Remake of Super Mario 64

All right, let's get this out of the way: This DS remake of the Nintendo 64 classic to end all classics really butchers its controls. It was a clever idea to use the touchscreen for analog movement, but it's bizarre to play a version of Super Mario 64... the game that showed the world how 3D character movement should feel... that makes movement so gosh-darn unpleasant. I gave up trying back in 2005.
But it's 2020, and in the short list of things going right this year is that no one's taking away our 3DS family of consoles, which have circle pads. Playing today on my New Nintendo 2DS XL, movement still didn't feel great, but after about thirty stars I stopped noticing. And that's when I started appreciating everything this remake does right.

The game's visuals are a tremendous upgrade. The additional stars are really fun and don't feel out of place. Starting the game with Yoshi was an odd choice, but ultimately the extra characters add more variety and depth to the adventure. Overall, this is probably the grandest portable 3-D Mario adventure until Super Mario Odyssey arrived almost a decade and a half later, and that's …

Most games would not deserve the time I put into accepting this game's controls. But most games are not Super Mario 64, and certainly not a portable version of Super Mario 64 that feels definitive in almost every other respect. In the end, the fun I had far outweighed the frustration.

The last Mario game in the DS section of my retrospective just so happens to be a launch title for the system. I thought I'd save it for last since it is a remake of one of the most important games ever made.
Anyway, Super Mario 64 DS is a Mario game that always alluded me because I never got to own a DS as a kid because my parents thought it was the same thing as an iPad. That being said, Super Mario 64 DS was a HUGE deal when it was released, and well... In 2023 I don't see many people playing it
This was a full-on Remake of Super Mario 64 that could be played on the go, added mini-games, 30 extra stars, new levels, and 3 new characters... So you would think this would be the definitive version to play it... But it's not and after playing it I can see why.

This game is the same exact story as the original, Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach and steals the Power Stars, and Mario must collect them. However, you don't start as Mario... You start as one of the 3 new characters to play as... Yoshi. The further you go the more characters you unlock
Yoshi - Can eat and use eggs as weapons, melt ice with fire, and has a flutter jump
Mario - The same as the last game except now he can turn into a balloon and float
Luigi - Can't wall jump but has the highest jump, can turn invisible, and even walk on water
Wario - Can break black bricks and turn into metal.
I think the new characters are cool and all but if you've played the original you will find yourself sticking with Mario for the most part
My main issue with this game is the controls... It just doesn't work with the DS and makes moves that were effortless in the original... Sometimes feel impossible. I got all 150 Stars and towards the end I was just done with it
I feel like the reason why not many people play this game is that it is just too radically different from the original... Why do you think people still speedrun the original? Because that game has been studied and experimented with forever. When you add 3 new characters, 30 new stars, remove the BLJ, and everything else that makes Super Mario 64 what it is, you lose a lot of longevity... Is Super Mario 64 DS a bad game? No, but if I ever wanted to play Super Mario 64... I'd just play the original
Would Lightly Recommend
3/5
A very strong contender for my favorite game of all time.
The d-pad really butchers the original's controls in my opinion, but if you can play it on a 3ds, I'd say it's a pretty solid remake and that it can bring a new experience that is about as good as the original.
I loved the original game for N64 and wasn't sure how they could possibly pull it off on a smaller screen yet somehow it works. In fact, this is actually a big improvement on the original game in so many ways. Some fun new levels and no more camera issues.
But slightly ruined by being on the Nintendo DS.
The additional content, some of which is believed to be material left out of the original Mario 64, is great to have, but if only this game were ported to a modern console and brought back the smooth N64 controls, it'd be vastly improved. Also feels a lot slower than the original, with all the character swapping and all the cinematics in between (though having their hats readily available in some missions when you need them can be pretty convenient). One of the best parts of Mario 64 is that after the opening cutscene, BOOM, play the game however you want. Earn your stars and make progress in ANY order you want, learn all the secrets to earn them quickest. To ME, when the new game fixed some of the shortcomings with the "easy" stages of the first games and made them less open-ended in how to complete them, that KINDA spoils things for me.
Still worth a BUY, if you're a fan of the original.
Even with a 3DS circle pad the control is torture, but it had me hooked coming back for more until I defeated Bowser. My favorite character is Luigi. With his insane backflip/spin I can go almost anywhere and find cool shortcuts. I cannot bring myself to collect every star in this version though. If I ever play this again it will be on a romhack that combines the best of both versions if such a thing exists.
Super Mario 64, as we all know, is one of the greatest platformers of all time. It set a new standard for platformers in 3d. The DS port is fantastic. I really enjoyed playing as the other characters. The addition of stars that you can only get with certain characters was great! The graphics are refined and look even better on the smaller screen (I am partial to handhelds anyhow and hate having to sit in front of a TV to enjoy video games).
If you've never played the game, this is a great way to do it. If you have played it, pick up this port. It's so much fun to power up and nab a star while your on a bus ride (or pick up the first 30 while your on a flight!) Mario 64 and the star collection is ideal for portable playability!
This game on the Wii U virtual console is a slog to play and that mainly comes down to the controls. I loved this game when I played it on the DS so I downloaded it on my Wii U, immediately regretted it. You CANNOT and I mean CANNOT control this game with the Wii U’s gamepad. They didn’t have to make it like this, the Wii U has two screens which is PERFECT for DS games! Moral of the story, DO NOT, and I mean DO NOT play this game on the Wii U virtual console.
Voto: 9.8/10
My first time playing Mario 64 was through this game. After playing both versions, the original is definitely superior. The controls for this one are weird since you have to use the D-pad. But the addition of Luigi, Wario and Yoshi is very welcome and the extra stars and levels are really fun. The minigames are also super fun and quirky.
When the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection came out on Switch, I got all the stars in Super Mario 64 for the first time. I haven’t done that for Super Mario 64 DS before, so I decided I’d give it a shot. Turns out I must’ve already had this thought before because I already had 130+ lol I continued from that and eventually got all the stars for this port too. Some pros: improved camera, better looking models, easier wall jumping, and portability. Some cons: worse controls than the original and the 4 character mechanic is a bit tedious. It’s alleviated a bit by the hats that can be found in levels.
The real bargain is, do you want the game with the bad controls but nearly double the amount of content, or if you want the game with the fun controls and sacrifice half of the content. I know, hot take, but 64 DS is better.
My first play through ever of this game never played the n64 version but I'm hooked :D I'm at 34 stars
Well I have 21/150 stars :D completely done with the first 2 Worlds.
Time to do thisssss. The nostalgia. Never played this version
