the game tells a story and that story is not so big. Moreover the mechanical gameplay is dull and there is not really much you
actually can do.
Unfortunately not everything in this short game is great
You might wonder why I think this is a 3 star game with 7.5/10 rating? Well there are reasons and some of them are about the game engine and "polishness" which I can forget about. But other are fundamentally in the whole idea of the game itself and this is where the real problems begins.
Technical part
Oof... I was playing Nintendo Switch version of game and i highly recommend to avoid this port. It's just awfully problematic. The framerate is unstable and sometimes game even freezes for a second. The resolution is low and textures are blurry and brings me back into ps2 era games. Some texture are going crazy and flashy the lightning sometimes looks off. And on my first boot I simply fell down through a floor and had to restart the game just 10 minutes in! So my horror experience was kinda ruined from the start, at least to some degree where I was more afraid of running into a bug instead of a screamer. Speaking of which.
The best Layers of Fear can offer you is screamers. But is it bad?
Now this is kind of controversary since it all depends on your expectations. I was sure I'll get a horror game but turns out it more like a The Picture of Dorian Gray on steroids kind of horror. The really scary part lies in a story you slowly uncover but other than this you only get nasty "Boo" effects and screamers throughout the entire game. Is it bad? For me - yes, I was expecting this game to be more... how do I put it? Original in creating a discomfort and scary surrounding. Unfortunately this game is not about it.
But at least gameplay is good, right?
No it is not. I was raised by an old school horrors like Silent Hill and Resident Evil and there was nothing scarier than School in SH1. Gives me chill every time though I know perfectly every room in that damn part of the game. But are those games similar enough? No they are not and this is the main problem!
There is nothing to do except for slowly walking and opening doors. Is it interesting to progress the story? Hell yes. Is it interesting to play? Hell no! Player does not have inventory, health system, any kind of enemies and all of this create a special feeling of emptiness in mechanical gameplay. Some rooms are looking really nice and can create a discomfort but deep inside you know that nothing can hurt you. Everything you see and hear is just a trigger to little cutscene that will result in your further progress. And this is bad.
Yes there are some puzzles here and there but the only type we got is safes/numbers which is simply not for everyone (and I don't find them entertaining). Looking for codes and than searching for a place to enter it... For a 3 hours long game it might be fine, but even then they all are about looking and remembering for 3 digit codes entire the game. The only time it was not about 3 digit code was ouija board and it has 9-digit code!
So what is the result?
- -1 point for the gameplay mechanics. Fortunately the game is short enough to end fast
- -1.5 point for being the bad horror. I am really easy to frighten but not a single time I experience a real fear
- -1.5 for bad Switch port only
6/10 for Nintendo Switch release
7.5/10 for any other platform with stable FPS
If you like reading stories, early 20th century is your setting and you like painting give it a try! It is short, the atmosphere is great and and plot is really good. If you are into some gameplay adventure games or looking for a scary horrors this is not for you :)
