ON A STEEL HORSE I RIDE (the same dirt roads over and over)

This game is a masterclass act on how NOT TO ALLOCATE YOUR FUNDS to making the people look pretty in cutscenes, because despite it being the most generic take on the zombie genre (with a 1% son of anarchy inspired main character who's nice to be around at least), it's main flaw is that it makes you traverse the same …

This game is a masterclass act on how NOT TO ALLOCATE YOUR FUNDS to making the people look pretty in cutscenes, because despite it being the most generic take on the zombie genre (with a 1% son of anarchy inspired main character who's nice to be around at least), it's main flaw is that it makes you traverse the same locations on a bike countless times before anything new happens.

You will be highly impressed by what this game has to offer in the first hours and be like "Wow this game could potentially be even better than The Last of Us!", because the core aspects of the game which is being an open world survival game, kinda work, but the pacing is so bad that 90% of the game is just going back and forth from the 2 camps to do one of 4 repeatable missions.

I'm impressed they even wanted to tell a story with this game because had you cut all of that (and nothing of value would be lost) you'd probably have more time to make the world bigger and not make you go through a slowly repetitive series of dirt roads you've passed by numerous time, all this game has to offer is revealed to you very quickly, after that, it's just SLOWLY paced out until you can unlock better features.

This game is a mish mash of ideas that were popular during this time and they wanted to make something safe and easily digestible, and it is, nothing is too offensive about the game but nothing is too interesting to keep you hooked in the game loop either, throughout the game's main gimmick of being a biker on a motorcycle, I kept praying that there was a button I could call my bike back to me like a horse, but no, it's always the same old: leave the bike, do a lil stealth, if you fail the stealth and attract a horde (and you are early in the game so you don't have many offensive options) then you just have to run back to your bike, ride away until you don't aggro the horde anymore, and then go back to doing the meandering Far Cry-like missions.

This game had potential, it has a lot of effort in it (kind of a given considering it was funded by Sony), but it was just not properly designed with pacing in mind, unless you are really starving for something that is just a mindless completionist type of game where you get to simulate a biker doing odd jobs in the apocalypse, once you realize this is all the game has to offer a few hours in, this game might TIRE you out.

And I know there are games doing exactly what this game is doing but better, The Evil Within 2 is also repetitious and has a similar game design (aka: What if we made Survival Horror Third Person Shooter with Stealth Mechanics but Open-world!) but it has SO MUCH more to offer than this does and I actually felt the need to beat that game because it was conceptually more interesting than what feels like a forgotten canceled zombie show that went nowhere.

Better than expected

And that was key I think, once you except this particular open world for what it is, it’s actually quite remarkable. The game had some heart in its story and the mechanics complement the game nicely. I had a good time with this one.

Finished this the other night. And yet I couldn't put it down! I'm not usually a trophy hunter (prefer achievements and even then rarely go for them these days) yet I have found myself going for the Platinum. I've got about 3-4 to go to round it out.

The voice acting for Deacon St. John is... odd. It comes in three flavors.

  1. Normal-ass dude.
  2. Porn actor ("Mmmm, yeah... I'm climbin' this ladder. You like that, ladder?")
  3. Completely wasted-drunk and screaming, trying desperately not to puke all over the place.

Really enjoyed playing this one. Not as bad as I was led to believe, however there have definitely been moments of frustration. I'm nearing the end (I believe) so I'm ready to put this one to bed and beginning a new game or going back to something else on my list.

I’ve been playing this game and I’m only a few hours into my 100% completion run as well as my first ever run through this really great open world post apocalyptic zombie title and I think this game so far from my experience got far too many negative reviews especially at launch from major game critique sites such as, IGN and GameSpot among others and I feel like they’ve been far too harsh on this.

Yes, Zombies have been populating pop culture ever since October 2010 when AMC’s The Walking Dead consumed the airwaves like zombies consume human flesh and I totally agree that the post apocalyptic zombie genre has been done to death in the most literal sense of the word when it comes to the zombie genre however, I feel like the game has been unfairly criticized so far seeing as my experience with it so far within the confines of the genre of game it’s in, I’ve had an extremely great time going up against The Freakers which are the classic super fast zombie type in line with Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake which came out in 2004.

The game world looks really nice, and it’s mildly enjoyable to ride around through all of its rainy Pacific Northwest greenery on the bike. Besides that, the game’s initial round of missions are too much “been there done that” for anyone who’s been playing a lot of AAA games for the last couple generations and has tired of semi-open-world games’ mission design, stealth, crafting, etc. Not too hyped to get back into it, since there doesn’t seem to be much fun or interest for a player like me here.

Feeling of isolation and real danger every time I had to move away from my bike (savegame disabled unless close to bike) and having to fill up on gas was always something I had to consider carefully. (at camps - it's too expensive, on the road - it's a long drive and dangerous, at bases - had to remember where the gas was and backtrack on foot) I highly recommend this game, to get past the flaws and repetitiveness I recommend you just safely ignore the side missions after you've reached higher levels.

Story and characters that actually grows on you and makes you care. I was left wanting a follow-up.

Fun enough but not open world

I am enjoying this game despite having played tons of oppressive, post-apocalypse zombie games in the past. It tries to be a bit like Red Dead 2 combined with The Walking Dead. The game has a base camp where you pick up missions; you head out on your trusty steed (motorcycle) to the mission location, which invariably involves a bunch of shooting and looting. All very standard stuff, but not nearly the level of polish of RDR2 or other games.

The world is sufficiently dangerous that you need to be cautious and exercise stealth more often than not. The crossbow and motorcycle let you fulfill your Normal Reedus badass fantasy. The Hordes are terrifying, and yet fun. I managed to bait a few into enemy camps to maul my foes and complete my mission for me.

The big flaw is that there is just not much in this "open" world. There is no point to exploring except for a few meaningless collectibles. Weapon upgrades must be purchased at camp, which are then locked behind Trust points you earn over the course of the game. Every location is an abandoned whatever, often filled with baddies to murder. There are no random friendly encampments, no echoes of the people that lived in the locations you visit, no interesting takes on what the post apocalyptic world has become.

Every game has to be their own but I kinda wish they had gone for the BOTW scheme where weapons were not repairable, encouraging you to scrounge more and use them sparingly. The game introduces more dangerous creatures as you progress but they just appear throughout the world without any story reason. I would have preferred something like Assassin's Creed where you can encounter powerful enemies early on and must decide if you want to push your luck. I wish they had developed the main character as more of an outlaw that had to deal with hostility of the camps, as in RDR2 and its wanted system.

It's fine, but I just wish there was more to it. I can see more potential than what was built.

I had a good time. I actually found the characters interesting; other than a definite "SoA + TWD" vibe, I didn't find them as hackneyed as characters in this type of game tend to be. That being said, while I enjoyed the dialogue, and the plot in general, I was kind of underwhelmed by the finale. Some of the "big reveals" were a bit too obvious and not a surprise. And the "tutorial" missions (the first few missions where the game introduces you to the basic mechanics and various sandbox activities available) were, I thought, a little clumsy. I thought for the survival mechanic, it struck a good balance between feeling downright punishing, and feeling like there was plenty to go around. I constantly found myself worrying about, and sometimes actually, running out of ammo, that is until endgame when camp credits were plentiful from horde eliminations and no more big purchases to spend on other than ammo.
