This wasn't supposed to come in until tomorrow, but I got a notification this morning that it's out for delivery today. c:

@Sir_Laguna, I think this is a discourse that actually kind of rubs me the wrong way, and one I'm seeing coming from some journalists:

Astro Bot Has One Level That Puts Mario To Shame

PlayStation’s ‘Astro Bot’ Beats Mario at His Own Game

Astro Bot is the ultimate PS5 platformer — and its rivals even Mario's best games

I know that Walker's piece (first link) is tongue-in-cheek, but I've seen the sentiment that Astro Bot gives Mario games a run for their money from multiple outlets, and I can't help but feel that this type of discourse feeds into the ongoing console war mentality. Instead of being excited that we have multiple fun games to play, there is this steak of competition that undercuts any kind of platform-agnostic celebration of gaming. It's not enough that Astro Bot is a fun game, it has to be better than Mario, or provide competition to Mario, to be worthwhile. I find that kind of comparative evaluation limiting, and even shortsighted. I know that comparing platformers to established platformers is a shorthand method of communicating to readers, but I think it restricts the discourse around the game to comparisons rather than more robust analysis.

This is one of the best Nintendo games I've ever played and Nintendo didn't even make it

Astro's Playroom was the first game I taught my niece to play when she was 3 and she probably played it like 40 hours over time. Needless to say, she's pretty excited about coming over this weekend.

Actual nitpick that really bothers me. First world spoilers: So after the boss, there's an Ape Escape Level. You become Spike and try to catch the bots as monkeys. Actual nitpick that really bothers me. First world spoilers: So after the boss, there's an Ape Escape Level. You become Spike and try to catch the bots as monkeys. My main issue here is that it doesn't control like Ape Escape. No using the right stick to swing your net. Using right trigger to swing it instead. Right stick to control the camera, now the normal conteols designed for this level would be better fitting since you meed to homogenize the controls, but it would lack a major part of what made Ape Escape stand out. Ape Escape was a game that was a showcase of the DualShock with its two analog sticks and I just feel that Ape Escape wasn't celebrated enough to an extent that I wanted. I guess I just wanted Aspbi to go all out on the Ape Escape level.

Finished this today. There was no Gitaroo Man in this so I don't feel seen. /s (John Bloodborne and Joe Kurr are always nice to me though) Therefore, it's not my GOTY.

Played through the first level. I love how rewarding it is to be curious. I’ve barely touched the surface and already feel so delighted.

I was convinced to preorder Astro Bot last night. It didn't take much as I loved Astro's Playroom. Before I play the sequel, I'm gonna do some cleanup and experience the post-launch updates they released recently on the previous game so I may not get around to playing Astro Bot today but I will soon. I'm very excited. :))

The question that keeps lurking in my mind as the release approaches is this: will it really beat best game of 2024 Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom?

We'll see once it comes out. And I for one, am excited and a bit nervous that there's a chance that it could.

WISHES DO COME TRUE GUYS!

I knew this game would be awesome, but based on what others are saying, I didn't expect it be this awesome!

Hopefully loads of people will buy this so Sony can take the hint to make more games like this!

This is gonna be the best platformer game in history. I have zero doubts about that.
