A NES-style Action Buffett That Earns it's cool cartridge design

Ultimate is worth check out as it has good design. And funny, you wouldn't expect an unlicensed game to be this decent. But even better is how this game encapsulates a smorgasbord buffet type feel of action NES fare lumped together, for each map or area is a different game mode. In a way, this makes it perfect for nostalgia seekers. You'll likely find it in Ultimate stuntman, a fast paced short attention span time waster that really isnt meant to be played beyond the first three levels. (after that you more or less go through the same levels over again in much harder progression)

The Cart:
If you had one of these you will never forget the cart. Odd shape, funky toggle switches on the back to fool the Nintendo Police and of course the most obvious: GOLD. Yes, All the camerica carts were gold and they even had a star cutout in the box to let the whole world know you were getting a special gold cart... (Nintendo no doubt was not a fan of the fact that their plans to create a sacred triforce, were thwarted by this evil canadian company... Think about it! Now the sacred …

(Nintendo no doubt was not a fan of the fact that their plans to create a sacred triforce, were thwarted by this evil canadian company... Think about it! Now the sacred games were made suddenly all the more cheap to be forced to rub shoulders with such unlicensed heresy in the game racks of america's youth. Those damn Canadians if they aren't hoarding yoga pants they are mass producing sacred gold carts. XD.)

The music is cool, perhaps the UKish origin's of Codemasters might have something to do with the Very C64 sounding music in it. It's warbly and buzzy like demoscene music, I really like it. I can't recall hearing this sort of sound on another Nes title.

A lot of these game modes easily beat the games that are well known in which they are based on. Spy Hunter is a terribly hard and imo not really the best game. But this? This is fun whippy frantic and chaotic. you can smash your car into a wall and keep going, pump more nitro, etc. You can drive really fast to the perfect point of not being able to see. you can lose control and have random results, sometimes going into a moat, sometimes hitting a hostile foot soldier. This is exactly what I would want to see in my unlicensed cart: 'Stolen' inetellectual proprty of a classic made a bit better. And the fact it basically plays like a series of what we would now call minigames? Even better

The side scrolling action stages are perhaps a weaker point, somewhat bland but even here the game has decent control and rules a player can go on. And the control plays better than plenty of 2d action games on nes. Just think of all those games made by acclaim, ljn, data east, you often can get either really difficult controls, ruthless difficulty, or annoying progression puzzles.

Could have been Five stars if there was a bonus mode for the bomb defusal puzzles (tetris style marathon?) and maybe some stronger 2d stuff involving being able to time your jumps so as to emulate a bit of megaman or whomp em. I got all the way to the final boss using save states (finally sat down and did it) and couldnt get further due to the sheer climb in difficulty felt sad that the game is just trying to kill you by the end for whatever reason. the boss doesn't but might as well have infinite life.

Would play this again time to time as I always like the game and still do, though i'm a little sad that it can't be beaten.
