Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh main Call of Duty game and the sequel to Call of Duty: World at War. The game differs from most previous installments, which would involve a usual three-country campaign, while Call of Duty: Black Ops features two playable countries (Russia and the USA) but only has an American campaign. Several new features are also introduced, such as dive-to-prone and the available use of a flashlight on certain weapons. Furthermore, the campaign's playable characters now speak while being controlled by the player. Extra game included within: + Zork (Apple II)

Brilliant

One of my favourite campaigns of the Call of Duty series and probably the most iconic, in terms of a memorable story, loveable characters and quotable writing. The online multiplayer was also legendary and had many great modes and maps, and has held gamers engaged for almost 15 years now, still going strong. I remember servers being full again when the pandemic hit, as many dusted off their PS3's, hunkered down at their parents house, as I was. Memorable, Multifaceted, Magnificant.

MASON!!!!; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Campaign

Blops was the game to be playing back in the day. I remember how HYPED I was abt the campaign and while it's aged quite clearly, the rush of nostalgia helped to retain some of the small joys. For instance, rappelling down a cliff! Really nothing that special but man in 2010??? smack my @ss, call me Reznov and gimme that rope!

Anyways, the game is still ultimately an oohrah the U.S. military RULEZ kind of game - the ending shot in particular of you looking up at the triumphant spread of US warships in the Gulf of Mexico sent me into the beyond. (Also, pinning (all?) the chemical warfare in Vietnam on the Russians - interesting take!) But socio-political considerations aside, it's an iconic game - memorable set-pieces, a plot-twist that had everyone losin their minds, a relatively unexplored setting, it's the COLD WAR - who doesn't love the cold war!!!

It does try at one point to point out the hypocrisy of the U.S. but its attempt is drowned out by your AI companions shouting about how much they love slicing the throats of Vietcong soldiers.

9.5/10 - Exceptional

enter image description here

FPS - The story of Alex Mason, who, under intense interrogation, unravels his suppressed memories of covert Cold War missions and a conspiracy involving brainwashing and the Soviet biochemical weapon, Nova 6

PROS:

++ Ambitious story. This is the first entry in the series that I felt that they tried doing something different with the story. And though some may find it a terrible story, I personally found the narrative, and how it was told, engaging and exciting. Though the plot twist was predictable, (Reznov died in Vorkuta, and his subsequent appearances was just Mason's imagination) I still found the story to be a thrilling rollercoaster ride. It was also nice to finally have a voiced protagonist (Alex Mason), and the side characters were cool too (Woods, Bowman, Hudson, and Weaver).

++ Great campaign. Outside the narrative, I really enjoyed the campaign. Although I don't think the levels reach the highs that MW1 and MW2 reached, it was still a very fun time. From the "Vorkuta" prison break, escaping Kowloon in "Numbers", the flashback story of Reznov in "Project Nova", and the dual perspective of Mason and Hudson in "Rebirth".

++ Multiplayer. I have a lot of nostalgia for Black …

From the "Vorkuta" prison break, escaping Kowloon in "Numbers", the flashback story of Reznov in "Project Nova", and the dual perspective of Mason and Hudson in "Rebirth".

++ Multiplayer. I have a lot of nostalgia for Black Ops' multiplayer offerings since I spent dozens of hours on it as a teen. It was filled to the brim with content: lots of things to unlock, a variety of guns and accessories, ability to make custom emblems, ability to re-watch past matches, ability to play with bots, inclusion of split-screen multiplayer, etc. And with the addition of COD points, Wager Matches were also introduced which held some of my favorite game modes such as "Sticks & Stones", "Gun Game", and "One in the Chamber". The maps were also great!

++ Zombies. Although WAW introduced zombies, I think it was Black Ops that perfected it. The game came with two maps. "Kino der Toten" is a basic map compared to Treyarch's future maps, but because it was so basic, it birthed a lot of Zombies fans, including myself. It was easy to just pick up and play, but provided a fuller experience compared to WAW's "Nacht der Untoten". I just find it fun trying to go for high rounds with my brother and friends. The second map "Five" was also great and had quite a silly tone (playing as President Kennedy, Fidel Castro, etc.). It was a harder map having to deal with the Scientist and the finicky teleporters, but it was still a really fun time.

++ Dead Ops Arcade. This easter egg has no right to be this good. Essentially, DOA plays like the retro game "Smash TV". It's an overhead twin-stick shooter and you're trying to survive for as long as possible. But rather than being a hollow experience, it was relatively fleshed out with a variety of stages, weapons, enemy types, environmental obstacles, and even a final boss at Round 40. It supported 4-player couch co-op and it was loads of fun. Even solo I was having a great time!

++ Setting. Treyarch managed to find its own niche with Black Ops. Rather than going back to WWII or copying IW's Modern Warfare, it goes in-between and is set in the intriguing Cold War setting.

++ Dolphin diving.

CONS:

-- Kowloon Mission. The mission itself was great, but on my replay, it was bugged. If the player got ahead of Clarke (the man you were supposed to escort), you break the mission and you will not be able to move forward. This lead to some frustration and inevitably led to me restarting the mission.

-- Downgraded Visuals. Can't really pinpoint the exact reason, but this entry seems to look worse when compared to the previous entry, MW2.

-- OK Antagonists. Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner were mediocre antagonists. None of them were all that memorable, unlike General Shepherd in MW2.

the most impactful cod title
This review is for the Xbox 360 version

this game is so close to 5/5 man, the campaign is so nostalgic and so impactful, literally gave us the perfect cast of characters to lead COD, it’s 2025, 15 years later, and we still have them in the games.

zombies was new-ish but still had the perfect formula, and is arguably one of the best

So Much Variety and Charm!
This review is for the Xbox 360 version

I've played Black Ops way back when it came out. However, I actually only just replayed, and finished the campaign for the first time. I think back then I only played the first few missions, and then went straight to Zombies and Multiplayer.

Simply put, a 9.5/10! So much fun, and so much variety in the missions and set pieces. Easily so much charm too in terms of the characters, and even the music that takes place in some of the missions. Truly just action-packed and a lot of fun!

*Warning: Spoilers* Pleasant surprise in the series for me.
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I am honest, when Call of Duty: Black Ops came out, I was not expecting much. Although I enjoyed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 enough, it was the point that I realized that all the games are/were going to be the same from that year on.

Every year, a recycled engine in a “new game”. Although this grandpa statement is true in the series today, back then, Call of Duty: Black Ops was a pleasant surprise that really impressed me.

In this game, you play in the setting of the cold war and the Vietnam war, and take control of Captain Mason. The game is set twenty three years after Call of Duty: World at War, and because of this, characters from this game make a return, like Dimitri Petrenko and Viktor Reznov. This alone was worth it and I instantly enjoyed this game. Then there is the fact that you meet historical figures like Fidel Castro and John F. Kennedy, which made it even better.

In terms of story, you play in classic Call of Duty style, in which you first try to assassinate Fidel Castro, an attempt that fails because you kill his body double and not …

In terms of story, you play in classic Call of Duty style, in which you first try to assassinate Fidel Castro, an attempt that fails because you kill his body double and not the man himself. Mason stays behind while the rest of his squad can make extraction, and is captured by the real Fidel. You are “gifted” to Fidel’s Russian buddy, Nikita Dragovich, and send to a brutal gulag named Vorkuta.

You meet Viktor Reznov and learn of the events and schemes of the old Nazi war machine and the Soviet part in this. He tells you the tale of the heroic death of Dimitri Petrenko, who sacrificed himself to blow op the Nova 6, a cargo ship with secret weapons and intel, desired by Nikita Dragovich and the British Special Forces. After learning this, you and Reznov make plans to escape the gulag. This escape succeeds and you make your way back to the U.S., where you meet John F. Kennedy. He sends you back on a mission to assassinate Nikita Dragovich and eliminate members of Ascension, a Soviet program to grant refuge and sanctuary for Nazi scientists. You succeed and make your way to Vietnam afterwards.

Although your mission is to defeat the Vietcong, you stumble on intel about the relationship between the Vietnamese and Nikita Dragovich and try to recover a Nova 6 shipment. This fails and your squad mate Bowman is killed in a forced Russian Roulette game. You escape with Woods from the Spetsnaz and Vietcong. In an epic plot twist, it turns out that the main protagonist, Mason, is brainwashed and “programmed” to carry out Dragovich’s will and Reznov is already dead. It is believed that Mason is behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the German Scientist Steiner, although Mason believed that Reznov did this.

It was a story like this that I needed to love the series again. It was just so epic and it was beyond my wildest expectations in this particular series. I still think Call of Duty: Black Ops had the best story/campaign of them all.

In terms of graphics, the game looks great. It runs on the enhanced World at War engine and it shows. Effects, lighting and gun impact look great and I just cannot complain. Animations are fluent too.

Audio wise, the sound, music and voice acting is on point and sound great. It enhanced the experience and added to the “classic cold war” atmosphere.

Call of Duty: Black Ops returned the Zombie Mode returns, better than ever. I still think this game has the best “Zombie Mode” of all the installments in the series.

The game itself plays just like any other Call of Duty game, which is smooth, accurate combat with decent AI, and a good pace.

This game is, alongside Call of Duty: World at War, the most brutal of them all. The violence, hostile atmosphere and dramatic cinematics make this game stand out.

In the end, I did not expect this game to be this good and I had a very good time completing it, restoring my faith in the series (at the time).

Definitely recommend this gem!

В свете последних событий плохие русские начали напрягать. В остальном играется хорошо и динамично, но начал ловить себя на мысли, что отнюдь не клюквенный сюжет не воспринимается. И даже вызывает определенное отторжение.

Call Of Duty : Black Ops (2010)
This review is for the PlayStation 3 version

Kino, Five, Shangri La, Ascension, Call Of The Dead, y Moon. Black ops es donde zombies realmente comenzo a tomarse a si mismo con la seriedad debida, y comenzo a desarrollar su impresionante lore a partir de este juego. GOAT en mis libros.

Great Call of Duty Game, With a Twist.
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

first play

played on gt 730 i3 7100 Played the game twice already.

Coming Straight to gameplay, in the highest difficulty some missions(Vietnam), are tough, you can only play by shoot and prone. no other way to complete the missions.

but coming to the story, loved, the way they included Reznor from the world war game and a series of missions that are related to military and black ops. Great Story and delivered perfectly with the twist and music at times. The rock music is a bit too much though.

the graphics are great for the time, this was released and runs smoothly without any frame drops. but sometimes the soldiers and enemies are just stuck without shooting or anything, maybe the code didn't render, but can easily kill them, so no big deal. (made the missions easy at the hardest/veteran level).

the weapons are ok, some are downright bad to shoot, but at least have one good gun for the mission. not a lot of sniper missions like in the world at war though, too many vehicle-based missions in my opinion.

Great game for the series and went downhill, already played black ops 2 and that is not good, …

Review of the Campaign Only

Replayed this for the first time in years this weekend. What a terrifically written Cold War thriller. The story is incredibly engaging, full of deep characters with complicated motivations. A much more intelligent game than what you would expect from a 6-10 hour FPS campaign. Since I was replaying the game and know how it all ends, I really noticed the incredibly layered and subtle foreshadowing this game provides this time around. It's rare to see a developer of this genre of game to have such a tight and expert grip on their story. The pacing is unbelievable, with almost every level feeling wonderfully unique and almost every one feels crucial to the progression of the plot. There are perhaps only 1 or 2 filler levels that don't advance the plot much and even those are still pretty fun. From the Bay of Pigs invasion, to the escape from Vorkuta, to a chase across the rooftops of Kowloon and a flashback mission to the 1940s, the variety in the level design is fantastic. The only real negative I have to say about this campaign is that it's pretty on-rails, but in an age of single-player games taking up a minimum …

The amount of different character models, factions, weapons and environment designs is pretty astonishing considering the campaign is mostly a secondary feature in a Call of Duty game, which tend to be more multiplayer and even Zombies focused, but that's what's great about Treyarch, who manages to put a ton of polish on each aspect of their game which makes it even more disappointing that they opted to forgo a single-player in Black Ops 4.

More ballanced multiplayer than in MW2.

Story mode is mediocre at best. You can totally ignore it.

Bought it for the multiplayer. While you still get a whole lot of gadget and weapon variety, annoying stuff like quickscope had been removed, killstreaks now reset on death (which is good), and overall balance is better than in MW2.

Bomb mode is where the game shines - instead of mindlessly spraying, like you could do in deathmatch, you have to cooperate with your teamates, use your gadgets, minimap, listen to footstep sounds, try to flank campers and sometimes just test your reaction to outplay the enemy team, because if you die - you won't respawn.
You'll have to wait for round end spectating. When you're only one alive vs 2-3 enemies (and everyone who died is spectating you), it really gives you that satisfying adrenaline rush.

It's 2017 and there are still some servers alive with BO1 veterans. I have 270 hours in that game and I don't regret it.

Beyond its explosive set pieces, the campaign stands out for how it plays with psychological tension and unreliable narration. The interrogation sequences frame the entire story in a way that keeps you questioning what is real, building toward a twist that genuinely lands. The voice performances elevate the material, especially the dynamic between Mason and Reznov, whose presence adds emotional weight and moral ambiguity to the unfolding conspiracy. It’s a rare case where a military shooter leans heavily into narrative ambition and actually delivers a memorable payoff.

Technically, the PC version holds up well, with solid performance, satisfying weapon feedback, and impactful sound design that makes every firefight feel intense. The OST further enhances the Cold War paranoia vibe, blending orchestral tension with moments of quiet unease. While the campaign isn’t very long, its pacing ensures there’s little filler, and the overall package makes this one of the most complete and influential entries in the franchise.

I played bo1 zombies mode today. Man, it is nostalgic. Finally figured out how to increase the FOV which was awesome. I played bo1 and my first 2 box spins were wonderwaffee and monkey bombs. I feel so lucky. Doing the old strats I used to do with my dad back in the day - running the thompson upgraded and the training paths we took. Man, it's a classic. I had a craving to play it and satisfied it. Was happy with making it to round 28. There's something about the old zombies modes which feel so good. The way the weapons recoil and the way the wonder weapons feel.

I loved the story though and look forward to getting massacred in the sequel.
