Emulation is that thing that allows you to replay Ridge Racer thirty years later, check out both the Arcade and PS1 versions and realize for the first time how different they were in terms of movement, controls, response, difficulty. And I have to say that, even though the PS1 version is kind of a miracle, in the end I think I prefer how smooth drifting is in the arcade version. I love it so much that I ended up playing it every now and then for weeks and I would never have expected it. Particularly because I’ve never been a Ridge Racer fan, I was too deep into Virtua Racing. So I guess this was a nice discovery.

The simplest of simple

Looking back at this game with the perspective of XXI century gaming, might be really underwhelming. The game has only one track with variations and 4 cars to choose from, that's it really. Looking back at this game with the perspective of XXI century gaming, might be really underwhelming. The game has only one track with variations and 4 cars to choose from, that's it really. But I don't see this as a bad trait. For me this game is just one hour experience when I can just jump straight to the race within few seconds and have great time. Trust me, I just wanted to try Ridge Racer for 15 minutes and stayed for almost 2 hours, playing over and over the same track. Also the big plus of the game is great soundtrack, in which every song is a real banger. So if you like retro arcade racing games, and want to have fun it's a no-brainer.

Well... It has aged.

I'm going to be a bit generous with this game being as it was one of the first 3D Racing games out there, but don't attack me for saying: I've seen better racing games made on an Android phone.

I got this for freakin' cheap and no wonder why! The game overall has aged too much. I might as well add that any mediocre PS1 racing game released from 1997 and onward may have been a better racing game than this one.

If you still got this game and you love it then cool! have fun with it. If you're going all new then I recommend you to skip it. If you got this game with some other PS1 games for cheap, then it's not a bad purchase. and it's still valuable.

this is life

this game looks like a million bucks. does r4 have better graphics, better design, more courses, more cars, more "stylish", way more to sink your teeth into? yes on all fronts. i understand why evverybody and their mother says 'oh boy you just gotta play r4, its the best ridge racer.' theyre right. but i'm playing ridge racer. plug in …

this game looks like a million bucks. does r4 have better graphics, better design, more courses, more cars, more "stylish", way more to sink your teeth into? yes on all fronts. i understand why evverybody and their mother says 'oh boy you just gotta play r4, its the best ridge racer.' theyre right. but i'm playing ridge racer. plug in the neGcon, stay in first person mode, and just ride those highways. its as good as life gets. the song "ridge racer" rules and the super annoying thumping music with the uncleared kraftwerk sample when you finish the race is even better. the announcer is unhinged... the day/night cycle is cool, the helicopter is sick, the pac man on the hotel lights is literally always charming. i love everything about ridge racer. forget picturing yourself in 1994 and this bloiwng you away, play this in whatever year it is and think 'oh wow..i would buy a new console to play games like this' because thats what i did and thats why im writing this review.

why am i not giving this five stars? i dont know. its a perfect game but i dont wanna be mr. five stars. if you think i should give it five stars, play it and give it five stars yourself. you can be mr. five stars.
