I realized I never fully beat Pokemon gen 1 as a kid. I beat the elite four on my brother's save, but I never finished the game myself. I had always thrown away the idea of catching em all since it's so time consuming, and my typical pokemon playthrough involves catching like 10 pokemon early in the game, getting attached to them, and beating the game with them.
I grabbed the Pokemon 151 romhack which lets you catch all 151 pokemon on one game and figured I'd give it a shot. Thanks to fast forward, save staves, and the romhack, I was able to catch em all!
I was so impressed with how good this is for a game boy game, and it made me realize having the two versions is actually an interesting game design mechanic as it encourages trading with others, instead of purely solo play (it's also a great cash grab.)
My original review based on my memory of this game as a kid was 3/5, I'm updating to it a 4/5. That said, if I was playing on original hardware, I might give it a 3/5 because of how slow the game can be.

Well where do I beginning with this review I have been the biggest Pokemon fan since as long as I can remember and this game pokemon blue was the very first game I ever played and the very first game I ever completed.I enjoy the experience immensely every time I go back to this game and I will always have a special place in my heart. It may sound unfair to alot of people but this for definitely gets a 5 start review from me.
I know for new fans to the game this maybe unplayable now because of all the rerelease but I would still recommend anyone to give it ago.
My hall of Famers

I love pokemon red, and it is definity fun to play through and everyone should at one point, but the series has definitly improved since. Red/Blue is one of my most replayed games so I know the jist of what you need to do, but for someone just getting into pokemon the first game is not a good starting place since how little of it is narrated and how much you would need to guess or look up. It is also missing many QoL features later games have added. Honestly the first time I played when it came out this would've been a 4 or 5 star review but having played most of the games and having played it so much throughout the years, it just doesn't hold up like it used to

Lana: Honestly more fun than I expected going back again, but it has many flaws (like having limited item space and using HMs from the menu everytime) so 7.5/10
Rodrigo: fuck having to go to the menu to use HMs, also not enough Brock, but good game ngl 7/10
Disclaimer: we crossed out the name because we used a very bad racist word :( sorry.
A lot has already been said about these classic original games.
Their core formula and mechanics are incredibly addicting and fun. The music still stands as some of the best in the franchise, and I really enjoy that the rival in this game is truly dislikable and rewarding to beat.
There are things people frequently gloss over about these games though.
First, the end game is a little dull, after you beat the Elite 4 you catch the legendaries and Mewtwo and you are essentially done. Sure you can level up to 100, but why?
The battling system has some core flaws, that were corrected in later versions of the game. For instance, Psychic type is extremely overpowered, with no true weakness beyond itself (there are no ghost moves in the core game, and all ghost and most bug pokemon are also poison, making them weak to psychic).
The attacks aren't tied to stats on a move to move basis, but rather on a type basis, making some Pokemon pretty terrible.
A lot of these issues were slowly corrected as the series went on. If you want to take a trip down nostalgia lane, but also play the best Pokemon …

My first RPG game i ever played all the way through and i was only like 7 at the time. These games were so good, the music, the stories. I could talk about pokemon red, blue and yellow for hours. I'd give it 5 but the only reason i can't is because as an adult some the typing situation in this game is not great lol, but overall still one of my favorites of all time
I expected really bad things by replaying Red since all you can read on the internet is how badly it aged.
I gotta say, it really held up quite well, coming from an (oldschool) Pokémon fan.
Graphics: 7/10 Let's be honest, the graphics didn't age particularly well. However, I really think it has its own charm, hence why I'd give it 7/10 in that regard. The overworld tends to look quite bland most of the time, the reason being the limitations of the OG Gameboy but the Pokémon design is top notch for the most part.
Story: 4/10 What exactly is there to say really? It's a Pokémon game. This franchise is notoriously bad in terms of story and this game is no exception. In comparison to other Pokémon games near that era, it still has some cool story bits such as the Pokémon Mansion logs and the Mewtu-Mew saga, Lavender town, Team Rocket being a real threat with a kick ass boss and an amazing rival! Other than that though, pretty mediocre.
Sound: 09/10 The music in this game is absolutely state of the art. Basically all the songs were reused/remixed in newer entries and the reason for that …

Sound: 09/10 The music in this game is absolutely state of the art. Basically all the songs were reused/remixed in newer entries and the reason for that is clear: absolute baller soundtrack! The sound effects are also very memorable, albeit annoying sometimes.
Gameplay: 8/10 In the gameplay department, Pokémon Red nails the Pokémon formula we all love and want. It's rather barebones in comparison to newer entries (no natures, no abilities, no held items) but for a first entry it's really fun and engaging. What I absolutely appreciate about Pokémon as an RPG is the fact that random encounters are mostly avoidable and not overbearing - take note old Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games! There are glaring issues here too though: Most importantly, the movesets for the Pokémon absolutely SUCK! This really annoyed me because it could've been fixed so easily yet it was released this way. Another point are the many many bugs and glitches (Crit-calculation, opponents not having PPs, catch rates are messed up, some moves don't work properly such as Focus Energy, OHKO moves being weird as well). Since this was the first entry, there was also no special split (SpAtk - SpDef) which meant that Pokémon with a high Special stat (basically all Psychic-type Pokémon) were OP af since the special stat applied both for defense, making the mons extremely tanky, as well as for offense. Speaking of Psychic-types... yeah, the type has literally no counters and you could sweep the whole game with a Kadabra spamming Psychic all the way - feels kinda cheap. My last gripe is a personal one and is especially in regards to the 100% completion over at Retroachievements: the safari zone catch mechanic absolutely sucks omg!!!!
Overall: 07/10 I had a lot of fun completing this game of my childhood. It definitely deserves its legendary status and should be experienced by every Pokémon fan at least once. It still has glaring weaknesses and remains behind the second gen games for me personally though.
I really don't know how to express, the joy I had as a child, playing this game, together with my little friends.... I still remember when I was the first in my neighborhood, to be able to discover the so-called MISSIGNO, in order to get endless pokèmon balls-rare candies and so much more. Thank you nintendo for this WONDERFUL memory.
1 Sentece review - Pokémon Red
Aside from the classic designs of the creatures themselves this game is outdated and I'd dare say unplayable in its original form.
I was going to give this game a 4 stars because I find it so slow to go back to, but who am I kidding, this game set up the foundation for the Whole Pokemon Universe, they started it out strong with 150 (151?) great Pokemon designs and the Battle System is still sound.
I was actually playing the Pikachu version on my 3DS the other day and played it quite far, capturing and collecting Pokemon is as fulfilling as its always been.
There isn't much to say about these games people don't already know. The original pokemon games Red and Blue started the whole formula (which was MUCH improved on in later generations) This game would have been tougher to beat if it wasn't so broken. The infamous missingno. cheat allows for unlimited Rare Candys, and I'm not usually one for cheating but I took advantage of this just so I can put this game behind me and start playing others. It was nostalgic bliss, but the newer gen games have spoiled me with better movesets and typing advantages. One huge difference red and blue has is the critical hit ratio being tied directly to speed, making fast pokes with high-crit moves such as Charizard or Persian OP (I chose Charmander for this playthrough for that reason, even though fire-types get no love in Gen 1)
Though slightly dated it's still tons of fun and very enjoyable, especially if you're wearing your nostalgia goggles. There's no denying this game revolutionized the RPG system and is one of the (if not THE) top selling franchises on handheld consoles. Score: B+
To me, Red/Blue is still the best Pokemon game. I understand other entries expanded the fighting mechanics, improved graphics, and lengthened the story, but Red/Blue will always be my favorite and have the best generation of Pokemon & most iconic starters.
My favourite generation is 2 I absolutely adore gens 6 and 7 But i can say whole heartedly that no pokemon game yet has topped red and blue I have played these games many many times and enjoyed each playthrough. There are flaws from grinding to pokemon availability late game. But Its challenging difficulty, fun ways to manshup your teams, unique characters and plot and awesome soundtrack all mix well with fun and engaging battles to create a pokemon game that stands strong to this day and that i definitely still recommend as an opening game for players.
It's hard to explain how significant of a collective cultural moment Pokemon was in 1998. It was an all-encompassing hype monster that took the world by storm and I was right there in the thick of it. Yes, I played the games. Yes, I collected the cards, the toys, the coins, the food products... Yes, I saw the movie 6 times in theaters. And I loved every second of it. The video game that started it all transcends culture, time and existence itself. Pokemon 4ever #1.
I played this game through a long time ago, but it was just as entertaining the second time around.
The graphics are as much - or little - as can be expected from Game Boy Color, but it's not the look that's so captivating; it's the idea.
Set off on a Pokémon journey with your starter Pokémon (Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander), catch wild Pokémon, train them (trade them), make them evolve, grow and lean new moves. Challenge gym leaders and battle other trainers.
A few times the gym battles were a pain. Well, the second one for me, and then the final battle against the Elite Four. After a few losses you start to see where you went wrong - and what to do better the next time around.
The story also consists of small tasks: take an item to someone else somewhere else. Gain something in return. Talk to other characters to gain information. Solve problems. Defeat Team Rocket (which is far more bad-ass in this game than it is in the anime).
Pokémon Red seemed too short in the end. After defeating Elite Four and becoming Pokémon master, there isn't really much to do anymore, other than catch …

Pokémon Red seemed too short in the end. After defeating Elite Four and becoming Pokémon master, there isn't really much to do anymore, other than catch the Pokémon you haven't yet, and maybe battle friends if you are able to link with them.
One downside of the whole Pokémon franchise is that you can't catch 'em all in one game - thus various versions and the couple of Pokémon that are "unique" in each. If you can't trade with anyone, you can't get them, but that's okay. You've got almost everything you can from the game after you've finished the storyline.
I like this game. It isn't perfect, there could be more, and sometimes doing the same thing over and over again gets to your nerves, but overall, if you're into this kind of thing, it's a joy ride from start to finish.
And it makes you want to play the other games in the series as well!
Its realistically inaccurate but I feel like playing Gameboy by Streetlamp is a universal experience.
CHONKY PIKACHU ON THE NINTENDO NEWS APP. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN ON 02.27.2026??? WILL THEY FINALLY RELEASE THE OLD POKEMON GAMES ON THE SWITCH???? OR WILL I BE DISAPPOINTED YET AGAIN????
Hoping for the best but expecting the absolute worst such as more mobile game events.
I liked this video as a kid. I felt a lot of disconnect with the new Pokemon games. I think a lot of that was fueled from not being able to own any Pokemon games after Gold/Silver so I felt left behind and all the new Pokemon and mechanics were overwhelming and I couldn't relate to any of it.
This is definitely a bit cringe now but it's got that old Youtube charm.
This is fun for Pokémon fans. The incomparable BDG will be hosting an official Pokemon trivia gameshow. Exciting stuff!
#Sponsored I'm the host of the very first official Pokémon game show! They approved me! Against all odds! It's gonna be so much fun! Come through! pkmn.news/gameshow #PokemonGameShow

The game that started it all. It really hasn't aged well but somehow it is still fun to go back and just think that there were only 150 pokemon. SQUIRTLE SUPREMACY!! This is when pokemon designs were at its best. Its a bit clunky today but the magic is still there.
Started replaying this on my emulator handheld because I realized I don't think I ever beat it straight through. I was so young and I think I beat the elite four on my brother's save, but never played it all the way through.
I forgot how good the music is for a gameboy good, and it has a such a distinct visual aesthetic. Such a comfy little game.
I'm using the Blue 151 rom hack that lets you catch all the pokemon in the one game without trading but otherwise claims to be a vanilla experience. I'm not sure if I want to fill out the pokedex but it's nice to have the option.
Pokemon and claymation are a match made in Heaven.
Trouble is doubled
The evils of truth and love
Team Rocket blasts off
-A Jessie and James Haiku
Completion Status:
Beat the Elite Four and became the Champion.
Missing pokédex completion.
Completeled main story yay time to complete as much of the Pokedex as I can
My hall of Fame team

I have now played 7 hour's and 20 mins of pokemon blue. Just about to tackle the s.s. Anne and then the 3rd gym leader falling is love with this game all over again this is my current team.
I started replaying pokemon blue yesterday 2 hours and 15 minutes in already and I must well spent. This game holds so many memories for me. I went for my favorite starter Pokemon Charmander and have just got my first badge.
I Have played this game more times than I count but feel that I should play again this time to record hear and I feel it should be as well as it was the very first game I ever played so it only seams right that it be the first game I also record.
Ps will be playing pokemon blue as again that was the first one I ever owed
