Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 brings back the beloved characters from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl with a few additiions and new levels. The format of the game is familiar drawing heavily from the mechanics of the well-known Super Smash Bros. series, this game offers an easy-to-learn experience that appeals to both kids and nostalgic adults alike. As a parent, I found myself diving into this game primarily for my child, but I was surprised by the enjoyment it brought.

Gameplay Mechanics: The overall gameplay experience is straightforward and accessible, making it easy for newcomers to jump in. The pacing feels dynamic, with fast-paced matches that keep you engaged.

  • Combat System: The combat mechanics are reminiscent of Smash Bros., with satisfying attacks and moves that feel familiar. While some character moves are enjoyable, they can feel a bit repetitive, especially if you’re used to the depth of other platform fighters.
  • Character Roster: The character roster is solid, featuring many well-known Nickelodeon characters that kids will recognize. Playing as characters I grew up watching was a highlight for me, and it’s one of the game’s stronger features.
  • Improvements Over the First Game: While there are updated graphics and new levels, I didn’t notice any significant changes in mechanics compared to the first Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. It feels like an evolution rather than a complete overhaul.

Graphics and Art Style: The graphics in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 are decent and successfully capture the essence of the characters.

  • Visual Appeal: The visuals meet the standards expected for a game of this type, though they don’t push any boundaries. It’s important to note that this is not a 3D game, so the art style aligns with that expectation.

Sound and Music: The soundtrack didn’t particularly stand out to me, but it seemed to fit the levels well.

  • Character Voices: The character voice lines are a nice touch, with many voices closely matching those from the TV shows, which adds to the overall charm of the game.

Challenge and Replayability: The game can be challenging, especially if you crank up the difficulty, but it remains accessible for casual players.

  • Replayability: Personally, I found the game less replayable for myself, but it serves as a great option for kids who enjoy Nickelodeon characters. The variety of characters and modes can keep younger players engaged.

Platform Experience: I played Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 on the Xbox Series X, and the controls felt responsive and well-suited for the platform.

Personal Take: My favorite aspect of playing Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 was simply being able to play as the characters I grew up with. While I initially downloaded the game for my child, I found enjoyment in the nostalgia it provided.

  • Areas for Improvement: There’s not much I found lacking; the game follows the successful formula of Smash Bros., which works well.
  • Recommendation: I would recommend this game to anyone with kids or to those who want to experience a Nickelodeon-themed version of Smash Bros. It’s a fun, lighthearted game that can provide hours of entertainment for younger audiences.

The 'budget' game aspects really show through on the non-combat stages in campaign mode. The way platforms and obstacles move back and forth screams internet browser flash game in my mind. The occasional bugs and times the game would freeze on loading or after being idle too long reinforces this.

The 'budget' game aspects really show through on the non-combat stages in campaign mode. The way platforms and obstacles move back and forth screams internet browser flash game in my mind. The occasional bugs and times the game would freeze on loading or after being idle too long reinforces this.

The core gameplay is solid however, and I'm really enjoying the creativity of these character movesets so far. It's a shame they couldn't have just given the developers another year or two to really make something amazing. All in all, it's still a giant leap forward from what I've seen of the first game.
