There's also no fast travel system which isn't a problem in the city, but when it comes to travelling in and out of the countryside it can take a while with the winding roads... so I've developed my own car-rail system where I fly in-between the tracks at incredible speeds (patent pending).

One tip if you're thinking of playing on PC, make sure you install the GoG patch. It's easy to find online and without it the game just won't run unless you happen to be using a cpu with less than 4 cores.

The Saboteur is the first game I have played on the Playstation 3 and quite honestly, this was a great introduction. The game is set in 1940’s Nazi occupied Paris and you play the role of Sean Devlin, an Irish racer with a bit of a chip on his shoulder when it comes to the Nazis. After losing a race to a German driver, Sean decides to get some petty revenge, which results in a personal loss. This in turn puts Sean on a path of further revenge, whilst also helping the British and French resistance.

As far as the story goes, it is not The Saboteur’s strongest point, nor is it an exceptionally unique plot. That being said, it would appear that the developers were aware of this and embraced it. Some of the conversations Sean has with the other characters are actually quite funny, which in my opinion, makes the experience even better. Speaking of the characters, they are all pretty much your typical World War stereotypes- martyr like resistance leader, female British agent with a posh accent and young woman instantly attracted to the rebel. But like with the story, the developers embrace these stereotypes and just go with it. I think if you want a game that revolutionises the World War II setting, then you will be sorely disappointed but if you want a story with a few twists and turns and a lot of action, then this game will definitely suit you.

As far as looks go, The Saboteur is definitely a game of its generation. It certainly doesn’t push the PS3 to its limits. However, its use of colour definitely makes it stand out. In the Nazi occupied areas of Paris, everything is in a mixture of black, white and grey with just a hint of colour; whilst in the ‘inspired’ areas the game is in full colour. I honestly like this use of colour and adds a bit of a visual to your progress as you complete the free play activities and side quests.

The Saboteur is an open world game, which means it has its fair share of activities. Most of these activities involve you blowing some structure up or taking on some Nazis. There are plenty of these activities, enough to the point that you will feel like the developers are padding out the game time, in order to compensate for the short story. Still, the side activities are quite fun and I never found myself bored of them. In particular, I enjoyed trying to work out how to reach the sightseeing locations, which almost made the game feel like it was a puzzle platformer. The only activity that I did not enjoy as much was the racing, as the controls for the cars were appalling. I often lost the race due to my car spinning out of control. Fortunately, there aren’t that many races and only two of them are mandatory for the story.

I did come across some bugs and glitches, some of which worked in my favour, such as some of the tanks dropping on the heads of the soldiers that guarded them. However there were also a couple of occasions where the game would freeze and require me to restart my console. These issues, although sometimes annoying, did not ruin my experience with the game.

Overall, I feel like The Saboteur is a hidden gem that was initially forgotten due to the other games that were released at the time. It may not reinvent the action open world genre but it does enough to feel like a unique and individual experience. I would especially recommend The Saboteur to fans of the Assassin’s Creed series, especially if you wanted to know what an Assassin’s Creed game set in World War II would be like. If you own a PS3, Xbox 360 or play on PC I recommend you try out The Saboteur.

Stealth and shooting aren't really that great, especially when compared to proper stealth-action games, but they work well as part of the package.

Aside from the main story missions, there are hundreds of "freeplay" spots on the map: they're are mostly objects that need to be destroyed or Nazi soldiers that need to be killed, but their amount is quite staggering. A few major spots per city district would have been way more manageable.

I liked the story and the characters. Some linear setpieces in the missions were not up to par with more linear games like, say, Uncharted but for an open-world game it was quite good.

Stealth in an open-world city has been done in Assassin's Creed but here the setting is WW2 which is quite cool. A blend between AC and GTA: you are punished for killing pedestrians and stealth is prioritized, but at the same time you have cars and guns at your disposal. Quite good, unique and hasn't really been done since.

There's so much fun to be had blowing out all the Nazi installations, being able to disguise, exploring around in occupied France and causing mayhem. The story is not great its just a good laugh. It was a new bloody fun experience game.

Is it a good, fun game? Oh yeah..

It was such a pleasure going through this game. For some reason, I did not have great expectations, but after the first few hours I literally fell in love with it. Artistically it is outstanding, wandering in Paris is extremely entertaining, the music choices are fantastic and the main character is charismatic. Simply put, a game hard to forget.

Mediocre GTA clone.

I usually enjoy the 1940s aesthetic in games. Here though it was just a thin veneer over a mediocre GTA clone. There were no ideas or mechanics that really set this game apart (there was really nothing new here at all, even by the standards of 2009). The game wasn't bad, it just wasn't good either. Maybe if you want a GTA style game where things are a little less morally ambiguous, this title might work for you. Just don't expect anything too engaging. I've never been more bored trying to outrun Nazis in motorbikes at high speeds as I was here.

I don't know what to think of this yet. The writing is pretty mediocre and it seems like standard open-world gameplay. Punching Nazis in the face is always a lot of fun and the use of black-and-white is inspired. I really hope it grows on me because it is a fantastic concept.

Yeah, after playing this game for a long length of time I started to pick up Sean's Irish accent, it's just infectious. You are tasked with going around WWII France and basically breaking all of the Nazis' toys. The gameplay is a typical sandbox, liberate all of the districts, but they took an artistic twist with that tried method. All of the Nazi controlled areas are black & white, the drab colors of oppression, and the free zones have their regular color restored to them. Climbing around, bringing back the color, while listening to Sean's fun accent makes this game one that's enjoyable whenever I come back to it. The racing missions were my least favorite, but I was never good at racing.

This was the last game from Pandemic studios before they shut-down, and as one of my favorite studios of the time, they went out with a good note. Maybe not Earth-changing, but a solidly built game.
