Tears of the Kingdom is a great experience in a lot of ways, and certainly it improves on Breath of the Wild, but exploring most of the map wasn't all that compelling. The sky islands were cool I suppose.

Anyways, it's still a very good game, but ultimately it wasn't a great experience after having already beaten Breath of the Wild.

Not as good as I’d hoped, recycled world

I’m a huge Zelda fan but sadly I couldn’t enjoy this game as much as Breath of the Wild. As someone who takes immense pleasure in exploring and immersing myself in new worlds, the fact that they reused the world from BoTW was disappointing. Sure, there’s the sky and the underground, but they’re not as richly developed as the main floor. At first I enjoyed the new fuse abilities and had a lot of fun with the puzzles, but eventually I’ve just lost interest in the story and the world in general. I actually enjoyed the shrines a lot in both games, I love the puzzle aspect, but after hundreds of shrines I’m ready for a new puzzle mechanic. I’m surprised by the comments that the story is better than BOTW, it didn’t really captivate me at all. I guess this is just not for me….I hope they come out with a new and completely unique Zelda game like how they did with Majoras Mask back in the day.

Breath of Tears of the Wild Kingdom

Nintendo did it again. Sort of.

To save you some time, if you liked Breath of the Wild, you'll like Tears of the Kingdom as well. If you didn't, nothing will change your mind.

Nintendo did it again. Sort of.

To save you some time, if you liked Breath of the Wild, you'll like Tears of the Kingdom as well. If you didn't, nothing will change your mind.

It's all here. Engaging exploration, cute visuals, lots of surprises, crazy breakable weapons, shrines, great OST, koroks, creepy enemies, cool towers, funny writing, a nice story and endless gameplay possibilities.

Only now you have some pretty new and impressive things to keep things fresh. Ascend is probably one of my favorite mechanics ever in a game, ultrahand is godsend, endlessly attaching things to your items never gets old and rewinding is pretty useful and creative. I'm not a "puzzle" guy and I thought these new things weren't going to stick the landing with me, but I was definitely wrong. It all works very well.

There are also two new maps. The sky islands and the depths. I absolutely loved everything in the sky, especially how well they were implemented to the story. It's astonishing. The depths were pretty fun and ominous at first, but became annoying and repetitive after a while.

TOTK is definitely remarkable, with plenty of things to catch you off guard, from the story to gameplay. The ending nearly brought me to tears, with some of the best "cinematic" moments and battles I've experienced in this franchise. It is, without a doubt, a good sequel to BOTW. A good one, with few flaws to point at.

Yet, one major feeling slowly crawled inside me on my 180h playthrough.

The sense of novelty kinda vanishes. Don't get me wrong, a game isn't supposed to throw new and shocking things at you at all times! But that overwhelming feeling I had when I played BOTW faded after 80h in. I felt like I was pretty much done with it after experiencing nearly everything new that the game had to offer. But there were MANY other things to do and explore. Felt like I was playing BOTW again and, although I LOVE that game, its replay factor might be its weakest aspect. The story is very shallow as well. Not that the first one was amazing, but it worked. Now it just...doesn't. It hardly even mentions the previous one.

That's really the only thing I have to complain about it. Or the biggest thing, in a way. A few problems from the previous entry are still here (like how they handle the "memories" and the infinite shrine hunting) or how the new "friend abilities" don't hold a candle to the likes of Revali's Gale or Mipha's Grace.

Tears of the Kingdom is a great game and there's A LOT to talk about it. But, for now, I'll just repeat what I said before: if you're like me, and you loved BOTW, pick this one up now. If you didn't, it will not change your mind.

Tolkuttoman laaja seikkailu

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kindom (eli sormiasäästävämmin TotK) on jatko-osa kenties kaikkien aikojen arvostetuimmalle pelille, Breath of the Wildille (aka BotW). Täytettävät saappaat ovat siis järkyttävän isot, mutta TotK täyttää nämä... ehkä vähän liiankin hyvin.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kindom (eli sormiasäästävämmin TotK) on jatko-osa kenties kaikkien aikojen arvostetuimmalle pelille, Breath of the Wildille (aka BotW).

Esimerkiksi Depths on hyvin toisteista maastoa kauttaaltaan. Muutenkin, montaa pelissä olevaa aktiviteettiä (Korokkien roudaus, mainoskylttien pystytys, shrine-puzzlet) tulee pelin aikana tehtyä niin paljon, että niihin alkaa loppumatkalla kyllästyä. Onneksi kyseessä on paljolti vapaaehtoinen näpräys.

Helpompi on paeta.

On hieno nähdä Switchin tuuttaavan tämän laajuusluokan avointa maailmaa vaatimattomilla tehoillaan. Suorituskyvyssä tosin on parannettavaa: framedroppeja tulee pelissä vähän väliä.

  1. As a person in an interracial marriage, I would not mind at all if the plot is about Zonai/Hylian relationship. Also seems to be some religious connotations considering the Zonai are the gods that the Hylians used to worship which as a former pastor, I appreciate.
  2. Rauru! Is that just a name or is this another sacred role that we're seeing lived out over and over? Either way, from the moment Ganondorf says Rauru, I've been leaning forward with this story.

I’ll wait and see but this was not news I’d hoped for.

I ended up buying the TOTK Switch OLED on impulse. I regret nothing. I justified it by telling myself I'm gonna try to experiment with jailbreaking my OG release Switch so... best to have a backup right?

I started a new job (which is why my Donkey Kong Diaries are on a hiatus), and although I'm a manager, my days off have kinda been decided by the director board. However, this next week I regain control of my days off. I could take Friday off to play TotK all day. However, my kid is graduating from preschool on Wednesday. In a moment of paternal love, I decided to take Wednesday off instead of Friday. I'm just gunna play TotK on Friday anyway and just do a bad job at work.
