The PSP releases are a port of the original Japanese PC game with the rhythm bar removed. The 2015 release is a remasted version of the original PC game. The game had to be remade for the 3DS, 'Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure'. It is a port of the remastered version that has been changed to better fit the systems controls and use the 3D feature. Terrible controls and repetitive level/enemy design make what could have been a cute Japanese adventure game into an uninspired grind.

Platform:

PSP version.

Graphics/Sound:

The graphics are simple for the PSP, but it looks very nice an colorful. All the characters are overly cute, the main hero, a little girl, is also a fresh concept, and presented in an actually believable way (not that the game is meant to be very realistic). The music ranged from very good and fitting to outright annoying, but that's what you get with such a happy game.

Gameplay:

It's a nice action adventure, a genre of which classic gaming doesn't have enough of. So I was happy to find this on the PSP. You fight with the help of monsters agains phantoms, but all of them are equally cute and nice. This time you don't fight with a sword, but with a drill instead, and to launch some special attacks you do twiddles like in a fighting game. You can buy new headdresses, all of which have a specialized bonus, for example one makes you immune to water, another makes your attacks stronger and so on, so you usually change your headress with each situation. There is also a lot of hidden stuff to find in levels and throughout the game, so there is …

Difficulty:

The game is relatively easy, which fits the lighthearted theme. But there is also some challenging parts. Especially the second last boss (Black Bean) is a real bastard, and my fingers almost fell off when I beat it.

Conclusion:

It one of the most charming and cutest games I know. Everything is just sweet even the final boss. The levels are at times a bit too similar to each other, but apart from that it's a very good game, that makes you want to play more than you planned every time you pick it up.

A fun cartoony little adventure. Plays somewhat like Spyro the Dragon or Ape Escape, but with light RPG elements. Would be fun for kids or nostalgic adults. I played through the game with an Xbox 360 controller, but the gamepad support was definitely not the best as it did cause some issues and the in-game text always assumes you're playing with keyboard and mouse. There's also a spike in difficulty toward the end of the game that may frustrate some younger or less experienced players. These minor gripes aside, playing this game was pretty enjoyable experience. 3.5/5
