Big Caveat : I only played a single game, v2.8.2, no DLC
Hard to fault as a space-based 4X game but for me it suffers from the same problems that many space-based strategy games have:

There was a lot to like as well, of course. The races felt distinct and the AI was above average for this kind of game. Diplomacy and warfare felt significant and meaningful. The UI and graphics are excellent and the game was easier to pick up than I expected. There's a lot of depth without complexity for complexity's sake and the various mechanisms are well balanced. I was engaged while I played but just not deeply engaged.
Overall, great space 4X game but I think the genre is just fundamentally less engaging that games like Civ, EU4 etc.
3.5 stars, but 4.5 if you love space-based 4X.
Great strategy game that lets you roleplay a galactic leader, form alliance, expand and explore. as you play you unravel mysteries and create stories.
Truly marvelous. a lot of DLC to keep things fresh. You can take as much time as you need or speed things up if you want to. Great for those with not amazing APM!
If you like strategy games definitely check it out.
My wife plays 4x games endlessly, mostly Civ6 on iPad. I've always found them fun but for some reason don't get sucked in. I generally play through the game once (which of course takes many hours) and then am done. That was the case with Stellaris. I was looking for a 4x set in space and played once through this and Endless Space 2. I think I actually preferred the later but the music in Stellaris is better so I'd actually silence the music and play this soundtrack on Spotify. Still, I love that the developer has continued to support this game even 5 years after launch with regular major releases coming periodically and expanding to more platforms. For me, while the space backgrounds do look really pretty, I just can't get into the interface as much when mostly what you're interacting with are little arrows and connected dots. So can't give it 5 stars. But the gameplay strategy and mechanics are rock solid, so I can totally understand why this game is so highly reviewed.
Intro
I loved Europa Universalis III (grand strategy), Endless Space (4X) and Galactic Civilizations II (4X). All of those have their own problems but they're generally engaging. Stellaris is not. Some positives first.
Positives
The race-design options are truly impressive. You can pick from a variety of traits, government types, philosophical leaning, et cetera. You can be undying robots, a hive mind or a race that eats the enemy. There are neat options for your starting planet too, like it being post-apocalyptic or pre-apocalyptic. If the rest of the game was half as fun as this it'd be amazing.
The game also features semi-randomised research options which make research feel a bit less stale than Endless Space or GalCiv.
Poor Design
This game is what i call "pause-based". There's probably a proper word for it but it means it's real-time but you can pause at any point and keep playing. Surveys, research, building and the like all take a certain amount of time. Generally you want to play on the highest speed because otherwise it would take forever to get anywhere.
Here's the problem. There's no autopause other than for events. There's no automation option for explorer ships that …

Here's the problem. There's no autopause other than for events. There's no automation option for explorer ships that actually automates them - anomalies/research have to be done by hand. Messages for newly available options are limited. On planets you can build a building for every 5 population. There's no message that tells you when you reach this threshold, and the population of planets isn't listed in your overview thingie. So you constantly have to check this manually. I was playing in a small galaxy and this was already a pain.
Lack Of Fun
Stellaris, like EU, puts some fairly strong limits on expansion. Influence builds extremely slowly, administration takes dedicated buildings, you can't move pops as easily as in many other games, and so forth. Problem is, there isn't a whole lot to do other than exploring and very limited building. No intricate diplomacy and trade, no small skirmishes in neutral territory, no figuring out what unique buildings to construct. Mostly you're just waiting for things to happen.
The one interesting thing is exploration, with a bunch of different events and anomalies and sometimes multiple options. But even during the second game i had already seen most of the events i got. Apparently contact with other factions tends to bog down in stalemates too.
One time a completely new race spawned and right away they crushed my strongest fleet despite it having nearly twice their strength. All the time, resources and research that went into it was for nothing just so this new race could stand a chance i guess? I get that you want some semblance of balance but to do this on the easiest difficulty? I completely lost interest after that.
It's a fine game it's just that the genre is probably not for me (at least, if this is representative of the genre, it's not for me).
I run into a somewhat satisfying loop of surveying planets, constructing shit, doing diplomacy and combat whenever it's required, repeat ad nauseum with research upgrades to make sure i never feel like nodding off.
It is sufficiently alright where I am feeling a "mild" sense of enjoyment, but it just peaks there. I'm not super engaged, and I don't feel like making it to the endgame. This is probably a worthless review from someone who isn't into the game if I leave it at that, so I'm at least going to run down some positives.
Combat is interesting in terms of options, and there's always something to put your fleet on if you feel the slightest bit bored. There's tons of research paths and options and the different starter races feel differentiated. You will have to change your global strategy around developments that happen (when they do, VERY few and far between) and your gameplay loop will change over time.
Overall though eh, I've had the best I can get out of this …

Stellaris is pretty great. It is. I played as silly Humans, explored the interesting events, saw what the technology trees had to offer, dabbled with the ships and explored the galaxy.
After the exploration phase was done and my galaxy reached a political stalemate, I drifted away, never to return.
I saw the mysteries of the galaxy, tried the various systems and did not find it in me to push past the stable state.
INFORMATIONAL:
AI disclosure on Steam: We employ generative AI technologies during the creation of some assets. Typically this involves the ideation of content and visual reference material. These elements represent a minor component of the overall development. AI has been used to generate voices for an AI antagonist and a player advisor.
Currently, I have an obsession with board games. The biggest and baddest that require ample time and local friends adjoined in hopeless nerdom. I have neither.
I might as well play Stellaris instead of ache for Eclipse or Twilight Imperium. Except after 300+ hours, I can't bring myself to do so.
Having friends around the table at length is what I miss.
Having a blast with this game even though it was just the base game. 60 hrs in and I still haven't finished my first game with United Earth on a Medium galaxy (which is pretty large). Takes long because I'm watching and reading guides and learning every system in the game but it has all been very enjoyable. But should be wrapping up now soon.
Yesterday I bought ALL major expansions and DLCs for it at a discount so can't wait to start a new game with all that.
I listen to the Stellaris soundtrack often. It’s great. But I don’t play Stellaris! What are some game soundtracks you listen to for games you’ve never played?
Got the Mass Effect mods to work. Even added in some more Mass Effect races even though I had to use Stellaris aliens to represent them. Been playing for another 9 hours approximately, and am further progressed in the game than my first try, but so far I only met the Vorcha Clans (not the best neighbours by the way). I really don't know why that is, because I made it have one more empires than recommended for the map size. I'll just have to hope the Asari, Turians, Quarians, Salarians, Krogans, Hanar and Batarians are hiding somewhere in the galaxy and that it is not a bug. I really do love the game, but I wish I would meet the other aliens soon, because it feel a lot like just balancing things back and forth right now. Though actually building my fleet might not be such a bad idea... though I still don't really get the ship design part of the game (which was the thing I totally missed where a part of the game on my first try).
After a few (9) hours of trying this game out I have to say I really like it! I did really poorly, and I'm sure I missed some part that is really important to the game (it is a paradox game after all), but even though I was the worst independent galactic empire among all I encountered I did not die or get overwhelmed. It did live up to my expectation of being a space version of Civilization. Just what I wanted! Sadly I didn't get the Mass Effect mod to work, but I'll try again next time. Any recommendations on the abundance of Mass Effect mods to Stellaris is appreciated! :D
Has anyone bought Stellaris or is anyone considering it? I'm tempted to have a go at this game. I've always been intrigued by 4X space strategy games but I'm horrible at anything strategy-related. I never got deep into Master of Orion because the turn-based aspect made the game a bit too weird and slow. Stellaris is all real time. Also all the combat is automated I think, and that's awesome. It's generally the complicated combat sections which scare me away from these types of games. I mastered Dwarf Fortress, it's probably the only strategy game I've ever played so surely I have the mental capacity to play this one.
