Uhm, I'm not sure how to feel about Dead Cells... you have to spend way too much time to reach the final boss after each run, and I found ranged weapons + turret-like powers to be OP against most enemies, to the point that the game felt like it was mostly "not ready" for a hit-and-run ranged approach. Oh and the boss fights themselves are dissapointing.
Honestly for the majority of my playthrough I was just thinking Oh man this is just an inferior Rogue Legacy uh? and the only thing that I really like about Dead Cells is how fast you can move, and that's it.
Regardless, it was still a fun game, but I beat the final boss once and unistalled it... not interested in playing it again.

mixed feelings on this. My friend really likes this game and has gone a lot further, but after a dozen or so playthroughs i cant get beyond the third area. any tips to have a better time or am i doing something wrong? It's a neat idea but the grinding in this just sucks.

i get the feeling this is for many a love/hate thing (though hate is a strong word) maybe its a matter of equipment or somethng i just havent figured out.

Im laughing very hard because i remember 1-2 years ago i poured dozens upon dozens of hours into Dead cells and never managed to actually beat the final boss, but after a two year break i booted it up and managed to beat it first try XD

I don't know how I'm supposed to beat the Hand. I had a really good run yesterday, good traps and my playing was top notch. Then I got to the Hand and he decimated me. I might have to watch a playthrough. The amount of bombs he throws, spikes in the pits, elite enemies he deploys (didn't get that far this time), and the shear size of him makes the fight brutal. Bruuuutal.
So I ask you fancy Grouvers since I'm getting a little burnt out from Bloodborne and Dead Cells, what are some good casual games (like Animal Crossing) I can play on PS4 or Vita? Thank you!

The game recycles the same content repeatedly, and due to the very straightforward nature of the game, this repetition detracts from the value instead of adding to it. One of the ways Dead Cells tries to cover this up is through the incorporation of a sprawling unlock system; unfortunately, most of the unlocks don't add anything interesting to the game, especially since the in-run looting and progression is so mindless and bland. Item design and progression being weak force Dead Cells to rely on really one main thing to sustain attention, but this is something that it does extremely well: The dexterity element. Over the course of gameplay, Dead Cells regularly supplies the player with a string of dexterity-related challenges which are very satisfying and don't have too much down-time between them. This takes a fair bit longer than the rest of the game to get old, although it inevitably does as practice makes the fights progressively more mindless. Overall, Dead Cells can be fun for a few hours, but it isn't worth paying an especially high amount of attention to at the end of the day.

i played two runs of this last night. it reminds me of the exact same kind of elation and woe that Darkest Dungeon wrought my life.

It has enough combat depth that it utilizes with dodges, parries, and spacing to be a good amount of fun, with an especially competent grasp of these fundamentals. Enemies force out quick thinking and reactionary attacks, with some strategy in terms of approaching any fight. There's a good amount of different weapons and cooldown abilities with decent depth, and all but a few super safe options are interesting. The bosses are a bit hit or miss, but they're well done as well, especially the final boss.
I've only finished the game on normal but I'm already sort of satisfied, which is part of its main problem. The gameplay peaks rather quickly in terms of your options, and it starts to slowly turn into trying to do things no hit or similar challenge aspects that expand out the game's content. Replaying it continuously is the name of the game for people (not me) so there's definitely enough in store to make this a worthy recommend. (7.5/10)

This game really tickles that "just one more game" part of my brain. However, as a mere mortal who doesn't memorize/count frames in videogames, it feels like it'll take quite a bit of grinding to gain access to weapons & skills strong enough to beat that Hand of the King mofo. Then I'll need a lucky roll of the RNG. …

I'm too old to git gud.

Only a couple hours of playtime in, but I'm already really digging the rhythm of this game. The bow & arrow that drops huge lakes of fire that I got on my second attempt seemed a bit overpowered (but also fun). Shame that I had to quit out of the game due to adult responsibilities.

Decided to get Gamepass as my X Box One is my most neglected console and wanted to try some games out. Played this for a couple of hours and I can see why people like it. Gameplay is addictive and I like the art style. That being said I don't know if it' a game I can sink a ton of time into. Even with the positives it is a roguelike and for whatever reason I burn out on them very quick. I'll give it another go at sometime I'm sure though.

A remarkably fun and fast-paced rogue-like. Takes a while to get used to, and is lacking in a massive degree of mechanical depth, but an extremely fun game with a lot of 'pick-up-and-play' value

Dead Cells mixes elements from two different genres that are starting to oversaturate to create its own genre: the roguevania, offering refreshing originality. All of its very well-executed aspects create an experience like no other.
