I have played this game many times but it is not until now that I finally manage to finish it and let me tell you this game is outrageously hard!

Game #21/200 Battle Network 2 is a magnificent game, but as I try to reflect on it, not a lot is coming to mind for me. It’s very similar to BN1 in terms of graphics, sound, and gameplay. It fixes all of the little gripes from the previous title (escaping battles is much easier for example) and it adds in some powerful armors that you can obtain that enhance the fun and add an additional layer of depth/strategy. The story is better — longer, more exposition and interactions among the cast, more interesting — but still nothing mind blowing. The simplicity of it actually does the game a favor, as it’s a lean experience at about 17-18 hours including side quests (another new gameplay addition). The quirkiness of the dialogue and the plot’s fast-paced events (which are often made interesting not necessarily by the nature of the plot but really by how charming the overall setting and appearance of the game is) are really what you’re looking for in this title. It’s very nostalgic, but I think a newcomer could certainly “get it” just the same as someone like me who feverishly awaited opening the game up on Christmas of 2002. After playing the first two titles, I almost feel like they could’ve been a prologue to a much more expansive game in this fantastic little world Capcom has created. My understanding is that BN3 is where the plot really ramps up, so we’ll see in a few months or whenever I play that what my feelings are. Nonetheless this is a lovely title, slightly better than its predecessor that I also loved, and all of my comments directed toward that game basically apply here.

Pros
  • Better map design. The maps in both the real world and net world are more diverse and interesting. It's much easier to navigate and they have names. This game still doesn't have a map, but I won't list it as a negative this time just because I didn't find navigation as difficult.

Pros
  • Better map design. The maps in both the real world and net world are more diverse and interesting. It's much easier to navigate and they have names. This game still doesn't have a map, but I won't list it as a negative this time just because I didn't find navigation as difficult.
  • I like the introduction of style changing. It offers more customization to change the way you play. I do wish you could hold more than 2 at once and that they weren't so tedious to obtain and level up, but I say it's a net positive.
  • Battles are more diverse. More varied enemies and battlefields. The first game only had a default grid, while this game has battlefields with special effects like magnetism, cracks, and lava on the floor. It makes the random battles feel a bit less monotonous, but it does make it harder when there's a combo that is really difficult to deal with.
  • There seems to be more of an emphasis on chip combos. Not in the advanced program way, but in how they interact with each other (e.g., rock cube + punch)
  • Fast travel in the Net world is much more convenient with the teleporters
Cons
  • A lot of this game is padding. The second last chapter is particularly bad with this. Even if you don't include the optional request board, the main story feels like aimlessly walking back and forth doing fetch quests. It gets tedious and the game is worse for it.
  • Not a big fan of the story. One aspect is how lax this world seems with criminals, especially since these criminals are literally trying to destroy the world and have committed murder.
  • I thought that the enemy's would start doing reasonable damage since health doesn't regen anymore, but that really isn't the case. A lot of enemy's still hit super hard and there aren't a lot of invincibility frames given to you. It really sucks when you're wandering around the net and you lose progress because you randomly encounter a boss ghost you weren't prepared for.
Final thoughts

Better than the first, but I still have issues with it. The padding feels so egregious, I think if the game were half its actual length, I'd consider it a much better game.

Looking into mods that make the "DLC" accessible without extra accessories for the later games in the series, I found this. It may be one of the strangest mods I've ever seen just based on the amount of work it must have taken for such a nonsensical joke. I love it.

Just started this. Already I'm not liking it. One of the things that I liked about the first was that you healed to full after every battle. This allowed you to experiment more and not worry about dying. They took that away, and now you keep your health after every fight. Bummer. It's already made battles less fun. More difficult, …

More difficult, sure, but less fun.
