Shadow Warrior was developed using Ken Silverman's Build engine and improved on 3D Realms' previous Build engine game, Duke Nukem 3D. Mark Adams ported Shadow Warrior to Mac OS in August 1997. The game's improvements included introduction of true room-over-room situations, the use of 3D voxels instead of 2D sprites for weapons and usable inventory items, transparent water, climbable ladders, and assorted vehicles to drive (some armed with weapons). Although ultra-violent, the game emphasized tongue-in-cheek humor and contained some sexual themes (although less blatantly than in Duke Nukem 3D). A combination of Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior was published by GT Interactive in March 1998, titled East Meets West. Read less

Shadow Warrior: Inoffensive AND Offensive

Note - this includes the provided Twin Dragon and Wanton Destruction expansions.

As one of the later Build engine games, Shadow Warrior doesn't do too much to break the mold, but aesthetically manages to top Duke Nukem 3D's sexism with a boatload of racism.

Lo Wang is a bodyguard for Zilla Enterprises but figures out the president is planning to conquer Japan using demons. After his mentor gets killed, Lo Wang must avenge his death.

From the outset of Lo Wang's very name you know you're in for some uncomfortable times, but the replacement of r's with l's voiced by a white guy and some terrible wisecracks just seal the deal. Badly drawn naked anime girls, dumb jokes in fortune cookies for health, off-color references to nuclear weapons...it has it all.

Terribleness aside, this game is surprisingly standard. The player has a sword for a melee weapon but can use shuriken, a variety of guns, and a couple of slightly more creative weapons such as a demon head and a bleeding heart. The game features some mechanical upgrades such as vehicles and ladders, but is a matter of finding more keys to unlock doors and mowing down whatever enemies are in the way. As for how solid the game is, the main campaign is functioning enough but by the time the player reaches Wanton Destruction, bugs that verge on game-breaking such as disappearing bosses start showing up.

Shadow Warrior is an OK Build engine game but is such a remarkably disgusting thing otherwise that you're better off playing something more entertaining like Blood.

Short Duke Nukem 3D clone

imo this game is nothing special. It's a Duke3D clone that feels at times like a mod, and like a sort of something 'we just did it because we could/was fun' rather than commercial enterprise. It's good and has style and feel complete, it is however short. (i would say just the right length with under 25 maps, excluding Wanton Destruction add on, which as available for free) Lo Wang is a funny guy. His backstory is pretty absurd. He is very much a duke sort of character concept with snappy one liners/remarks, etc.

Maps are nice. City areas are cool in this and feel similar to the Red light district map in duke3d (my fav map) There are also other maps stylized in likeness of some duke3d maps.

Weapons are okay, somewhat odd. I found myself really not likeing some of them. The shotgun has a nice burst fire mode (tap the weapon # key to switch/cycle through modes) which can really help with strong foes. The rocket launcher has some good modes and upgrades too. Didn't like the rest as much.

Difficulty is harder in this than duke3d
