Telltales in outer space

After playing Batman Telltales games, I must say this one was an improvement in the series. Positive things:

  • Great plot, you are really involved in the decisions made.
  • Great BSO, just placing the disc on the console and the party starts!
  • You feel like you are part of a film.
  • Super cool if you play it together with someone else …

  • It was very nice the way you discover things about the character's past.

Negative things:

  • You need to download the episodes and be patient. You need to be prepared for that. (I am getting used...)
  • Relatively short

Loved it even with its imperfections

I am a big fan of Telltale games in general but especially ones that take preexisting IP and make something interesting with it. This is one of those cases where it was able to play with characters I was familiar with and put together a really interesting game. I was fascinated by the story and the decisions felt like they mattered and made a difference. Throughout the game there were some big changes that occurred that sadly did not stick by putting everything back together for the happy ending. That is the problem when making a story with characters that have to live past it due to pre-existing material. Outside of not being bold enough the graphics and visuals felt clunky at points and the game, in general, had its fair amount of bugs. However, overall if you are interested in Marvel, Guardians, or Telltale games then this one is a no brainer.

Episode 1 (6.5/10)

I imagine this will be the general theme for the rest of the episodes and any Telltale game onward unless they change their formula, but I think I'm over them. I don't like the QTE battles, I hate just sitting there waiting and then having to press Q or E or SHIFT-Q, etc. It ruins a lot for me. I noticed in my Batman reviews that I was starting to get more bothered by them, then I never finished the series despite loving the actual story, and from that point until now I've just gotten over what Telltale does in this regard.

Which sucks because I enjoy the story here, the characters are charming like they should be, and I laughed a bunch of times. Making choices during conversations is still the most appealing aspect of the gameplay, but with so many RPGs and whatnot offering arguably deeper experiences, it may be time for them to step it up.

I'm still giving this a 6.5 for the story and characters, but I'm a huge Guardians fan so I'm already invested. I love the comics, love the movie, etc. Let me make this clear: it's the gameplay that drags this down, not everything else. From a narrative perspective this is at least an 8.
